Witnessed a mugging tonight

That comparison is absolutely ridiculous. Even if they were similar, I don't know why you'd be disturbed.
Be careful of the "outsiders invading our nabe and changing things" meme. It's disturbingly similair to when the majority-white (Italian, Jewish and German) population complained about blacks moving into Prospect Heights during the 1950s-1960s. It wasn't right then and it isn't right now.
Populations come and go. Change happens. It's happened before and it will happen again. But if you take it personally, if you build up a self-rightous claim to the status-quo, you only build resentment and anger among groups. That doesn't help anyone involved.
Gotta love the teary-eyed "Ellis Island" argument, despite the fact that no one who uses it seems to register just how ridiculous they sound, comparing themselves paying $3,000 a month for an apartment to impoverished Southern Blacks coming here hoping for work, or foreigners landing here from overseas trying to build a better life.
I've said it before and I've said it again, I've never heard of my father or grandfather or anyone else telling stories about people getting "priced out" of parts of Brooklyn, by individuals from out-of-state with seemingly endless supplies of money and no visible means of support like we see today. So, I just can't buy your "Change happens" argument. Sorry. :? -
I'm not saying gentrification is all a bed of roses. But it is as inevitable at the local level as any other societal change. The human history of trying to prevent the movement of people is a treasure trove of failure.
However, passing off a violent assault and mugging as a natural and expected consequence of our most recent socioeconomic shift is sickening and cowardly. It shields the aggressors from personal responsibility and attempts to place the blame on the victim of the assault. Boiling it down to "The [insert racial epitath] had it coming" was wrong in the 60s and it is wrong today, no matter what side of the change you are on. -
I highly doubt the muggers were trying to make some sort of political statement.
-
Exactly. That's why putting high-minded excuses to work for them pisses me off.
-
Violent Robberies have occured in Crown/Prospect Heights for ages, long before the gentrifiers had arrived. To even try to explain away such savage-like behavior is reprehensible.

Well then reprehend me baby.
Nobody is trying to make excuses for anyone. Where I was going, was that the victim/attacker pattern is as 'stereotypical' as it is today because of the drastic economic/demographic disparity. That's why there's such a stark color line between the muggers and the victims now.
You (may) know as well as I do, there was a time not so long ago in this city when it wasn't at all uncommon to get mugged by a white guy. -

When you're a Jet, you're a Jet all the way
From your first cigarette, to your last dying day...
Er, wait.
Forget it. -
...and the person sweeping your office floor, or serving you your lunch had a chance of being white as well.

This is predominantly _way_ more of a class thing than a race thing. In a black are, you will find blacks mugging blacks, or people of any color who appear to be worthy of mugging. In a white area, you'll find whites mugging whites, or once again, a person of any color that appears worthy of mugging. That's how it works. Ennis Cosby. He was a rich black guy that was robbed and killed by a poor white guy. Trust me, there are _plenty_ of places where a black guy can get mugged by a white guy, if that's what you are looking for. -

I know in 2008 Park Slope/Prospect Heights/Crown Heights, it's almost impossible to imagine anyone white having a set of balls aside from the cops, but that wasn't always the reality.whynot_31 wrote: ...and the person sweeping your office floor, or serving you your lunch had a chance of being white as well.
Exactly, you see what I'm getting at.. the increasing stratification in this city is really pretty disgusting if you ask me. -

Interesting insight to think that it takes balls to mug people. The majority of muggings reported around here seem to be three or more on one, and more often than not that one is someone who wasn't paying attention or such.
But hey, if you think it takes balls to hit someone from behind and run off with their stuff, then I guess you are entitled to your opinion. Ya tough cookie you!

And I've read countless accounts here and elsewhere of grown (white) men running away from groups of 12-14yr old GIRLS who were harassing/attempting to mug/beat them up.. so you see, everything is relative. -

And this is to say that you think grown (white) men should be beating up 12-14yr old girls, then? Especially if they are their relatives?
I'm just having _so_ much trouble understanding you.
And I don't mind going on the record as opposing your apparent position that grown (white) men should beat up 12-14yr old girls. Not only that, I will take it one step further, and state that grown (black) men should not beat up 12-14yr old girls either.
'Cause I'm all equal opportunity like that. -
Please don't feed the racist trolls. Didn't we just go through this nonsense with Jah?

