  • TAS: Sure, bring up the guilty memories.....like when I took my son down Suicide Hill in Prospect Park and we had to walk all the way home with his broken arm. Then the ER forgot about us (no, not just the long wait, they forgot we were there).

Unfortunately, I didn't stop there (it seems). This summer, I convinced my son to go in-line skating (something I enjoy doing myself). He didn't get very far before slamming both legs into a park bench and was bruised and in pain for weeks.

It's OK in the end......he's a great guy and loves his father anyway.
  • GOOD AFTERNOON ALL. HOSE CLEANING AND DOING LAUNDRY. NO REST FOR THE WEARY, AS THE SAYING GOES.

HELLO ANTHONY OLIVA I E-MAILED YOU A FEW DAYS AGO. I AM STILL WAITING FOR A REPLY. (JAMSEY E-MAILED ME BACK RIGHT AWAY). I GUESS HE IS NOT AS BUSY AS YOU. I WILL E-MAIL YOU WITH AUNT CAROL'S CELL #. LOVE YA :)
  • CAN YOU BELIEVE I WROTE "HOSE CLEANING" INSTEAD OF HOUSE CLEANING. SOUNDS PERVERTED LOL
  • HI BOB HORAN I AGREE WITH YOU, SAUCE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE COMPLICATED TO TASTE REALLY GOOD. I ACTUALLY PREFER MARINARA SAUCE TO ANY MEAT SAUCE OR GRAVY AS SOME CALL IT. :) I LOVE WHITE CLAM SAUCE THE BEST WITH THIN SPAGHETTI.

Did somemone write this i dont remember. When u first went into steeplechase didn't we have to walk through a barrel turning and turning. I remember the clowns hitting u on your backside as you were riding on them.
With my balloon business I do alot of Sweet 16"s and I still buy my jelly apples, cotton candy, popcorn from the same guy we bought from inthe store inside near the train station. He moved to Staten Island now. It is the same lady and man that was there when we were kids. I was called Phillips.
I think next reunion we might try some of the above for old times. NOT the pink popcorn Marilyn. lol CONGRATS AGAIN MARILYN ON YOUR RETIREMENT AND BY THE WAY I KIND OF LIKE THAT SONG I KISSED A GIRL. I never really listened to the words but I like it. Love terry ann
Terry Ann your memory is excellent. At the gate you bought one of two tickets. They were for a different amount of punches. So many punches for 39cents and so many more for 69cents. You then went through the barrel you described and got whacked on the butt by the clown. Inside one ride or attraction might be two punches on your card, another three punches etc:. Nilda was right about the air hoses blowing up the girls dresses. When you came off the Steeplechase ride (the horses) your were forced out on a stage and on the way to the stage were the air hoses. The clowns had electric prods and when the girls came through holding their skirts the clowns would zap their hands and cause them to let go. People in the audience had to pay one punch to sit there. Needless to say it was full of dirty old men waiting for one of the girls who might have neglected to wear all their underware. I was not one of them. Too young at the time.
  • Old Goat: I think that the audience watching the clowns torture young people included some parents who didn't want to be shocked and beaten or have their nether regions exposed by a blast of air.

I didn't like the clowns because of the electric prods and to be perfectly honest, I have never liked clowns at any point in my life.

The rides were great at Steeplechase and I have some very fond memories of being there. Nevertheless, I wouldn't mind poking some clown in the ass with an electric prod some time. Hey, do you think we can arrange that for the next reunion ? As far as the air hoses, those should be at the entrance where people come into the reunion.
  • MILDRED you crack me up - "there were so many who had a crush
on me" At least Anthony knows he wasn't alone LOL

    STEEPLECHASE CONEY ISLAND
TERRY - You mentioned the Barrel turning as you walked through
NILDA - you mentioned the mirrors that made you look funny
you both reminded me of the best time as a kid in Coney.

Makes me want to visit the Coney Island Museum, some one told me there is a small one. Anyone know of it ?
  • BOB HORAN Did they really use an electric Prod ?
I would not like clowns either if I had that experience.

Was there ever a time that the horses were not there but the barrel remained ? I can't remember the horses but I know I went through the tunnel. Were the horses for adults ?
  • TERRY Hope you enjoy your visit. My son just got a load of the new addition to his room ( flat screen T.V. ) and thought it would be a great idea to bring it to his dorm & bring home the BIG monster T.V. They think Santa and the Easter Bunny grow with them into the college years
    Ha!

BEAUTIFUL DAY TODAY , This is my kind of weather.
Of course my son arrived late today so no South St. Seaport, better luck tomorrow.

I am afraid that when Steeplechase was on its final decline that the horses were one of the first things to be halted. Maintenance on them was probably quite expensive. Young children could not ride the Horses without an adult accompaning them. They accelerated quite quickly when you got outside and a fall could have been a disaster. The Barrels were probably one of the last things to go. By the way, there was a large barrel and a much smaller barrel. The speed of turning could be adjusted by the attendents. Some other things were the slides inside. One was called the pool table. You came down the slide and landed on a revolving tapered table. The trick was to try and stay on the longest without falling off. The regular slides were the forerunners of the splash slides you see in water parks.
  • Bob Horan

