How safe do you feel?
I just moved to the area, from the very different California. I love my apartment, but I haven't been comfortable walking, especially by myself or at night. I know live at the edge of Prospect Heights (st marks & grand), but I just wanted to know how comfortable the people here felt in the area - especially females. Do you feel safe taking the subways/shuttle and walking home?

There are good blocks and bad blocks. St. MArks + Grand has some rowdy neighbors but it's not too bad. I know a ton of girls in the area, many of them from sheltered suburbs etc. and they all got over the goings on in the neighborhood.
If it's of any comfort the neighborhood is a lot better than it was almost 2 years ago when I first moved in. -
You have to be street wise. Know the bad streets. Know where not so great people hang out and don't go there. Know the streets that are more lit at night. Don't walk around listening to your ipod.
That been said it really depends on your comfort level. If you grew up in an environment like in the movie clueless it will be very hard for you to adapt. It can be done, but it will take a lot of work from you to adapt to your surroundings. -

OK, I gotta ask: isn't Grand in Crown Heights?
Overall, I feel pretty safe walking around (but I live by GAP). I'm sorry that you don't feel as safe. -
I also live on Saint Marks and Grand and I worry about my wife walking home at night. Fortunately I have a car and will pick her up at the train station after dark. I wish there were more taxis driving around on Flatbush by the train stations at night. It would be good for them to pick women up at night. Isn't there some service that does that for women? I remember hearing about it a few years ago. I think it was free.

shit does happen, and you need to be aware of your surroundings ...but there are not hoards of youths waiting to rape, rob and pillage while you walk home at 9 PM.
Granted, I am male ...but not a very big one. -
I lived on Carlton up until three years ago, but a good friend of mine still lives on Sterling and Washington. Because she was mugged about a year ago, I do always ask if she wants us to walk her home if she's leaving our place (in Park Slope) late at night. I also think that you'll feel a lot safer if know what you're doing. Don't walk around at night with headphones on, on your cel phone, etc. Know your surroundings.
I'm of the belief that anything can happen anywhere, but that there's steps we all can take every day to not be the target. -

No problem- I think they only do Friday and Saturday nights- prime drinking and stumbling home hours (guilty!).... -
Before moving a few months ago, I lived on Classon btw St Marks and Prospect Place for 2 years. My boyfriend got into a scuffle once in December 2007, but that said as a woman I never felt unsafe while we were there.
In any case, be as cautious as you would on any NYC street. The neighborhood is miles beyond what it used to be and will only get better with time. -
Shit i am more afraid of walking in L.A or Oakland than i could ever do here. But then again, people from California never walk always in their car, maybe that is paying a big role!!

Which streets specifically? I didn't grow up in Beverly Hills, but we always had cars, so walking around was never an issue. I would walking at night at home, but here I'm going to have to.

Right, i have lived on St marks since 83 with burnt out building, crack, guns and we were the whitest people on the block, i have never been mugged or harrassed in Prospect Heights, but people do sense others fears and that is when shit happens..

follow my #1 safety rule. walk home with a bottle of champagne. if you don't drink, no problem. pick your favorite sparkling juice bev that comes in a glass bottle and walk hom with that. anyone comes near you and gives you shit? clock them with it. regardiing where you live, if I were walking there from, say, the 2/3 at eastern parkway, I'd take washington to grand and then just walk there. if you're coming from the C that's a bit trickier - I might go all the way to prospect before getting on grand. otherwise that shit is deserted. and from the B/Q ... avoid prospect. don't walk that block between underhill and washington. sketch-o-rama.

oh, and, don't forget the whole walk with confidence thing. good posture and purposeful, undistracted Ino ipod, no cell) walking is a surefire way to look like you hardcore belong. you know when you walk into a bar or club with a strut like you own it? do that.
