ipod + ubuntu assistrance?

what's the file structure of an ipod, namely a shuffle. when I plug it in to ubuntu, it's showing as an external drive and I can copy things to it but they don't play. do I really have to plug it in to someone's windows or mac machine first just to get the stupid thing set up and figure out where the pretteh music gos? and. before you ask, I have used google which has helped me solve several ubuntu issues but this one, for some reason, is baffling me (and driving me batshit insane).

(and no, I don't have a windows or mac machine of my own right now so blah)

  • oh, and I've DL'd some 3rd party software (two kinds) neither of which will launch. blargh.
  • I haven't the slightest, hon, sowwy. I'll ask big D when he gets here...
  • You need to use itunes to sync it or it wont play.

You can load files on it the way (of any type) you did and use it as a protable flash drive, but it will not play them.

oh that is just so proprietary and irritating. however, WHATever. it's getting obvi that I need to revive windows. the world is EVIL. even my stupid ebook reader works with linux. maybe I need to figure out how to hack the stupid DB of itunes?

    (but thanks for your help)

thanks. I'm getting very agitated between the noise on the subway and the fucker not working!
  • oh good god, I'm going to scream. gnupod has support for ipod shuffles. BUT iit has no front end and I don't know perl so I can't figure out how the fuck to make it work.

I love ubuntu but I feel like I'm in an endlessly horrible college class that I'm always "this close" to failing. blargh.

Are you certain that there isn't a linux app that will do this?

I could easily bleive there is not.

    Hence the value of PCs.

As much as people trumpter macs, jobs, iEverything, they are only locked down source code yuppie toys.
  • The guy I asked said to use gtkpod or yamipod. Are either of those ones you have tried?

neither will load, which leads me to believe there is a fundamental problem with this stupid laptop. so, now I need to sit down with a linux guru, partly to help me make this fucking work and partly to get my eeepc running ubuntu and not the stupid version of linux it runs now. rhythmbox is supposed to work but it's farting, too. so whatever virus killed my windoze I think also did something f'd. or I dropped this shit twice. thanks for asking your buddy, though. I have a feeling I'm going to be harassing doctorj for an assist at this point. I want to run solely open source code and I KNOW there's a solution to this problem. either that, or I have to buy some crap toshiba so I can make it work. good thing I don't have a job.

(oh, and thanks for the lift last night - I had a great time hanging with you, WYW and others)
  • Native gtkpod or yamipod or one of the others does look like the way to go. If that doesn't do it, then there's the option of running windows itunes under wine.

If your frustration exceeds your patience, I'd be happy to spend an afternoon trying to make it work for you.

I frankly can't afford a mac right now and these are machines I already have so not while I plan to buy a mac soon, I just can't right now.

and supposedly there are ways to make this work. I'm just not smart enough to figure out the hardware and software issues on my own. usually the ubuntu forums are pretty clear but right now I feel flat out stupid. so it is totally time for me to harass my expert friends!

but, thanks again for your assistance.
