Any former peacecorps / americorps members? — Brooklynian

Any former peacecorps / americorps members?

I'm looking into joining the Peace Corps or Americorps next year and was wondering if there are any veterans around here who could give me advice / help me understand what to expect and which program would be right for me.

  • It depends, what is your ethnic background. I was in Morocco in 07
  • i did city year chicago (americorps) in 2000-2001.

if that's a program you're interested in, i'd be happy to talk about pros and cons.
  • prime, I'm your basic American, middle-class white boy and just graduated from college a year ago. I realize placement is usually beyond your control in the Peace Corps but if I had a choice I'd probably choose sub-saharan Africa. Could you tell me about your experience in Morocco?

sweet tea, I think I'm looking at a different program. I forgot the specific name, but it's region-based (a region being fairly large, like the entire West Coast for example). The catch is the serving age range for the program is 18 to 24 and I just turned 24 so I may not get in that one.

That said I'd still love to hear about your experience in Chicago and am open to other programs.
  • americorps is an umbrella group for 600 or so smaller programs. city year is the oldest and (i think still) the largest. it was in 13 cities when i was a corps member, more now.

if city year's not your thing, that's cool -- i'm not sure i'd choose it again, frankly.

the biggest general lesson i learned is to pay attention to how well-administered the program you're interested in is. i liked the admin bunch in general at CY and wouldn't have thought it mattered much how good they were at their jobs, since they were friendly. but it was incredible how frustrating it became. the work -- like all americorps work, i'd imagine -- was difficult, tiring, and often frustrating. that's okay; it needed doing, and we were willing to work hard. but the administration should have been supporting us, not being an unnecessary burden. they weren't bad people, just less competent on the whole than i would have liked.

that said, the staff at chicago has changed since my time in the corps; it may well be a great place to work now. but whatever program you're looking at, i'd advise you to pay attention to the folks in charge as well as the mission, day to day work, etc.
  • Wow, honestly that never crossed my mind. I guess I just assumed that it would be run by people knowing what they're doing though I have enough experience by now to know that, sadly, that usually isn't the case for large organizations. Do you know how I'd be able to find such information? I guess finding people from the programs would be best though they could be difficult.
