Brooklyn Back When - Open Thread

Hi Bloggers. As I noted in an earlier posting, I just heard about this blog this week and have been reading all of the posts. By luck (I'm no computer whiz), I found the original thread and spent the last few days reading them. They brought back memories that I totally forgot, especially about St. Johns.
I remember sitting with your class for 9am Sunday mass & the nuns giving you the stare if you didn't kneel right...no butts on the pew. Stations of the cross with your class on Fridays in Lent. I remember having Sister Lucien in the 2nd grade(what a treat after Sr. Raymond DeSalles in the 1st grade!) & being told over the PA that JFK had been shot & her having us kneel on the floor next to our desks to pray for him. I also remember the church being open all the time.
Also remember 1pm Wednesdays and Sundew orange drink instead of milk for a snack...it went great with the pretzel. I remember that the nuns had those little round pitch pipes that they used when we had to sing...like Immaculate Mary. Can't forget the May Crowning in the churchyard (my older brother carried the crown on the pillow in the procession when he was in kindergarten & was none too happy about it!). I also remember the Baltimore Catechism and the nuns asking "Who made you?" and us answering "God made me" , etc...religion by rote.
Didn't mean this to be so religious sounding, but one St. John's memory lead to another.. Thanks for letting me share.
Hi to Maria Costaldo & Festina Guzzo.
Patsy - can't remember his name, but how's Nat's brother, I think he married Terry Tufano's friend? -
Hola: (Again)
i have been going to lectures all week with different speakers: Some of u might know this, but for those who don't. One of the speakers suggested to google your name to see what information is by your name. He said, many people don't know this. He said other may people google your name and write stuff alongside of your name.
If you find that is the case the only way you can get rid of the detrimental stuff is for you to write, or for you to get people that know you to write some positive things about you. This way the positive information is on the top of the page and the negative is on the bottom.
Just a bit of information. -
Terry-You're a pissa. Why don't you start a business with my sister Christina as President and CEO, organizing re-unions nation wide. You don't seem to have any other life-except baby sitting. Reality shows and cooking. lol, Is there anything I can do to help you?
-
Hola: i don't know why i am coming up as guest instead of newbi, oh well that should be the least of my problems.

PS: Lucia & Deetzie: it was grand seeing you too. -

One of the highlights for me was visiting with you ladies, ROSIE I brought you a message on an index card from Nina Lovaglio Those 8x10 size photo's were great to look at. Better then the ones your son Joey showed me from his wallet, I couldn't see them !!! You looked great !
JOANIE- Just hugging you was wonderful. I LOVED seeing all your photo's, got to see your son SaL. Your book is a lot to take in, all I can say is you LADIES are something else. It was a pleasure to spend some time with you both.
IF ANYONE CAN PASS THIS MESSAGE TO THEM..... THANK YOU
Carol D. Lovaglio -
Hi Everyone:
Just a note to say thanks again to Terry and all involved in the Reunion. It was a blast. Funny how this blog gets people together. My mom didn't make it to the reunion but got in touch with her old friend, Joan "Red" Calciano and went to pay her a visit today!!
We must get the word out for next year's reunion - where was everyone who graduated St. John's in 1969? Got to find those characters.
It was great rekindling old friendships and making new ones!!
Can't wait until next year. We've got to spread the word.
Laura -
CAROL,
I WILL RELAY THE MESSAGE TO SAL JOANIE RED'S SON RIGHT NOW. LOVE TERRY [-o< -

Hola: Linda Joy: Let me know i will make the rice and beans for you, maybe what we could do instead of going to a restaurant we could all bring a dish of food, but if you want to go out that is fine too. i guess we could decide when the time comes. I make pretty good Rice and Beans but i think that timmmmmmeeee makes it seem that the rice and beans were better than what it really was. Yes my Moms used to make outrageous Rice and Beans. That reminds me, i am going to defrost the Vegetable Pastelles for tomorrow.
Pinky, carol, linda lets come to an agreement on a date, this way i will not baby sit that day.
Rosie Marsella: I finished reading Joan's book, Love, Hope and Tragedy, i want to commend you on your friendship with Joan, it's not often you find a friendship like that, you are a remarkable woman.
Joan, Joann, Josephine and Carol the ride back to brooklyn was fun. we were able to talk. remember what we promised ourselves, we have a date, playing cards and we each bring a dish. It was good seeing you again Josephine, after soooo many years.

Hi, finally got on line with my lap top. I am lost without the internet. When people write in as guests, it would be easier if they said who they were, instead of guest !!! Even the Italian Princess from 20th & 8th who never identified herself ????? Who are you and why aren't you telling us???
Tomorrow Millie, Carol, and I are going out to lunch with Terry, Millie's Mom. We are all staying over at Marilyn's house tomorrow night and expect to have a lot of fun. Wish you were there Terry & Bob of course. -
TAS: I became aware of the reunion and this "thread" or blog through my sister Marilyn. Some of the people involved (I gather) had been communicating and even meeting previously. Where there any efforts to advertise in the neighborhood - like with flyers or just calling people ? What about for the future ?
By the way, between the past and the future is the present and I am glad to see people (last post above by Patsy) talking about current (and common) interests. Anybody a kayaker out there ? How about in-line skater ? These are two of my avid interests besides live concerts. I also still like to dance (and was thinking originally that we might be "gettin down" at the reunion).
Anyway, I would like to hear about people's interests, hobbies.....how they spend their time (outside the blog). -
.....also, by the way.....my wife Arlene (who some of you know) has become fanatically interested in horses in recent years and has owned one (a Halfliner.....Austrian draft horse a mite bigger than a pony but broad and made for carrying loads or pulling carriage etc.). If you want to see both of them, there is a nice, short video on You Tube. Just type in "Charm's Greeting" into the You Tube search.
-
Talking about horses, there used to be vegetable peddlers in the neighborhood who would pull their goods through the street on horse drawn carts. Mr. Price up the street from us would always try to be the first one to run out and scoop up the manure from the street to use in his garden. There were also cobble stones on the street (20th Street) at that time.
Also, I remember as a kid seeing this man with an accordion and monkey walking through the street playing music and having the monkey collect coins in a cup. In recent years, when I travel to parts of India I see perhaps too many wild monkeys and had a big one jump on my back and tore my shirt because he saw me carrying some food. Not to mention the cows, goats, chickens, pigs and other animals that are roaming all over. Maybe the fact that I like seing these animals in the roads in India has something to do with the past memories of animals in the streets of Brooklyn. Probably not. More likely that I just like being in places that are more natural, open and full of animals. Probably why I sometimes feel that some of the super clean cities in places like Switzerland seem downright sterile and boring. -
BOB: Can't get the video to load all the way yet. Will try to see it on Marilyn's computer.
-
Is that so?? LOL, Janet

T-Bone 51: Thanks for reminding me about the Italian Princess (whoever this mysterious woman happens to be). I am going to bed now and will be counting Italian Princesses in my head. Makes more sense than those people who count sheep in bed.....and I won't even go there.
Howdy, Stranger!
