I think you're pretty safe walking around in our neighborhood, but if you venture downtown, you have to be more careful: a falling trader or banker could strike you at any time.

Mamacita, are we in a Nazi poice state? Seems like it when you removed everything! It seems that this board has no freedom of speech, just like people in Iran, North Korea, Russia, etc you know my point!

No, we don't have freedom of speech here. But it's HARDLY anything near Nazi-esque, and that's really trivializing and insulting to the people who suffered at the hands of the Nazis.
This is a private forum, owned by DailyHeights. The First Amendment applies to GOVERNMENT restrictions on people's speech. Private forums are allowed to set whatever rules they want about users' conduct. We are, in essence, having a big party in DailyHeights's living room. If he wants to make it a rule that people conduct themselves on his privately-owned website in a particular way, he has that right.
Mamacita was simply upholding the rules of the site. If you want to use this or any other private forum, you agree to abide by his rules. If you don't like the rules, nothing is stopping you from starting your own private website where you set the rules. -

Please. You probably have no idea how much volunteer time the mods and admins put in dealing with user complaints about/spats with other users via PM, deleting spam and banning spammer IP's, trying to keep topics in the right forums, dealing with trolls, and trying to get people to act like adults, or how completely shitty and useless the site would be without all of that work. This site has been thriving for years now with the same basic set of rules, and I think the sheer volume of discussions per day here and the site's longevity are pretty good evidence that the rules are no hindrance to exchanging information and ideas. They're only a hindrance to the very small minority of users who want to pick at each other endlessly. -
I got shot in the leg tonight leaving soda but made it home ok, no biggie, just another weekend out....welcome to brooklyn!

I've had mods overreact before. I think you guys need to be called out when the community thinks you are going overboard. That way, you will just get even better at making your decisions.
As for this post, I'll agree that PH is not yet to the level of gentrification and "safety" as say Park Slope or Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill. But having lived in those places, I know that even they are not immune to incidents of violence or crime. And, I wouldn't have bought my first home in PH if I thought it was "unsafe".
The tips given here are good ones. Keep your eyes open, head up and ears free of ipods or cell phones when walking at night. Walk with purpose like you own the place, because you deserve to be here as much as anyone. It also helps to make eye contact and smile or say hello to your neighbors. You'll soon realize that 99.99% of the people in your neighborhood are kind, friendly people. And knowing you are surrounded by good folk will just make you feel even safer. -
wanna see really strict, overbearing mods? Head on over to www.televisionwithoutpity.com's forums. Insane.
On topic: Don't use your cell phone when walking after dark, or headphones. If you feel exposed/vulnerable, walk in the street. If it's a dark sidewalk with trees and hidden nooks, I walk in the street. Trust your instincts. Know where the 24 hour places are near where you're walking in case you feel like you're in trouble.
Coming from a place where you relied mostly on cars, it's a change. Give yourself time to adjust and fake it until you make it. -
And, if you find that you are afraid all of the time, regardless of circumstances (for example, during the day and on blocks that most consider to be safe) you may have an issue that requires professional attention.
This is not a comment to the original poster ...this is a comment to people who read threads such as this and then are always afraid ...I would also advise them to avoid watching Fox 5 news, all it ever seems to cover is crimes.
The city is full of wonderful things to do, and is incredibly safe given its past, and other cities in the US (Detroit anyone? Camden? Baltimore? Newark? New Orleans).
You've made a good choice by living in Prospect Heights. ...but certainly isn't a gated community in Fairfax, Va. ...you've made a choice. -

This is so cool - I finally get to see Godwin's Law in action.
It states:
"As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."
Godwin's Law is often cited in online discussions as a deterrent against the use of arguments in the reductio ad Hitlerum form.
The rule does not make any statement whether any particular reference or comparison to Hitler or the Nazis might be appropriate, but only asserts that one arising is increasingly probable. It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact.

Non sequitur. He says there is too much rabid moderation. You say that he has no idea how much time is spent ... rabidly moderating? And this would counter his point how?

Sheer volume and longevity? Let say first off that I don't think this place is _bad_. But the Bush administration has been in place, what, 7.5 years? That is some longevity. And the sheer volume of crap that has come out of there, whew! I wouldn't say that those qualities necessarily make something _good_.apollonia666 wrote: They're only a hindrance to the very small minority of users who want to pick at each other endlessly.
Um, again, you'll note that he didn't complain about rules. He complained about rabid enforcement. Which I'm not saying I agree with, but I'm just saying. You've failed to address his point in any fashion.
Or am I picking endlessly?

Subject: WATCH YOUR BACK!
i was mugged in the entryway of my building last wednesday, 10/8, because the front door didn't shut completely/lock behind me, and someone who saw me going in caught it and followed me. this was at bedford and sterling, which is technically in the "known to be bad" crown heights region, but i've lived there for a year and never had any problems or been at all uncomfortable on the street. i just wanted to post a warning to everyone, because this is right on the border of ph and since he only got $2 off me he might migrate into statistically richer pastures--KNOW WHO'S BEHIND YOU! and always, ALWAYS make sure your doors close! the officers who took my statement after the incident told me that this kind of thing is happening more and more frequently as of late, so just be careful and be super-alert all the time. -
Glad you only lost $2, and I hope you are OK. Definitely make sure the doors are closed, I've seen posts more frequently about this sort of thing here lately too.
And I wouldn't call Bedford and Sterling a particularly bad area at all. FWIW. -
There are two ways to stay safe - here or anywhere. Most people have talked about the defensive methods - walk purposefully, don't be drunk, wearing your i-pod, texting your friend and opening your wallet to find your key. Make sure the door locks behind you and always escort delivery people out of your building.
The other method is offensive - and I mean as in football not as in my dog's breath. Talk to your neighbors. Wave to the regulars on the corner - even if they are regularly doing questionable things. (In the late 80's I lived on a far more questionable block than the one you are asking about and the drug dealers on my corner knew (1) I didn't buy from them and (2) that I didn't call the police about them and would always say hi and regularly wished me happy holidays. I am not kidding.)
Know the shopkeepers, know which shops are open late. If you walk along Eastern Parkway, wave at the doormen - especially the ones on the night shift who are desperate for anything that might keep them awake. Pet the neighborhood dogs (ask first) as their owners are often out on the streets late.
The vast, vast majority of us mean you no harm. -
Thanks to everyone for the advice. Glad to hear some good things and some, uh, not so good. I'm still open to more suggestions and stories!
Howdy, Stranger!
