Dear Joyce... — Brooklynian

Dear Joyce...

You need to expand your hours!! I got there just in time tonight, and as I sat on your bench after you'd closed, I watched a steady parade be gravely disappointed as they approached and realized you were closed. Prospect Heights needs an evening coffee shop, and there is no question you would get the business to make it profitable. Mondays would be nice too.

Joyce is so unfortunately not on my radar because of the bad hours. But yeah, all those people coming off out of the restaurants on Vanderbilt need a place for a good coffee afterwards. Maybe they should consider it at least on the weekends.
  • Not exactly the same thing, but Blue Marble on Underhill is open until at least 10 most nights.

    Coffee is better too.

I wouldn't say better, but they both have good coffee.

The last 3 times I went to Joyce the coffee tasted burnt. Never going back.

Plus the laptop A*holes taking up tables for 4 hours sucks.

    :(
  • It's not just the evenings, the morning hours are even worse. Not open until 7:30 AM on a weekday morning? Not open until 9 AM on weekends? I like my coffee when I wake up, thank you very much.
  • P.S. Joyce, why are your tiny non-scrumptious croissants $2.50?? Why is everything so ridiculously expensive? I would go there on my way to work if i wasn't able to take the Q into MANHATTAN and save like $5.00. I can't believe Joyces stays in business with those prices.
  • I love you, Joyce. You let me sit and knit on a Saturday with nary a dirty look. And you have tasty cupcakes.

My only request would be to change your music mix (no more adding, just take a few of the frequent repeats off). And have longer evening hours.
  • Opening at 9am on weekends is horrific. I'm up and ready way before then. Joyce's hours made me start making my own coffee. Thanks Joyce!

$2.50 for the worlds tiniest croissant that doesn't even taste housemade? That made me order up a frozen batch from Williams-Sonoma and defrost one overnight and bake in the am. Yummy, hot, French and cheaper. Thanks again, Joyce!
  • I have to say that even with a long line, those wonderful people stay calm, collect and very smiley. I appreciate that. Otherwise, winter is coming, longer hours are needed and those croissants are awesome... don't care the cost... they are yummy in my tummy.
  • true, it would be nice if they were open earlier, later, and mondays but i have a soft spot for those rosewater french maccaroons and guerilla coffee...
  • The twentysomething heavier-set woman that always seems to be working there on Sunday noontime is absolutely lovely. I put a good tip in the jar for her great conversations. :)

I love the girl who works there during the week (she always has a bandanna on). She knows what I like and makes great suggestions too.
  • Yeah, I adore the staff there. They remember what I order, they make suggestions (just as stacey said), and they're smiley and kind (as poppy13 mentioned).

Genuinely friendly places in the nabe get my business over less expensive ones with so-so customer service any day. I prefer patronizing Joyce once a week or so as a real treat than visiting a different cheaper place several times each week.

    *edited for my poor spelling

I like her too she is lovely!!!
  • So this thread had me craving some Joyce today and they have these delicious coffee cream puffs for $1.00. It was big enough for two!
  • I totally agree about the friendly woman behind the counter. I don't go to Joyce that often, but when I do, it's always a pleasure to be served by her. I assumed that she is the owner, but if she's not, she deserves a big promotion.
  • Joyce is going to have some competition soon.

    Do tell.
  • The hazelnut macaroons are really good (was in there the other day) but I wish they would bring back the rosewater ones. I am going to start writing them letters about it. They were magical
  • i'm jumping on the joyce-dislike bandwagon... usually i go to heights coffee, but since it was downpouring when i needed my caffeine fix, i ran to joyce instead because it was closer.

i had planned to make an afternoon of it, as i had quite a bit of work to do. however, lo and behold... joyce has no wi fi on the weekends! of course, i found this out after i bought my weak coffee and lackluster pastry. next time i'll walk the extra block.

I'm with you on the wifi, but I don't understand how you complain about weak coffee at Joyce and then say you like Heights Coffee. Joyce's coffee is much stronger and better than Heights Coffee.
  • Heights coffee is swill and their pastries are mediocre. It's too bad because they are super convenient, have good hours and a nice environment. Is it that hard to make a decent cup or to buy some good fresh pastries?

Funny, I had used almost those exact words, but then went back and edited it because I thought it sounded too harsh. But you're right. Heights coffee is swill.
  • Blue Marble easily trumps Joyce for a morning go-to place, in my opinion. (And I happen to live closer to it.) They carry Bergen bagels, and they have much better coffee than Joyce (not to mention quality ice cream for later in the day). Much, much-needed addition to the neighborhood.

Harsh, but true. Went there once, was disappointed. Thought that it was fluke so I went back. Nope. Have not returned. What a wasted opportunity!

All Heights has going for it is convenience. It's literally all they've got.

Now why is it that I always forget Prospect Perk is there?
