  • MILDRED,

I think it is wonderful that your son is doing this project for your family. Wow, 700 photos. I'll tell you, these kids are so computer saavy. God bless them. Does he want to move in with me for a while and get my photos in order? I'll cook up a storm for him!

Too bad I did not know about Anthony. I would have given him the tapes. Does he have a website? Enjoy your day, Mildred. Nice chatting with you.
  • Twiggy, I have his card at home, I will send it to you later.
Ralph T, are you reading this, would you give this information to Twiggy? She is asking for your brothers website.

  • It was a cool but not cold Sunday. I was playing with my cousin on the stoop of their apartment house on 13th Street. A family friend came up the steps and said "the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor". I was 8 years old. Did not know what Pearl Harbor was nor much about Japanese. A few minutes later my Aunt came out and told me to go home right away. So started the saga of WW2. 12/7/1941. The next 5 years we all lived in a different world. Friends & relatives were called to serve in the Armed Forces. Some never came back. One of your regular bloggers lost an Uncle in the battle of the bulge. Prospect Park became an armed camp. An artillary unit stationed there with Anti-Aircraft guns on lookout mountain. We had Air Raid drills at night. Mr Walker the appointed Air Raid Warden came running around after the sirens blew telling us to put out all our lights till the all clear. Sometimes huge suqadrons of planes flew over on their way to England. The Brooklyn Navy Yard became off limits escept for workers. My oldest brother worked there after school and weekends. Rationing of food & fuel went into effect. I still have my ration book! Meat was a difficult commodity to get. Most was being shipped to the GI's overseas. There was a definite shortage of men between 18-40 since they either were drafted or joined up. We had neighborhood scrap metal drives with each street trying to outdo the other. The metal was piled in the middle of an intersection like 12th St & 6th Aves on pickup day. Imagine that with today's traffic! Savings Stamps & Bonds were the patriotic things to buy. Getting a little long. Will continue next time.....
  • Hey Cuz C: Sorry about the double information, lol. Well, not really !! I have to get myself one of those coffee pots soon. I am just tired and may take a nap and get up and watch HEROS. Talk to you later.

  • WARREN, I READ YOUR STORY AND FELT LIKE I WAS ALMOST THERE.
YOU WROTE THAT SO PROFOUNDLY. GOD BLESS YOU:) GLAD YOU ARE ON THIS BLOG. SAY HI TO ALL IN FLA.
  • Hi Warren .... You have a wonderful memory. I know it's my Uncle Herbie that your talking about who died in the Battle of the Bulge. He was only 18 years old. He died before I was born but everyone of us know him from so many stories that the family told. In fact I'm looking at a picture of him right now in his uniform along with other old photos that I have displayed. What a good looking guy he was and such a tragedy that he lost his life so young. I feel like I know him and I'm so glad that you did. Talk to you again. Your stories read like a book. Bye, Debbie.
  • Here you go ...A guy is throwing in his 2 cents:

Anthony, a couple of days ago you were talking about Troop 321. I was in that Troop around '73/'74. John Barrett from 6th ave and 20th joined the Boy Scouts just so we could see what a forest looked like. We did it just to go camping and see something more besides concrete and pavement. We did 3-4 trips even one during a snow storm. Once the novelty wore of we were done. I believe John Barrett still lives on 20th St. up closer to 7th for a very long time now.

Twiggy, I was good friends with your Cousin Michelle. I was in a talent show with her one year. She did a duet with my cousin Gina Puglisi and I did a duet with John Barrett. We were all in the same grade and classes for about 7 years. We sang Neil Diamond. Lots of fun, that was Park Slope's version of American Idol without a arrogant engish bastard telling us we sucked. Though we were all damn good. Was James your cousin as well? I spent a lot of time with her and my cousin Gina, in fact I have a picture somewhere here in Ohio of Michelle and Gina on stage.
  • Uncle Jerry...how are you? I bet you won't miss the winters in VT. How is my lovely Aunt treating you? Give her my love. How is my cousin Janet? She is the last one in the great white north. I've been out here 5 1/2 years now...life is good. I could be getting close to another change in geography though.

700 miles away but I feel that I am right back there. I need to hear all this back and forth from you all...good stuff.
  • Does anybody remeber a neighborhodd celebrity named Frankie Barcelona? He used to make his way along 6th Ave every Sunday night after dinner. He would sing to all of us hanging out and then tell us that he had to go because he was going to be on the Ed Sullivan Show that night He always wore a fedora hat and would also impersonate Jimmy Durante...Ha Cha Cha Cha.
Shit the 80's were good to me but I can still dust off the memory banks for this stuff. I would never remeber these things if it were not for this page...Thank you all for bringing me back home....Thank You.
  • HI ARNOLD

DO YOU REMEMBER WHO THE TROOP LEADER WAS

    ANTHONY U.
  • One more: Speaking of Neighborhood entertainment. does anyone remember a guy we all loved to call RA RA? Poor guy could not talk and we all made fun of him because he always wore pointy shoes (cock roach killers). He would walk up 21st towards Greenwood and we would just start yelling at him RA RA RA RA until he got all pissed off and chased us. We would run our asses off until we could get into a vestibule and lock him out. We would be so afraid of him, he was so damn fast in those friggin shoes. Once we got behind a locked door we would talk junk once again and wait until he left...Not raised to be polictically correct we were mean spirited if you think about it...

I know that if you were there you were laughing with me, shame on you!!!
  • Hey Anthony... I suffer from CRS..Can't Remeber Shit... I can't remember at the moment. I forgot much of that until I started logging on this page. Maybe it will come back to me.

I think my mother was telling me you knew my brothers Johnny and Tommy. They are younger than me by 4 years I am 45. They are younger but I still have the black hair...and NO cousin Ralphie it is not dyed...
  • Does anybody remember riding skate boards down 21st. Sitting two at a time on them and trying not to run into cars? That hill seemed realy big at that time.

  • Positive 1: I am not sure, but john Barrett may be in Florida with his brother Pat and his father. I saw his mother Tina when I was up for the reunion. She is still on 20th near 7th.

Hello Warren, You would make a great History teacher, better then the books !!
My father-n-law served in WWII 101st Paratrooper. Jumped from the plane in pitch darkness !! Normandy-D-Day. His wife told us stories like the ones you mentioned. She said ALL the men were basically gone. Those were her teenage years.
They both said there is no other time like then, the way America pulled together. THANKS FOR ALL YOU OFFER TO THIS SITE
