Volunteer for New York Cares Day P.S.9
I just got this from Daily Candy... you can register to volunteer to help spruce up P.S. 9. I am definitely volunteering... if anyone else is interested let me know...
New School Volunteer for New York Cares Day

Come fall, you’re so desperate to reclaim the back-to-school spirit that you buy uniforms (new clothes), book bags (purses), and pencils (lipstick).
Here’s a better idea: Stop making yourself over. Help us make over a school instead.
As part of New York Cares Day on October 18, DailyCandy is sprucing up P.S. 9 in Prospect Heights. And we need 100 volunteers (you! you! you!) to do it with us.
We’re doing an art project — painting murals throughout the school. In the cafeteria, the science and arts labs, the culinary and dance studios. (Grade school has gotten cooler since you were there.) Our artists will be Decoradar’s Jennifer Smith and DailyCandy’s own Alison DeBenedictis.
Your assignment: Sign up to join DailyCandy’s team. For extra credit, ask friends and family to make donations in honor of your work. (They don’t have to know how much fun you’ll have.)
No homework. No teacher’s dirty looks. Just school how it shoulda been.
Register to join the DailyCandy team at newyorkcaresday.org.

wow, sounds great.
they've already filled up, from the look of it. -
I think they are still taking volunteers for P.S 9 even though they surpassed there recruitment goal.
If you work for a company or some sort of organization look around the site, there are numerous volunteer opportunities sponsored by private/public companies and organizations in NYC Public Schools on Oct 18th. -
I received this too! And I'll definitley be there! This is a great way to give back!

I see a lot of PK-5 aged white kids (and their parents!) in Prospect Heights. Why does www.greatschools.net show a 2% enrollment of white children at P.S. 9? What schools do all these PH parents send their children?

PS 9 is not the only school for PH. Depending on where you live in PH you attend your "zone" school. Also children who test into the gifted program may have to attend a different school than the one they are zoned for.

I really have not seen many older (say grade 4-5) children moving into PH but many of the newer residents' children are just starting school.
Here is a more accurate representation of the school and the difference in the past 3 years.

JUST AND FYI for all those volunteering - PS 9 is always looking for volunteers to help out. Whether it be attending trips with the class, reading to the Pre K and K students or just sharing anything about your culture or history. -
there are also public charter schools you can send your kid to if you don't like your zoned school.

We are just outside the zone for PS 9, (i.e., on the wrong side of the street) and when I tried to find out whether they had a variance process, I was told bluntly, "No." And every time I asked I got the same answer. So we got my daughter into a different school that did, through a lottery (where she and we are very happy, despite the commute).
We would have been happy to go through whatever hoops or lottery PS 9 asked, but they were not interested. It really put me off them, frankly. Loads of other public schools were in confusion this past spring, thanks to the godsdamn DoE, but only 9 was completely uninterested in out-of-zone kids. -

PS 9 is a school in transition. This is probably the first year that the school experienced such a flood of potential students clambering for seats. Between the evolving neighborhood and the NYCBOE school enrollment chaos, I don't think the administration of PS 9 was ready for the deluge of applications they received.
We are fortunate to live in the district and our youngest son enrolled in pre-k this fall. We are thrilled with the school. One of our friends from Crown Heights had her son on the pre-K waiting list for the first few weeks of school but no seats opened up and she ended up enrolling her child at PS 282.
Please don't judge PS 9 harshly from this experience; there are simply not enough places for all the in-district children who want to attend. -
We live just 4 blocks from the school. Our son attended pre-k at PS9 three years ago. The pre-k was great, the staff were very hard working and dedicated. We eventually transferred him to another school simply because the level of student discipline in the older grades was so poor. That, and he came home using the word "shit" as pronoun

Interesting because my son went there from pre-k to 5th grade and never had one problem. -
I just received an email and they are still looking for volunteers so if anyone is still interested let me know and I will pass the info on to you.

I'll be there tomorrow. Should be fun!
