Yeah, DC is less glamorous than NY and Washington is not known for its fashion sense (to put it mildly). Dc's "National" opera can't match the Met. No matter, for now they get to enjoy a bit of schadenfreude...

Read the article. It isn't saying DC is better than NY or that NY sucks in any way. It is saying that the financial crisis has hit some well-to-do New Yorkers hard. Which it has.

Though I don't particularly like the tone of the article, I can only imagine how hard it is to write an article about rich folks having to cut back on their excesses and keep it from sounding negative/disdainful.

I will agree that it is an unfortunate (and misleading) headline - that's really the only thing in the article even remotely approaching a dis of NY.

The article doesn't make sense. Rich corporations all over the world are cutting back and losing money they make it sound like NYC is Ground Zero for the economic melt down.
