Kitchen Designers--Reccomendations Needed....

Hello Neighbors:
I've decided to do a complete kitchen renovation. Can you please reccommend a designer? I'd also like your thoughts on IKEA Kitchens...Good? Bad? Economical? Waste of $$$? All feedback will be appreciated.

  • We got an Ikea kitchen about a year ago and really like it. It's much (MUCH) cheaper than other brands but good quality, especially if you go for one of the more expensive, solid-wood styles. Of course, the styles are all kind of Swedish semi-modern, so if that's not your thing, it's not a good option.

If you decide to go with them, they recommend a measuring service (so you don't screw it up yourself) for a small fee. The service includes a schematic drawing based on your preferences. So on ours we rearranged the appliances a little, which was actually the measuring guy's idea, and added a pantry. They drew it up for us and gave us a printout of everything we needed based on the cabinet style we said we wanted--that way, you don't have to keep track of how many drawer tracks or SP234234 cabinet frame pieces you need. You just take the list back to Ikea and have them ring it all up.

This was back when you had to shlep to Elizabeth to shop from Ikea; it's got to be more convenient now with the store in Red Hook.
  • Subject: kitchen designers

I agree, Ikea kitchens, if chosen carefully are a great buy. However, my housemates put in cabinetry to their kitchen downstairs from Ikea and the measuring was a nightmare. I certainly would not have been up to doing it. They had to replace things that they had mis-measured etc.

If you do want a rec for a great inexpensive Brooklyn designer, Bob Ed Pierce is wonderful and I've known him for years -- very reliable and super good with designing spaces. Not sure I should post his info here, but if you're curious, you can email me at:

Describe briefly what you want to do and I will pass your email on to him to get in touch.
    Good luck!
  • Here is another vote for IKEA. We installed our kitchen 4 years ago and it has held up very well. And I can tell you from personal experience: I measured it all myself (how hard could it be?), I screwed it up, and we had to re-order half of the cabinets. So seriously consider hiring the measuring service. :P

I can also recommend an architect who designs many kitchens. He has done work for us in the past and which we have loved (still do). He is local and doesn't charge an outrageous fee, plus is well connected to installers, etc.

Bryce Taylor, [email protected]. Tell him a "roof decker" referred you.
  • We didn't go with IKEA, but overall I was impressed with the quality you got for the price. We needed all kinds of adjustments for our cabinets, and that meant that IKEA's dimensions just wouldn't work for us.

We ended up with cabinets from Lowe's, and had their installers do the work. The process was relatively painless and smooth (other than dealing with no kitchen for 3 weeks--but there's no way to avoid that). There were a few (minor) hiccups, but we were able to work them out, and we are thrilled with our kitchen.

My one piece of advice would be to take your time picking out cabinets and a layout. Don't be afraid to change your mind several times, experiment with different layouts (graph paper is helpful), and visit the store over and over again (I think that the Lowe's kitchen people knew us by name, eventually).
