Not to be a party pooper, but Jouvert is probably one of the most dangerous events in the City. Believe it or not, the Jouvert celebration attracts far less people than the actual parade, yet it is 10 times more violent.

There can be a lot of violence "associated" with j'ouvert, but it's generally not along the main route by Flatbush, Empire, etc. where there are hundreds of cops. I think most of the violence happens on side streets, at house parties, etc.
Don't let KWAC scare you off. -
more details on the violence please...just drunkards shooting guns off, or muggings, beatings, etc?

No it's not. Stop spreading lies and propaganda rhetoric. -
JAH, you need to lighten up and also look up the definition of "propaganda". You're implying that King is part some conspiracy against Jouvert which is totally ridiculous.

. this is definitely the largest parade and with such crowds gathering and factor in alcohol, sometimes things happen. for the most part it is a parade with great food, great music, good times, great costumes, lots of politicians making appearances and heavy police presence.

That's the parade. This thread was about J'ouvert (the night before the parade). -

You post 5 articles over the past 5 years, most of which were about the parade itself, not J'ouvert, as if that proves your point? There is violence at the parade (mostly off route) and at J'ouvert (also mostly off route). The parade has over 2 million people, larger than most cities in the U.S. With that many people, there are going to be incidents, as there would in any cohort of 2 million people. You're looking at the numerator and ignoring the denominator. It's total fear-mongering and has nothing to do with the reality of about 99.9999% of people's experience with the parade.

Also if shit does happen, 9 times out of 10 it is PERSONAL. Somebody owes $, somebody fucked someones woman, etc. Nothing will happen to a random stranger unless they are incredibly disrespectful or something. -
Also it's J'OUVERT for fucks sake.

Yeah, I was thinking of correcting the thread title, but thought I would leave that to the OP. -
J'ourvet is the day of the year when you honor your pet's health care provider.

well bloody said.
all things considered (summer heat, literally millions of people, crazy crowd conditions), a small handful of violent events in so many years is pretty impressive. I've been to bars with more fights in a single night (though none of them have ended in shooting/stabbing heh). -
Okay, so violence aside, where exactly is the parade route? The WIADCA website isn't 100 percent clear (to me anyway), but I think that it's Eastern Pkway from Utica to GAP. Am I correct?
And, more importantly: the food. Are there vendors all along the route, or one central place? -

Sorry, I didnt have enough time to google all the Jouvert violence articles. I agree that with an event that large that something is bound to happen. However Jouvert is extremely violent. Last year the 67 precinct made 16 gun arrests that evening. But all those attending the even,t please feel free to report back, I'd like to know how it goes. -

that's the route for the main parade on monday during the day. there will be food everywhere.
And, more importantly: the food. Are there vendors all along the route, or one central place?
j'ouvert is the night before. theoretically it starts at 2 or so in the morning, but last year it started at more like 4-4:30. the route is from GAP up flatbush to empire, then in to i think nostrand or so. last year i remember one very busy food vendor at GAP, selling doubles. yumyumyum!
the parades are quite different. both are very fun. -
well if you wanna go ... its always on church ave.. from like nostrand all the way down to utica.. but like the other ppl said its type dangerous...

1 Dead, 5 Hurt In Labor Day Pre-Party's

NY Post
A 24-year-old Brooklyn man was killed and five other people wounded in separate incidents during pre-dawn celebrations leading up to today's West Indian Day parade, law enforcement sources said.
Winfield Gaston, was fatally shot in the head around 10:20 p.m. as revelers took to the streets in Brooklyn for the pre-festival festivities known as J'ouvert.
"The West Indian Parade is [today], but they party the night before," said a 33-year-old teacher who heard the fatal shots fired in front of his apartment building on Winthrop Street near Flatbush Avenue in Flatbush.
"It's crowded outside, everybody's outside. The whole block is blocked off. There were about a million cops out there," he said.
"It sounded like a . . . verbal fight before the actual gunfire. There were several shots, too many to count. I was looking out the window afterwards and there was a kid, an associate of the guy who was shot, who was crying in the street." The sources said Gaston wore the colors and insignia of the Crips gang and had been shot twice in the past.
In addition, police said five Brooklyn party-goers were victims of gunplay.
* A woman was shot in the leg at the intersection of Empire Blvd and Nostrand Avenue.
* At Church and E. 46th Street, someone sprayed gunfire into a crowd, injuring three in their legs.
* A man was shot and wounded not far away, the sources said without disclosing the exact location.
This stuff happens all the time at the St Patricks Day Parade? -
so don't go then. nobody wants to see you there anyway.

I've been going to the parade for many years but only started going to J'ouvert 2 years ago. I basically stick to the Flatbush end of it and haven't had any problems. -
Wait can someone please tell me what J'OUVERT is and when the West Indian parade it -- and where the straight pride parade is so I can AVOID it
Thanks! -

First of all, this is not a competition of who has the most violent parade in the City. I simply replied to a question about the Jouvert celebration. After claims that the event is relatively safe, I butressed my argument with a few fairly recent articles involving recent incidents in the past few years. Your claim that the St Patricks Day Parade is far more violent than the West Indian Day Parade is ridiculous, and posting an article from 1998 of a person being stabbed and a random fist fight, does not support your claim. I hope there is no violence at Jouvert nor at the Parade, but in my experience, every Parade and Jouvert has been marred by either tradgedy and or violence.
