I used to save my money, sometimes I would take some of my church offering (God understood I had a sweet tooth) and I would buy the VERY DARK JELLY DONUTS from Nick. He had them in the front counter. To this day I can never find those and once when I thought I did the jelly inside was not dark like his. Thats called a Yummmmmmmmy memory.

Umbria,
Every Christmas when I smell the christmas trees it reminds me of walking along 5th ave, lights, people selling trees and fairyland in germains. I really made u believe in Santa. What wonderful memories of Christmans on 5th ave. THE BEST. Our parents did not have much but christmas was always beautiful. love terry -
Hola: Good morning all. i am up cooking i am making some brown rice and some red beans, i make a bunch and then i freeze in portions. Yesterday i made sauce, from plum tomatoes.
Terry Bones: I received an email from Ralphie Surato and i noticed that he used lower case, i emailed him back using lower case and it has not been returned. So maybe the problem is that his email is case sensitive. ???????.
Christine O: did u get the recipe for the Salad?
Umbria: your name is familiar to my ears, i am still in the hood too. i live on 17 street bet. 3 ad 4th ave. I remember your fathers store.
Bonavitas: I also remember Big Nick, as big as he was that is how gentle he was. Your parents made a good looking couple, they always appeared happy. Debbie, i remember your grandmother; she always looked good, she took great pride in her appearance, she too was a good-looking woman, she was friendly and she always had a kind word. She came into Ludons almost every week, as did your aunts, you Bonavitas come from good stock.
Well that's all folks
A blessed day to all -
Good Morning All: Going for my last Brooklyn Meal today, PIZZA, and may either leave tonight or tomorrow morning. Have to see how tired I am. Sometimes driving at night is very easy. I will play it by ear. I still have to pick up the Keilbasa and Corn Toastees. I got my son 7 layer cookies yesterday, sooooo, almost ready to go.
I will miss you all, but will be on the blog just the same. -
That was from me, Janet
-
Patsy.....My sale was pretty good, just exhausting!!!! I wish I could have taken off yesterday but I don't get paid!!!
Nilda......It's so nice to hear such kind words about my family. It brings back such good memories, but also makes me sad they're not longer here. But I know they are together with EdithAnn. -
Anthony Umbria....I remember being very little and my dad taking us down to the piers to see the nativity scene. It was great.
-
Carol - you're funny!! I love jelly donuts too and you can't find a good one anymore!
I was in the Christmas Tree Shoppe and they have 3 different holidays vying for space - Halloween, Thanksgiving (which had the smallest amount of stuff) and Christmas. So Christmas will be here before you know it!
Marilyn - I'll try your recipe for hot dogs soon. Please, do send the blackend bacon one too. I must have gone to the same cooking school as your grandma. My bacon disintegrates I cook it so much. Now, I only order it out! No muss, no fuss, and while I love it, I hate the smell, so no smell either!! (I'm not sure what's worse, the smell of bacon or popcorn emanating from the microwave when you go to cook your next nutritious meal!)
Oh well, back to work! I must earn my Buck Three-Eighty (to quote my father!). Later folks.
Karen -
Janet, enjoy the pizza and the company today.
Also, Janet I am gonna make granmas recipe tonight. Do you think onions would work also on the franks? I hate to change the recipe.
Mildred Romano -
Patsy, what happened on Dancing with the Stars? Someone is not on anymore due to injury?
Mildred Romano -
Dear Millie,
If you want to get all gourmet and all, I guess you could put onions on the hot dogs. That would count as the vegetable serving for the day. Add ketchup and you have TWO vegetables in one meal.
Marilyn -
Thank you so very much Janet, I will try this gourmet meal tonight by candelight.
Mildred Romano -
Grandma's recipe for Blackened Bacon:
1. Heat up frying pan and put in bacon--no need to separate the strips--they will eventually do that themselves.
2. Fry bacon until the smoke alarm goes off and/or FDNY rings your bell.
3. Check for doneness--bacon should be the color and texture of charcoal.
4. Serve and enjoy.
Marilyn/Janet -
I will have to read and write down your blackened bacon later, it is still morning lol.
Mildred Romano -
janet, granny sounds like she loved to cook.
mildred romano -
Patsy, at the reunion you were showing me a picture. Could you scan it and send it to my emial: [email protected]
Mildred Romano -
Patsy, it was a nice picture.
I would like to see it again.
Mildred Romano -
Hey Marilyn: I remember a couple of times that Arlene tried a version of Grandma's bacon cooking style. It didn't matter what was being cooked, just put something in a pot and "multi-task".....like planting flowers in the yard. One time, Aunt Helen had fallen asleep on the toilet as the (whatever it was in the pot) started burning. The smoke detector went off and eventually woke up Aunt Helen who thought someone was ringing the door bell. I came into the smoke filling house to find Aunt Helen calling out "Who's there......who's there ?".
Modifications on the recipe:
- Change the item you are cooking (doesn't matter....burnt is burnt)
- Try a different thing to multi-task at, like digging in the compost pile
- Have Aunt Helen fall asleep in another room -
Bob, I like the mofification. Friday night, I am making a meal for friends and I have to try it. Would you like to come for dinner on Friday with Arlene?
