Where to eat... — Brooklynian

Where to eat...

A friend of mine from Jersey who I don't see often is going to an event at Brooklyn Public Library on Saturday. So I figured we best use that chance to grab a bite to eat and hang out for a bit beforehand, but I know nothing really of what's good to check out around there. I know Vanderbilt has a selection of places but I've never been to any. Any and all suggestions are welcome, esp those on the cheaper side

Comments

  • chavella's (classon and prospect)
    amorina (vandy and prospect)

    are both good and cheap.
  • Cheryl's on Underhill. Reasonable and very pretty backyard.
  • El Gran Castillo on Flatbush
  • cheryl's also has the advantage of being right across the street from the library. good but not especially cheap. do a search on this board for reviews.

chavella's (mexican), amorina (pizza) and gran castillo (dominican) are somewhat cheaper and all quite pleasant. tom's, a great '30s diner at washington and sterling, serves breakfast all day but is pretty packed on saturdays. islands, washington around st. john's, is very good caribbean but service is island-paced.
  • Maybe a little far afield but Teddy's on Washingon has the best quality of food to price raito I've experienced (almost anywhere in NYC for that matter). It's Greek cuisine, in a really cute setting.

For example, the Gyro is excellent, so large that it is tough to finish in one sitting and they just raised the price from $5.25 to a whopping $6.
  • oh yeah, great idea. forgot about teddy's. and if the weather's nice, they have a nice garden. you can bring your own wine too.
  • Thank you all for the awesome suggestions! I looked into each of em, and first I got really hungry (primo thing at midnight...). I think the winner is going to be Tom's Diner! It's a good middle distance from the GAP subway station where my friend will be coming from and the 48 bus that I'll be riding down. Though now that I think of it I'll probably have to meet her at the subway anyway since she's never even been to that part of Brooklyn... Oh well! Plus we're both Jersey born and raised if there's one thing we take seriously, it's diners.

That said, now I have a list of restaurants to check out in the PH area. Thanks again all!
  • and just so you know, tom's closes in the afternoon, 4 i think, and so isn't open for dinner.
  • Crap, we were goin' to go around 5:45-6ish. Thanks for the heads up on that one.
  • FYI, if you choose any of these restaurants, it will be easier for your friend to take the train one stop further to Eastern Pkwy/Brooklyn Museum and meet up there. The GAP station is on the far side of the roundabout from the library and is a bit of a pain, especially if she or you don't know where you're going.
  • Teddys. Seriously.
  • Plan abandoned. She ran into a family emergency and is stayin in Jersey. Thanks everyone for the awesome advice and inspiring my tastebuds to hop the bus to PH in the very near future for some good eats!
