  • HI ALL MY FAVORITE RIDE AT CONEY ISLAND WAS THE WONDER WHEEL (IT HAD TO BE A SWINGING CAGE THAT I RODE IN.) TO THIS DAY THAT RIDE WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAVORITE. I HAVE A 14K GOLD WONDER WHEEL CHARM ON MY CHARM BRACELET. WHAT WONDEFUL MEMORIES. I ALSO WENT ON THE PARACHUTE RIDE. I REMEMBER TOO, TAKING MY SHOES OFF AND LEAVING THEM AT THE BOTTOME OF THE RIDE.
  • SUNSET PARK POOL. GREAT TIMES THERE. I WAS ALWAYS A GOOD WIMMER. I WAS 1-13 YRS OLD AND DOVE IN THE 16? FOOT POOL. MY AUNTS WOULD WATCH ME DIVE OFF THE BOARD AND BE PRAYING THAT I WOULD COME UP SAFELY TO THE TOP OF THE WATER. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE LIFE GUARD AT THAT POOL BACK IN MAYBE 1966=67. VERY GOOD LOOKING LATINO MAN NAMED BAMBI? HE WAS THE REASON I WOULD SHOW OFF IN THE DEEP POOL? BOY, DID I HAVE A CRUSH ON HIM. HE WAS PROBABLY ABOUT 18-20 YEARS OLD.
  • OK CORRECTION ABOVE SWIMMER AND 11-13 YRS OLD. I TRY TO TYPE TOO FAST. LOL

I know some one who is in contact with Sally, so I will pass along any info you want me to (if any) Tell Dan if you want to give me any contact info to give Sally. I would love for him to come to a reunion, he lived directly across from me on 20th. Let me know.
  • TERRY - pretzel rods / sunset pool

Some of us were able to control our hunger and wait until we went across the st. for knish & cookies. I don't remember the pretzel rods.
But I do have a question considering you can do 6 donuts at one time. How many pretzel rods did you put down your bathing suit

    ok ok kidding

I was thinking how Mildred and I were going to make a stop to see the Sunset pool area, instead we tried to get some Spanish Take out food that Janet told us about but it was so jammed with traffic that we didn't stop at all. Now I have a craving.

Which brings me to what FRANNY BRUNO said about all the different types of food cooking in the bldg. The aroma. I was thinking thats what I loved also about the neighborhood, so many friends of different backgrounds.
Irish, Polish , Italian, Spanish. etc.
It is where I first had rice & beans at my girlfriends house and she showed me how the pot was burnt because it was even used from her grandma just for that meal only. I love so many foods due to growing up where I did. BUT !! the jelly donuts have to be very dark for me to love them. LOL
  • RAlph Suarato, Hi nice to hear from you. Sunday was really a very enjoyable day at Terry's. That was very nice of you to make the cd and yes we'll be home Saturday if you'd like to stop by. Here's my cell # 917 319 4701. Thanks Debbie.
  • OLD GOAT in FL (Warren)

You have so much info to add to this blog.

You said the magic word for me....... THE BRASS RING It was one of my favorite things to do & I couldn't wait to get to the carousel, so many years trying to get the dam ring. Every year I would get more & more brazen & lean over as far as I could. I could not take the thick leather belt off because they walked around checking. I DID FINALLY GET THE BRASS RING. Extra cotton candy for that one !!

  • This is Old Goat in Fl. Your stories about Sunset Park Pool brought back some good memories and some strange ones. I lived on 12th Street and we used to walk to Sunset Park and swim most of the day into the evening. On the way home, some of my strange friends would climb the fence of Greenwood Cemetary and take a dip in the big Lake. Not me I was Chicken. I was more afraid of the dead people then I was the night watchman who would belt you with a nightstick if he caught you. We also used to walk to Red Hook Pool. I know you may not believe this but on a dare one of my nutty friends dove into the Gowanus on the way home. How he lived through that I will never know!!!!
  • Hi Terry - wow 8 yrs. My mom will be gone 8 yrs. next July cause YOUR mom got lonely!! Funny - I can see them all up there now (my aunts too), sitting around the table, drinking coffee and talking, talking, talking... As for Jonathan, don't think about it as retirement money, think about it as a new vacation spot. Italy - one of my favorite places. Where in Italy? If you don't go visit him, I will!!

