New Queer Night at Barrette!

I am surprised that it has taken this long.. It will be interesting to say the least. But Belle has to be the best dancer i have seen at Barrette and she is so cute and she is always sweet to me when we run into each other. Good luck with the party! And as most of you know Barrette is my favorite bar in PH!

Sneaky here! -
sweet! I'll check it out.
-
Cool...ill tell my wife
-
will there be any men?
-
I thought Queer applied to both sides of the spectrum, i guess i was wrong. Yes there will be men, the straight ones who turn gay after a couple of shots and 10 beers..HAHAHHHAH!
-
"the straight ones who turn gay after a couple of shots and 10 beers..HAHAHHHAH!"
in that case, i'm SO there.
yeah, queer does usually mean both genders, but the female go go dancer confused me... -
does it have a name/flyer/myspace/website?
-

I think barrette has female go-go dancers regularly so I don't think that really means a whole lot in terms of who is welcome and who will show, if that makes sense. see you there!

cool. i know some folks who are going to come by for sure.
-
I'll be there post-franny's. see y'all soon.
-
how was it? [turnout, demographic, ambiance]. i wish i could've been there for the inaugural, but was outtatown on family obligs. is this gonna be a regular thang?
-
great. maybe 95% ladies.. mostly ph/slope/ev/so. slope peeps.
-
I wandered in around 9:30 or so and the place was slammed. and loud. and young. so, er, I went and drank champagne with the working peeps stuck at beast. whoops.
I found out later some folks I know were near the stage but I couldn't see it from the door/2 ft. in that I could manage to wander into.
how were the not-naked lap dances? -
ahahahah @ NOT NAKED lap dances... already sounds like a bad time ahahahh
-
Atlantic antic got me pretty hammered!!! i hope you guys had fun, by the time i got to soda i was pretty loaded!!!
-
I'm wondering if this is going to be a semi-regular thing. I know last night was someone's birthday (lap-dance recipient), so it might have been a thing just for the occassion. fwiw, I don't really agree about the young thing - though obviously that's relative. I think the crowd was actually older than the average queer party, especially in BK... most of the folks I knew there were in their early/mid 30s.
-
Talk to the manager, she will be more than willing to make it a regular thing. Plus the ring must have been a record for a Sunday!
-
is it gonna be regular? i wanna check it out.
-
interesting approach, given that the saloon that will open across there (old housebroken space) will be very queer oriented.
wrt the crowd, when I wandered in, it was super loud, getting at the bar was a pain, etc. kinda all the the things I hate about a bar. I'm 33 and I guess most folks I know around my age appreciate loud music for dancing/live music but otherwise want to actually hold a conversation that doesn't involve shouting.
but that's also my general complaint about most bars - plz put heaters outside so there's a quiet space instead of forcing everyone who wants to talk to more than 1 person to just hang out in bars until they get too loud and then just have house parties. irritating but obvi some folk love it. (perhaps this is why I appreciate the upstairs at the 'shack or milk & honey/weather up before 9 something p.m.) -
i kind of like loud bars, even though i do enjoy weathered up..

