Tom's Diner Song
Subject: Tom's Diner Song
Well apparently when Suzanne Vega sang about Tom's Diner, it was the other one. Hrumph. Oh well, have been to both (many times) and I like OURS better.See: http://measureformeasure.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/23/toms-essay/index.html

Thank God! I once got into an argument with an old roomie who swore UP AND DOWN that its the Brooklyn one she's singing about because she grew up here or lived here back then or something. Even after I said, "well, what about the part about the 'bells of the cathedral?!', from St. John the Divine. She wouldn't hear it and insisted! So annoying, so I really glad to see this proof.
Thanks, Silly! -
I read that, too! I agree - our Tom's is better. I think that Ms. Vega should visit Prospect Heights and sit for a chat with Gus!

GUS IS THE BEST!

Thats odd - why do they have a signed copy of the lyrics on the wall? "I came, I saw, I wrote"

I think one of the review on the wall at Tom's mentions that the signed copy of lyrics mysteriously appeared in the mail one day. Maybe it was a fan, or something? I have no idea.

Perhaps.. not authentic sig?
Just a suggestion.
I haven't been to the PH Tom's yet but out of a sense of rabid localism I say it is better anyway! -
Don't mean to be a B*tch but...
What has Suzanne Vega done lately?
And does it really matter where she wrote that little
charming song from 1981?

Well, she's been writing very interesting monthly pieces on songwriting for the NYT, for one.
What has Suzanne Vega done lately?

And, like lots and lots of barely-known musicians, she's put out studio albums every so often, including one last year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzanne_Vega#Studio_Albums
Finally, she learned how to drive a car in 2003:

So yeah, Suzanne Vega's managed to keep herself busy.
(Also, for the record: no, I'm not a card-carrying fan. I don't own any albums by her, though I do have a mp3 or 2 of hers floating around somewhere...) -
dooo dooo dooo doo dooo dooo dooo doo dooo dooo dooo doo

I have to chime in, but I'm not trying to brag! A couple friends and I went to see Suzanne play at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple last month, and we were the only die-hards who stuck around to meet her afterward. While she was on stage she said "Apparently there's a Tom's Diner here in Brooklyn . . . but this song isn't about it." Obviously we had to bring it up when we talked to her, since it's in the 'hood, and we chatted for a good long while about it. And the "signed" lyrics on the wall? - News to her.

there's no signature on the lyrics. could have been anybody. someone should play the same joke on the two tom's diner too.

What is the big deal about tom´s. I mean i have been going there since i was a kid, the food is unremarkable, its just a diner for god´s sake!
Howdy, Stranger!