TGIF everyone. Even though my office is opened for Columbus Day and I don't have a long weekend, it's OK cause the weather will be beautiful. Indian Summer! YAY!!

Here's another memory. Charlotte Russes. I used to love them. Rip off the top and push up the cake and cream. YUM. I wonder if anyone makes them anymore? Cherry shoestring licorice.... Ebingers Black-Out Cake.... AAAHHH - all this food is bad for my hips!!

Better work - check back later. Enjoy the warm weather today!

    Karen
  • I LOVEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
EBINGERS BLACK OUT CAKE WHY WHY WHY DID YOU BRING THAT UP SO CRUEL

LICORICE/HOW ABOUT LICORICE ROUNDS WITH THE SUGER BEAD IN THE CENTER
    OR CREAM CICLES
  • Does anyone know where the Crosbys are, Sally, Charlotte and even though I know it, I can't remember it right now (the other sister) !!
  • It was Virginia Crosby !!! Had to go through the whole alphabet more than once, lol.
  • Anthony - sorry - didn't mean to be cruel! Love Creamcicles and I do remember the licorice w/the sugar in it. I don't like black licorice though - only chocolate twizzlers!!

Janet - last I knew all the Crosbys - Charlotte, Virginia, Sally and Joey - had relocated to either North or South Carolina - but I think it's North. Aren't you there in NC? Trying running a google search on them.
  • All the wonderful memories of Coney Island.... However, I still to this day never rode the cyclone (too chicken)....unless I forgot..I was teasing my sister the other day and asked if I was in a coma for a couple of years that no one ever told me about because I can't remember sh*&*..

Terry: I have lots of memories of your mom...but one in particular was at one of your cousin Diane's childrens' communion party and I was walking with my daughter (she had to be around 11 or 12) and your mother passed by and she looked at my daughter and said "Oh I know you. you are one of the Giordano girls" then I guess she caught herself and looked at me and realized she couldn't possibly be one of us and started to laugh and said "OH my God your daughter is your clone) Needless to say my daughter is now 26, 5'9" and gorgeous (too bad I can't get cloned to look like HER now).

Warren: It's great hearing all your memories. I had to laugh when you started on this blog. Your name "Old Goat". That is what my husband calls my mother lol lol. (I don't how my mother puts up with him)...

Well have to get back to work...this blog is addicting .

    Judy
  • I remember going to confession and trying to make up sins since I couldn't think of any good sins I committed to satisfy the priest. I good one was lying, lol.
  • Forget the Park Slope Cookbook for a moment......I need immediate cookbook assistance. Realized that I can't afford to eat out/ take out every day ! We are both so busy that neither one of us has been cooking for some time. So, please feel free to send me one of two of your favorite, healthy recipes to [email protected].

Months ago, I bought a really nice wok and a rice maker and both are still in the boxes !! Time to make a change.
  • Bob: Get a bunch of chicken breasts and season them with garlic powder, parsley, salt & pepper and drizzle them with olive oil and bake. Use them in salads, etc for the week.
Otherwise, make a batch of breaded chicken cutlets and do the same for the week, but you can add sauce & mozzarella a couple of times during the week, make sandwiches or cut up in a salad.
  • I got a crock pot more than 6 months ago and it is still in the box, so I understand.
If you finally use the rice cooker, add the baked chicken to it for a meal. Try various seasonings in the ricer.
  • As for Sunset Park pretzels, we were a little hungry after swimming, so we added mustard to the pretzels. When we left the pool, we went across the street to the corner candy store and got a treat. I always got the Pay Day, sweet and salty.
I remember seeing my first Puerto Rican guys there also and they were always saying "Linda" to us, lol.
  • Carol: I sent you 4 pictures from our tour of Brooklyn & Manhattan. I still have more of St. John's, church & school, as well as the neighborhood.
  • Marilyn: Thanks you for putting up with me for that long. I miss my 2 little girls, Olivia & Petunia.

There were a few stores as you described under the boardwalk. When we were with our parents they were off limits. Not sure if it is the ones you saw. There were other sights under the boardwalk that we were very much discouraged from watching! Listen to the song "Under The Boardwalk" and you will get the message. It was almost like two different Coney Island beaches. One by the water and one under the Boardwalk. My father loved playing the machines where you rolled the balls and tried to win a poker hand by getting the balls in the right holes. He was very good at it and used to win cigarettes by the carton.
