Conventional wisdom is that whites are sometimes NOT targeted because it is thought that the police will care more (and work harder toward solving) when a white person is the victim of a crime rather than a black.

How true it may be (and how it plays out in reality) is really beyond me, but it's just very basic conventional wisdom growing up in NYC. I'd be glad to be proven wrong if there's some sort of statistics proving otherwise.
