Are bars and Restaurant affecting quality of life?
Community Board should really discuss the impact that many of our favorite Bars and restaurants are having on the quality of life of many people that live on Vandy and its proximity, specially, noise, smoke, public display drunkenness(which i am guilty of ), coke dealing and crime--
What does anyone else think? Any comments from the tenants who live above and across every single establishment on Vady?

Living on Underhill I cannot say the noise and drunks affect me much so I cannot comment on that
But you do make a good point - you should bring that up at the next community board meeting. It would be nice to have these business owners show up at a meeting once a month to hear the complaints of their neighbors. I really enjoy having the new bars there but I think it is really up to the business owner to keep their patrons and noise in check.
The only place a have a complaint about is Barette. I walk by on my way to work each morning and outside is always filthy and littered with butts - so Please Barette put some ashtrays outside or give it a quick sweep before you close up at night. -
I walked up Vanderbilt at around 10:30pm on Friday night and it was completely and totally dead.
Was on the way to Weather Up, but the place was about 120 degrees so we walked in and walked out. Guess the air conditioner was broken. Too bad, I like that place.
Me and my friend commented how Vanderbilt was a total ghost town on a nice summer weekend night in August. I saw maybe 5 people on the street total. -

Based on my experience on Saturday night, I completely disagree:

belzjm your post raises an interesting point.

I know that the "affecting" in the title to this thread means "negatively affecting".
But allow me to reverse it.
I just moved here from Bushwick. Where I lived there were no (ZERO) neighborhood bars, one decent restaurant (Life Cafe) and not much else in terms of retail.
Having those kinds of establishments a lengthy train/cab ride away didn't make it inconvenient to enjoy them, many times it was outright prohibitive. I just didn't get a chance to enjoy those kinds of places very often for a couple years of my life.
Although I liked my old apartment, I moved specifically so that I could be somewhere with decent restaurants and pubs/bars, etc. within walking distance.
I realize there can be negative aspects to those places also (obviously), but think about life without them. With a flagging economy, it could happen in so-called "gentrifying" neighborhoods that aren't completely there yet. -
quality of life crimes are the new traffic patterns on vandy & so many other brooklyn streets. that shit is pathetic 1 lane.what happens to the bike lanes in the winter???? bars & drug dealers thats EVERY WHERE in the usa/world..

i've lived above one of the bars on vanderbit, can honestly say i haven't had any sort of problems. once the honky tonk place on bergen opens up and starts hosting live music.... we'll see. my quality of life is extremely high and the food/drink establishments have only added to it.

Vandy loud on a Saturday night? It's a F*cking Morgue! You can hear crickets chirping it's so quite.

yeah, this doesn't sound like typical sneakyspeak...

i find the thought of barring bars barbarous

Yes, they have affected the quality of life, namely by making it better. It's great to be able to dine and drink within walking distance of one's home. I agree that Vanderbilt is fairly quiet at night and not at all like Fifth Avenue (which I also love).

I agree wtih a lot of other folks on the board. The addition of bars and restaurants in the neighborhood has improved my quality of life. Nice to grab a quick beer close to home and see friends and neighbors. Does anyone information on when the new country western bar is going to open across from Barrette on Vanderbilt?