You just broke Emment Kelly's heart. The clown of clowns. I figure that the clowns with the prods were a cross between sadists and exhibitionists. People did get a kick out of it though and many people went back for seconds! I hope any future encounters with clowns will be more favorable for you. I never thought about the description you made of the audience. It has me thinking. I wonder if my parents ever sat out there when we went on the Horses????
  • Terry... If I'm not mistaken the line you're talking about comes from "The French Connection" with Gene Hackman.... I think. How's My nephew? Tell him to keep his pants on.Send him all our love.
  • Well Arlene is away for the weekend (at a horse training clinic) and tonight I made sauce (as per the recipe given to me on this blog).....and I shared my pasta with three dogs. The last part is not unusual, I find it hard to not share every meal with them. In fact, I wanted something sweet and all I could find was waffles. Two of the dogs just shared one with me.
  • Hey everbody , all this talk about Coney Island and the boardwalk Makes me feel like singing a song. Here goes:

Oh when the sun beats down and burns the tar up on the roof.
And your shoes get so hot, you wish your tired feet were fire-proof.
Under the boardwalk, down by the sea
on a blanket with my baby, is where I'll be.
    (Under the boardwalk)
    Out of the sun
    (Under the boardwalk)
Man, we'll be having some fun.
    (Under the boardwalk)
    People walking above.
    (Under the boardwalk)
We'll be falling in love under the boardwalk,
    Boardwalk.

From the parks you hear the happy sounds of the carousel,
and you can almost taste the hot -dogs and french fries they sell.
Under the boardwalk, down by the sea
on a blanket with my baby, is where I'll be.

    ( Under the boardwalk)
    Out of the sun

Man, we'll be having some fun.

Didn't that sound great? Twiggy that was a great idea you had. We should do more singing together. Maybe we could even play "Name that Tune". Somebody puts down a few words to a song First one to Name that tune gets a point. First one to get a certain amount of points wins. Say the prize could be FREE admission to the next reunion? What do you say Twiggy. I'll put you in charge. You're good at that.

  • DEBBIE - Under the broadwalk =D> and great idea also ! I think Christina would love that , Every now & then to throw that in.

JUDY - Great U tube clip. My mother -n-law says my husband was always tan even in the winter. Always outside playing GAMES.
I even think back & say to myself wow I used to roam around pretty young. There was so much to do it seemed.
  • namaste:

Judy: the u tube clip was great. growing up there was a johnny pump in front of my house and it was always on. Some neighbors would scream, "TURN IT OFF!!!!!!!!! I DON'T HAVE ANY WATER UP HERE" so we would have to turn it off for a while. The art of neighboring is almost lost, we here on 17th street still gather out side and the children do play outside. It's always fun to watch them interact.

WARREN (Old Goat) Steeple Chase: i remember large spinning disks on the floor, the object was to stay on them as long as possible, and AHHHH yes i remember the slide such wholesome fun.

well i must be off to finish dressing for church service.

    have a great weekend

  • BOB: "I'm going off the rails on a crazy train"
  • TH RIDE TO POUGHKEEPSIE WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! The only problem the traffic was bad took us 3 hours.
WELL!!!All the boys had their pants on due to all the parents having dinner. Boy can they eat when they are not paying for it. lol
The trees were so beautiful. I took some photos and as I did I said to Mike" How can anyone not believe in God with the beauty of our land." It was really and truly so beautiful, the colors were amazing along the thru way.
The boys were so thrilled showing off their house. I just looked at Mike and said OMG that smell is killing me, they thought they were french using the new GLADE candle probably hiding the beer smell from the night before. LOL AS MY MOM WOULD SAY I WAS NOT BORN YESTERDAY. All kidding aside what a great day I had spending time with my baby. Miss him already. DONT MISS THE MESSY ROOM AND LIGHTS ON ALL DAY AND THE FOOD BILL IS LESS LOL Anyway that was my day in case u were interested. Love Terry

    TWIGGY WHERE ARE U????
  • OK Ladies out there, the best Italian cooks in the world !!! As soon as I hit Brooklyn off the Verazano Bridge, I went to my all time favorite restaurant, RANDAZZO'S CLAM BAR. OMG, what a disappointment in the sauce, the medium sauce that it , that is served on shrimp, etc. Why they changed it is beyond me since most people love it.
My question is, how do I make a hot sauce for seafood? Not too hot. Their's tasted like they used a lot of tomato paste??? What do you use to make it hot? I really want to make a similar sauce. Thanks for any ideas.
  • JUST A REMINDER. AGNES FERRARA BROWN IS HAVING A FUND RAISER IN S.I. FOR HER SON WHO HAD GOTTEN HURT A FEW YEARS AGO. We had money left over So I am sending her the 100 dollars we had left as a donation in memory of Gay Coen, Johnn Oliva, Jean Oliva Gaeta, Denise Cresci's son, Franky Mush Manzione, Dee Dee Schiralli .
Twiggy did i get all the names if not email me. I am mailing her the money this week. THANK U TO ALL THE REUNION PEOPLE, THIS GIFT IS FROM U. She is trying to raise money I think for a van. She handed flyers out at the reunion. Love Terry
  • That is for a great cause Terry.
  • Janet... It was probably right out of a can. Nothings homemade anymore. I really am not that crazy for hot stuff, But a little chili powder or finely chopped hot cherry peppers may put a little jump in your sauce. Right now I'm holding in my hand "Franks Red Hot Extra Hot Cayenne Pepper Sauce". Says it's for anything. Can't hurt unless you have an ulcer! It comes in a narrow bottle about 6 or 7 inches tall. I put it in Bloody Marys.(better ask your brother Bob first.... Maybe it is harmful. lol)Good Luck.
P.S. I hate to cook, so I'm probably not your best source of information. Love Deb S.( Oh and I'm Irish and German)