I was _nothing_ but nice to him. FYI.
So there.
And you sir, or madam, are in violation of the rules. No name calling.
Besides, what sort of trolls should I be feeding then? And if you don't feed them, how do you _ever_ expect them to grow up and be productive denizens of the community? Hmm? What about that? -
You are never gonna change his mind. He hates white people and his mind is made up about that, which is why he can make all his sweeping generalizations (countless posts about men fearing 12-14 year old girls - who wants to bet "countless" means he saw one post about that once?)
People filled with hate are not going to change their minds no matter how polite and well reasoned your arguments. Let him stew in his own juices about the good old days of 20 years ago and the rest of us can deal with the current world outside our windows. -

Hmm. I guess I haven't been paying close enough attention. Countless posts about men fearing 12-14 year old girls? Thou dost protesteth too much, anyone?silverager wrote: People filled with hate are not going to change their minds
Hey, I'm not asking anyone to change their minds, just at LEAST their socks from time to time. I mean, we all have to walk these streets together, do we not? And I like to do my part to make it _just a little_ fresher. Ya know.silverager wrote: no matter how polite and well reasoned your arguments.
Oh NO YOU DIDN'T!!! You did NOT just accuse me of being polite and well reasoned, did you?
I believe I am truly offended. How rude!silverager wrote: Let him stew in his own juices about the good old days of 20 years ago and the rest of us can deal with the current world outside our windows.

Umm, I am white. Can one be racist against their own race?

Is that like that Dave Chappelle skit with the black KKK member, where he shows up at a rally and one of the 'regular' Klan guy's head explodes?
And yeah, I was here twenty years ago, and I'll be here twenty years from now -- by that point the novelty will have worn off and the wealthy, self-righteous, long-term tourists making all the noise about 'their nabe' and their kids will be gone, and things will hopefully return to normal like they were for the rest of the borough's long history. -
20 years ago, in the late 70's, the 80's and the early 90's, violent crime was rampant! It's actually gotten much better due, in part, to "gentrification" (although there's still too much of it). If things do "return to normal like they were for the rest of the borough's long history" - we have a big problem!!

Dunno what _you_ are talking about... I'm, of course, FAR too young (and fair) to remember it, but it is to my understanding that the area was originally quite an upscale community. Do we not have the vintage pictures of carriages and top hats on our very streets to verify this?
Of course, a return to such times would be a big problem for me, on the rent-o-meter. So if _that_ is what you meant, then carry on, my wayward son. And be a bit more clear next time. -
Obamanut wrote: Umm, I am white. Can one be racist against their own race?
OMG! You hate _yourself_?
That is very sad.
And possibly goes a long way towards explaining the 12yo girl fascination.Obamanut wrote: Is that like that Dave Chappelle skit with the black KKK member, where he shows up at a rally and one of the 'regular' Klan guy's head explodes?
Dave Chappelle? Isn't that the guy that turned down the role of Bubba in Forest Gump (which of course went on to win a number of Best Picture awards) because he thought it was demeaning to black people? That guy?
Did his head _really_ explode, or are you just making that up?Obamanut wrote: And yeah, I was here twenty years ago, and I'll be here twenty years from now -
Come now, you _know_ that we all think the world of you. You are not trapped into this way of life. The power is within you to escape the fate and make something more of yourself. You don _have_ to accept that which you are given and idle your life away. For inspiration, consider watching The Last Dragon, where Leroy Green eventually realizes that the power is within him, and always has been. He just had to recognize it.

Um. Actually, if the area is truly returning to normal (meaning how it has been "for the rest of the borough's long history") then _that_ would mean that the folks you speak of are _staying_. Just FYI, hope this helps, and keep the faith, brother! -
You know this thread is going down hill fast when we find ourselves referring to Leroy Green.

Dude, it was already at the bottom of the hill. I'm just trying to impart some of The Glow to it, sho-nuff!

I'm with you dude! the rest of youse just can't handle the new york in your face bluntness. It might have been more violent 20-30 years ago but it was also a lot more interesting and the music scene wasn't lame and laden with "irony" and cutsey crap. -

Thanks for helping out.
I wish I had the courage to stomp the macho one that came up to me.
I wish my dog was a pitbull, not a mini schnauzer
I wish the 3-4 people standing on the sidewalk on the other side of the victim had stepped in too.. maybe we could have held the guys.
I wish the cops came sooner so they had a chance of catching someone
I wish this had never happened
Thanks for taking care of an injured stranger.
It would have helped nobody if you had gotten yourself injured.
Now you have learned that you need to catch the license number, but you acted nobly.
Howdy, Stranger!
