cable + internet

hi everyone,

this is my first post but i've been living in the neighborhood for over a year.

i have cablevision for cable + internet, and i just noted a giant spike in the amount of my monthly bill. i'm only paying for internet service, DVR + the "family cable" package, and it's around $111.

is that an absurd price? or is that standard? does anyone have any recommendations for something cheaper (besides getting rid of DVR or cable, which i don't want to do!) i feel like cablevision's the only option we have in this neighborhood... am i wrong?

thanks,
brette

Ask to speak to the "retention" department. Tell them to come pick up their crappy cable box b/c you're switching to direct-tv. They'll probably offer you the same price as new customers. If you're a real hard ass about it, you might be able to get more concessions (although until Fios shows up, your bargaining power is weaker).
  • Yeah, I have the same thing you have, minus the DVR (I have TiVo) and it went up to over $100. I'm going to take it down to basic cable. The shows I watch are all on the internet anyway, so why give them $50 bucks a month for it?

I agree with arches, ask to speak to the "retention" department if you want to retain the same service you already have.
  • I have their internet and family cable package, currently paying 94.04; however, I got a letter from them saying the promotion would be up soon and they would raise my bill by 11 which makes no sense because I'm not under any promotion.

I agree with above posters. Giving them a call would be a good idea. I think I'll try the retention department myself.
  • be careful that when your "promotion" ends they also don't tack on another $10/mo worth of "IO Cable Channels." That's how my bill got into the astronomical range, until I pitched a fit and they agreed to remove it.

Back when I had cablevision, I got them to drop my rate for another year by threatening to go to directtv. They even threw in a dvr.

The problem is that these promotions always come to an end. Read the fine print!
