Rental Car Company? — Brooklynian

Rental Car Company?

Are there any rental car companies in Prospect Heights? We will normally zip car it, but for a long weekend the zip cars are way to expensive. Thanks.

  • don't know about that, but here's a fun fact i just learned about renting a car in nyc:

dollar charges brooklyn resident (and bronx and queens) an extra $50 per day. nice, huh? they tell you when you come to pick up the car, even if you're holding your "guaranteed rate" confirmation from travelocity. seems soooo legal.

thrifty doesn't. i know this because the bronx resident working at dollar is a great person.
  • Subject: All Car

    http://allcarrentacar.com/

This place is great - it's not in PH but it's in north Park Slope which is a close enough walk. They're really nice and no bullshit. Just reserve online, go in and pick up the car, drop it off no probs. I always use them for weekends since Zip gets too pricey.
  • There was a recent thread too.
That place on Union told me 55 a day, and 65 on weekend days./
Still using the bensonhurst enterprise. right now I can get an economy car for $45 a day
  • I have never rented a car before, but through Groupon just got a year-long ZipCar membership. (purchased not for this trip, but for some shopping I have coming up).

That said, we're looking to get away from the city for 48 hours (Friday evening through Sunday evening). I can't figure out which is actually the better deal though. Did anyone do some real comparison to figure it out? Here's what I've figured so far:

We plan to go to Cooperstown -- which we are figuring would require about 460 miles to get there, drive around down, and get back.

    Zip Car
    - $115 per day on weekends
    - 100 miles more than included (180 miles per 24 hours = 360 miles included) at $0.45 per extra mile
    - Includes gas and insurance
    = total of ($115 x 2) + ($45) = $275

Car Rental (All Car as suggested above)
    - $65.99 per day
    - taxes, fees, etc.
    - $57.92 for insurance
    = total of ($65.99 x 2) + taxes/fees + $57.92 = $227.65
PLUS GAS. Let's say that's 360 miles with a car getting maybe 25 mpg at $3 per gallon = $43.20
    = total of $270.85

So we are literally talking $4.15 more to use Zip Car. Is this really correct? Or am I missing something? Zip Car doesn't seem as crazy expensive for a weekend trip in comparison, but maybe there's some other reason to not take them out of town.

    Thoughts?

    THANK YOU!!

I chose ZipCar for a weekend trip back in March after pricing everything out much like you did. The ease of having the cars right in the neighborhood really won me over and found it was worth my time to spend a few dollars extra.
  • Enterprise is in Park Slope, not PH, but they will pick you up, so it kind of doesn't matter where it is.
  • Car Load -- Thank you! I just had only heard people saying "it's great for hourly rentals but not for a weekend" and thought I was losing it.

Carnivore -- From what I found online, Enterprise was $40 more per day than AllCar and made me (at least when trying to reserve online) keep the car until Monday because they weren't open on Sundays and therefore I had to pay for another day.
  • for a real deal we always took the train up to north white plains hertz; only about $38 per day -- that's without insurance -- plus the $10 metro north one-way fare. not always convenient to have to take the train both ways but definitely the cheapest. and laid back, no frills rental outlet, which i like very much.

also: if you can make do without buying the overpriced insurance, such as if your credit card or something else covers it (or if you want to risk it) it's much, MUCH more affordable.
  • we also always found zipcar to be the same as it ever was; meaning just as, if not more, expensive than typical rental car companies. the only difference in our opinion? marketing. but i'm open and willing to hear contradictory experiences on that.
  • Subject: This was my go-to place before I got a car last year

Right on Union and 7th, so close enough to almost be in PH. The cars aren't the newest, but they were cheaper than Zip car and they'd usually throw in thursday free.

  • Just another hint for future reference, its cheaper to rent cars from the big companies (Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, Dollar, etc) at the airport. My last rental I took LIRR to Jamaica ($8) and Airtrain to car rental place ($5) and saved almost $70 on the cost of the weekend rental.
  • oh thanks everyone! I will keep on researching!

  • I use All Car.
...the main reason I use them is that I can drop off the car on Sunday evenings in the bowels of the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott.

    Nope, it's not cheap.
  • Enterprise in Manhattan is 9 dollars cheaper on average than in Brooklyn