Subject: future details
Hey, folks--
I'm the organizer slash dancer of the queer night. Sunday was awesome, I must report, with a chill crowd and great music. To answer some questions:
a) I performed a striptease, not a lapdance, for the birthday girl (turning 30, by the way, so not young as all that), a cheeky display (so to speak). This is not normally what goes on at Barrette. It was a special display. (The crowd may have been especially raucous for this reason.)
b) Barrette is known for its go-go dancers. I am one. And let me tell you, I work it. I give a real show. No boring half-naked awkwardness. No forced sexiness. Just lively dancin', good humor and some sweat. (I've been a burlesque dancer for a while. If you're interested in seeing what it's all about, you can myspace Bloody Belle and/or youtube me). It's all in good fun, but I do understand the folks that want a more laid-back experience. Barrette offers that many other nights of the week!
c) I STRONGLY encourage bringing in a broad, diverse crowd for this night. Men, women, trans, etc. With all respect to the woman who came and checked out early, the crowd was a mix of people in their mid-late 30s/early 40s and mid-late 20s (I'm a late-20s person, fyi). I'm trying to get this going as an ALTERNATIVE to jailbait williamsburg queer parties. That being said, this will be more of a laidback dance-party kind of vibe rather than a "let's go get to know each other on a first date" sorta thing. At the moment, I plan on doing a couple go-go sets later in the evening (10ish-11) because people seem to...well...like it! But that might change if it discourages a broader pull of people.
d) It's almost a done deal that we're going to do this monthly. Probably first Sundays of the month for now. Myspace/flyers/etc. to come when we get finality on dates/name, etc.
e) It was such a joy to dance for and mingle with my fellow queers. I sincerely hope to see more of you there next month! I'll post more info soon. -
again, interesting. I'm glad for all that was going on, and I'm pretty sure I know the bday girl - I play poker with her on occasion.
but that doesn't matter: my issue was mainly that I could barely see the bar, much less into the bar. as someone showing up alone, it's QUITE offputting. clearly, if a night is successful at a bar or club, that is the goal = the big money. again, I'm not so into that, especially on a sunday night. I preferred low key beast, where the music was 80s goth on low and I could actually see the bar and sit down.
that doesn't mean that I think anything needs to change for the barrette night. I'm more curious, frankly, to figure out what happens when a queer bar, a queer owned restaurant and a queer night all happen on, well, the same night, in our nabe. can't wait to hear further developments. I will show up at barrette for queer night again should the mood strike me.
good luck to you and barrette with the monthly thing! -
awesome. super glad you'll be doing it again. not that i don't like going to starlette on sundays, but hey, it's a recession and i'm all about walking to the party and not taking a cab home. great addition to the hood. but yes, the more different kinds of atmospheres, the better..

I was unaware of a queer bar opening up across the street! Faboo. I can't imagine that more opportunities for queer comingling can be a bad thing. People will decide what they like. As a side note: Beast, though queer-owned, is a restaurant. It doesn't cater to gays, in particular (to my knowledge). So it's not really part of the equation.
In terms of the crowd, I want to stress that I think you came in at the apex of activity--right about when the dancing began. That rush of activity ended by 10:30, and people thinned out and hung out until 12. It was very comfortable, and I didn't hear any other complaints about bar service or the loudness of the music. I, for one, hate overbearing loud music at bars. But we're arguing relative points! To each her own and I hope you'll come back again! -
I don't think the country western bar is going to be gay specific...unless I've not been informed correctly. It will be owned by the same owner/owners as Beast, but I don't think it's gay-focused.

i am SO excited about this Barette party being monthly! i moved into PH a few months ago and i love Barette but i've been waiting for a party just like this one to hit our area. Me and a few of my friends heard about this party and went just to check it out and we didn't think there'd be a lot of people cause it was Sunday, but it was very well attended. i don't really understand the complaints about not being able to see the front of the bar - that was probably just for the 5 minutes the dancer was doin a striptease or something. but i hate crowded bars and that's why the other night was great - it was full of people having fun but you could move freely throughout the bar wherever you wanted to go.
the dj was great, the dancer was really good and hot as hell, and the vibe was so much better than other queer spaces. i'm in my late twenties and i usually hang out with people older than me which seemed like most of the crowd there...but there were also some early-mid twenties kids who were awesome too. I also liked that the crowd was so diverse (in literally every way)... it was queer and open to everyone who wanted to have a good time. Whoever organizes this, PLEASE make it monthly! the energy that filled the bar on Sunday was so great, and i left there so happy!
word. i'll be there next time with a crew... -
well damn.. seems like u had quite a good time bkd ... all that was missing was you sayin you picked up a cute girl at the bar and took her ass home...
sounds like a fun time !!! -

I don't think that it's going to be queer as in cattyshack queer, but obvi the owners, most employees and patrons likely will be. I also hear there will be a game room, a stage area, etc. all awesome as far as I'm concerned. -
