Witnessed a mugging tonight
So I just witnessed a mugging and I am all shook up and have to vent. Actually, I'm pissed off. First, I'm pissed because I didn't do more. Second, I'm pissed because this happened right in front of where I live. And finally, I'm pissed because it is so fucking stereoTYPICAL that it feeds the worst thoughts in all of us.
I leave my front door (I dont want to be too specific, but I'm very close to Flatbush) and start walking my dog down the block. I notice 2 YBMs running down the opposite side of the street. My first impression was "what the fuck are they up to?" then I think "whatever, just goofing off". About 5 seconds later, I hear a yell from behind me. I turn, and there are the 2 guys standing over someone who's laying on the sidewalk.
So, I start walking toward them and yell something like "What are you doing?". One of them runs off and the other, older guy (mid 20s?), Starts sauntering towards me yelling "Ya want some too?" When he gets closer I notice he doesn't have a weapon. He shrugs and crosses the street. I think they got in a car and sped off, but I'm not sure because I went to go check on the guy laying in the pool of blood.
When I get to the victim, he's bleeding from his nose and his lip. He's an average sized white male in his early 30s. He's dazed and bloody, but seems ok, considering. They took his wallet with 42 bucks in it. He still had his cell phone on him. He calls a friend, I call 911. My wife comes out with papertowels, ice and a cup of water. The cops come en mass.. like 4 cars and 10 guys plus an abmulance and ask questions. Of course, what can we say? 2 YBMs, one in a red hoodie jumped him and got away. So fucking typical it's sad.
I wish I had gotten a look to see where they went, license number etc.
I wish I had the courage to stomp the macho one that came up to me.
I wish my dog was a pitbull, not a mini schnauzer
I wish the 3-4 people standing on the sidewalk on the other side of the victim had stepped in too.. maybe we could have held the guys.
I wish the cops came sooner so they had a chance of catching someone
I wish the perps weren't black and the victim wasn't white
I wish this had never happened

Good night.

Hey Joseph,
Please re-read my post again. I'm angry, in part, because these idiots reinforced all the old stereotypes of black-on-white crime. When I first saw them running down the street I was suspicious. Then I felt bad for thinking that way about 2 young black men. THEN they mugged a guy and I felt even worse. If we want to rid the world of stereotypes against young black males, it would help if we didn't see some of them mugging a guy in front of our homes.
But whatever, race is the least important problem with what happened last night. -

I called 911. They took a report. I think they have to if you call 911.

Not only did it happen in front of people, it happened on a pretty safe block. I know that there have been some incidents near Underhill, but this was right near Flatbush, just around the corner from Franny's for crying out loud. -
ok a few things NO block is "SAFE" that needs to get outta peoples heads. if you want a safe block move into the pentagon or gracie mansion. no block in NYC is safe. TRUE STORY
2nd you gotta becareful getting involved in affairs such as robberies and things like that your life isnt worth it. especially if they arent killing the dude you saw him on the ground and they are running away just leave it at that call the cops thats all you should be thinking of doing.
and your "i wish" list man.. you live in NYC maybe your living on the wrong side of the world with a wish list like that..
now im not trying to sound like a dick or anything of the sort but thats just me.. -
Actually, supreme, there ARE safer neighborhoods (not just blocks) in Brooklyn where sure, things can and do happen, but NOT on a routine basis. madman, glad you filed a report and helped this poor guy - I hope these hoodlums are taken off the streets soon!

whats considered a "safer" neighborhood ? -
I really have no problem with what you did, atleast you did something. Some people actually will witness a Crime and turn the other way, so you get credit for helping. I find your statement wishing the Perps weren't Black and the victim wasn't White to be utterly ridiculous. Why not wish that people didn't have to Rob one another? Would you have been happy if it were white kids Robbing and kicking the shit out of a black guy? This sounds to me like a classic example of "white guilt". I don't even know if you're white, but by your focusing on the Ethnicity of the Perpetrators and the Victim, you're missing the boat completely.

Check the precinct by precinct violent crime stats and figure it out. -
yeah but you always have to think about how MANY crimes go unreported. and you kinda sound like a asshole " check the crime stats and figure it out"
all im saying is im FROM brooklyn and know many different types of people. and i know how many ppl who commit crime think. if you think your hood is safe ppl who rob and steal know that and they venture into YOUR safe area to rob and steal. just like how shit happens in the suburbs ! -
supreme asks: whats considered a "safer" neighborhood ?
answer: where violent crime is a rarity.
In other words, you don't have to live near Gracie Mansion for goodness sakes. -

OK and im saying you being a "native ny'er" know that no such area exists in nyc. violent crime happens in every single neighborhood of nyc, granted i know the level of violent crime in east new york/ Brownsville and that of brooklyn heights/ park slope is different... but people making sly comments about it and people acting like it just doenst happen is just silly & funny to me

if this was old brooklyn, if someone who didn't belong to the area, they would of gotten a beat down. they would get chased etc... by all the locales.
people used to stick to their own hoods for muggings. -
supreme, anything can happen anywhere however, there ARE neighborhoods where it is very low, almost non-existent. I happen to live in one. You can think it's silly and funny, but it happens to be the truth. I'm very sorry if you're so tainted or have only seen one side of life. Be well.
-
ok i will ask you AGAIN.. what AREA do you live in? because prospect heights IS NOT one of those area?
-
supreme, there are many areas in Brooklyn that are considered safe from violent street crime: Windsor Terrace, Kensington, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge, Park Slope, Sheepshead Bay, Gravesend, Mill Basin, Georgetown, I think Williamsburg and Greenpoint(?) - I know there's more but I'm not sure of their names. Prospect Heights can go either way, I think. I was just responding to your comment about Gracie Mansion, and trying to say that we should not be complacent about violent crime - it is NOT something that we have to live with.

I'm not so sure about that. I don't feel guilty for my feelings. I wish things had been different, but that's not guilt. It was more of a feeling of dissapointment in human nature that comes from watching people live up to the worst expectations society has for them. -
Bensonhurst = the hood in nyc with the WORST reported act of racial violence EVER in nyc .. ahahahah
Georgetown = where the hell is this at. im from BROOKLYN and never heard of this.
Williamsburg and Greenpoint = 2 high crime area's matter fact last i recall those 2 area's high the highest rate of "muggings" street robberies in bklyn.
Prospect heights .. come on man.. your making me laugh again..
same with kensignton its 1 of those small hoods in bklyn where alot of shit goes on but you will never hear of it because of the way the LOCALS keep it. just like armchair said ..
brooklyn still has plenty of hoods that operate like that.. Bay Ridge, kensingtn, dyker heights & ESPECIALLY sheepshead bay/mill basin are like that .. take a good look @ who is on the streets in those areas ! -
as much as i love to argue and debate. bottom line is your NOT a cop, your NOT superman, if you see some shit goin down. just call the cops !
thats all .. have a good day ALL ! -
