Anyone want to ride out to Rockaway or Long Beach this Sun? — Brooklynian

Anyone want to ride out to Rockaway or Long Beach this Sun?

**UPDATE** The original post was for Saturday, but since the Escape from New York City ride is also on Saturday, this has been changed to Sunday.

It's supposed to be in the mid-70s on Sunday, and given that October is only 2 weeks away, this might be one of our last weekends of beach weather for a long, long while (don't think I'm ready for this winter).

Any interest on riding out to Rockaway Beach (Ft Tilden or Jacob Riis)? Round trip, it'd be roughly 35-40 miles. Alternately, we could go to Coney Island (if there was interest from folks who want to go, but don't want to ride)

- OR -

if you wanted to go a little further, we could 'escape' from the city and head to Long Beach (just keep going once you pass Rockaway Beach), which would be about 50 miles roundtrip.

Heck, lets make it a poll

  • Grrr...next two weekends suck for me with the moving and all. If you do go, I'll be jealous. Have fun!

Awww, drag! That's too bad. Good luck with the packing (I'm assuming you're not moving until next week (?))
  • I'm working all weekend, so I'm out.
  • Escape New York century is this weekend otherwise I'd be up for a ride to Long Beach. It's one of my favorite rides.

  • Sorry, would love to but I'll be hiking in Peru.
  • i bike out to riis every weekend, or twice, weather-permitting. i was planning for sunday this weekend: forecast is warmer for sunday and the shore beaches tend to be cooler this time of year. this past sunday was gorgeous on riis!!! not crowded and the ocean perfect for swimming. waves were rocking but not obnoxious and i was able to see my feet in shoulder-high water.

i usually depart the GAP area at 1230 with portable cocktail in my backpack and decamp in the dyke part of riis for a few hours of frolicking, reading, napping. back in the 'hood by 6, latest. i mostly do this solo, but anyone who wants to join is welcome, especially if you like to frisbee or scrabble or talk progressive shite.
  • I too, am riding the Escape New York this weekend so will need to "save my legs".

    Have fun!
  • Good idea... I'd probably be up for it as well but I can't this weekend.

Sure, we could try that, but let's see how the weather is next weekend. Where past Long Beach would you want to go?
  • Shoot! I just checked the Escape from NYC ride and found that it's on Saturday instead of Sunday, as I thought.

Since that's the case, how many folks would be interested in going on *Sunday*? I know all you Escape from NYC riders will probably have some dead legs, but just in case, what do you think?

What??!!! I thought it was on Sunday too! Thanks for pointing this out, I would've missed it otherwise!

Not sure how I'll feel on Sunday - if you do go, please post details and if I have the energy I'll join you.
  • I am going to do the Escape from New York Ride as well. Think my legs won't make it a second day on the road. Have fun!

It sounds like a consensus is emerging of going on Sunday, and 12:30 sounds like a good time as well. Where in GAP do you want to meet? Usually, for the midnight rides, folks meet under the arch.

For anyone else who's interested, PM me for my #, so we can coordinate on Sunday.
  • Sunday = Football, sorry.
  • I'm curious what's the route to Long Beach from Rockaway Beach? R. Beach Blvd/Seagirt to the Nassau Expy?

Yep, that's it exactly. The only issue is on the way back, making sure that you go back via the Riis Park boardwalk, as your only other option forces you out onto Beach Channel Drive which is very, *very* scary cuz drivers are coming out onto that going 50-60 mph. I seriously cr!#ped my pants the one and only time I ever made that mistake.
  • No other way to come back really. I made the mistake of hitting Rockaway Blvd from Five Towns to Prospect Heights. Not to much bike friendly road and the path across from JFK is littered with bottles and razor like shrubs. I won't even go into the Conduit.
  • Mr and Mrs whynot may join in this activity, but won't know until Sat evening.

...so, post if you are not going to leave from GAP on Sun at 12:30. thanks

If there are other folks who are planning on going, can you pls post and/or pm me? I'm probably going to crash at a friend's place in Manhattan tonight so it'd be a real drag to get back to GAP by 12:30 and find that I'm the only one there.

    Thx!
  • we are not going to join you, but thanks for the offer.
