Millie D. wrote: OMG, Anthony Umbria, that is what I was going to say. You start with sauce, I would never open a can of sauce and put it on my macaroni.
Millie, Millie, Millie you have to brown your onions, garlic and meat 1st...then add your sauce, seasoning & sugar ...lol....then watch it for hrs all the time stirring and giving it all your love & time.... thats what makes it gravy......(big smile)

Thanks Carol. Always nice to be appreciated. Later today I hope to be able to enter names and addresses of people I graduated from Manual with in 1951. I have selected names from Prospect Ave through the mid twenties. Those are the streets most of you seem to be from. It will be interesting to see if any of you find relatives from the "Older" generation..
You need to come on each day ..... to make MY day.
I have to be honest I'm not to sure I would like a Bean sandwich.
mmmmmm add a few thinly sliced hot dogs and you just might have a cooking show ! -
Hi Warren.....keep the stories coming!

I TOLD HER TO BE HONEST AND TURN IT IN BEFORE THE METAL DETECTORS GO OFF TODAY. I HOPE THEY ARE THERE JUST FOR TODAY. THESE KIDS NEED CELL PHONES TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH US PARENTS

Ahh I remember it like it was yesterday. My mother Rosie saying to my father...... "Frankie, I'm going to church, don't forget to stir the GRAVY". And Terry is right, you dipped the Italian bread in the GRAVY. After awhilke you would just buy 2 loaves, one for dipping and one for the dinner.

Hi All.... Just readng about comfort foods that we've all loved. Warren mentioned beans on bread... My grandmother used to eat white bread with smashed bananas. Plain tomatoes with mayo on white was always good. One friend of mine used to put butter on white bread and sprinkle sugar on it. He said his mother would make that for him because they couldn't afford cake. I guess our grandmothers all thought up inexpensive ways to feed large families when there wasn't enough money. Funny though, today they're called luxuries or a delicacy! Thank God for Grandmothers!!!!! Love Debbie S.

Hi Sue,
I am glad that I was able to be there. I believe things happen for a reason & that is why our paths have crossed. You’re smart & intuitive. You have always known who had tried to help.
Unfortunately, some people by nature can be so cruel, mean and insensitive. However, there are those who are loving & caring. My favorite song is: “a time for letting go” Tina Turner.
It is always great to go home even if it is for a short term. I live in NE Pa & travel more than I am home. This weekend we closed the pool & cleaned the furniture. Summer is now officially over. However, I will be in Cancun in 3 weeks with my 7 month old grand daughter. After 4 sons a granddaughter is a wonderful gift. :0)
I went to Saint John’s & hung out throughout the slope including 17th street to 22 nd street & 7 th avenue, I frequented Charlie Browns, Snookies , Union Street after hour clubs etc……… Any questions ask away. How is Franny & Johnny?
I have a presentation in an hour so time to get focused. Stay in touch.
Have a great & exciting Day -
GOOD MORNING ALL -
Have some Site reading 'catching-up' to do. Sounds like there are some pictures and tributes to garages... I never could see Donnie's tribute
but it sounds like that was discussed. I will go back tonight and read what I missed recently.
Still recovering from last night's wedding. It was at the Tribecca Roof Top - the cocktail hour was outside on roof; while sunny - froze our butts off. And the actual wedding party was in the penthouse loft. The views of the city were magnficent... as we all know it is a beautiful view. The view of the Holldand Tunnel, had much to be desired.
Anyhow...... the real reason I am writing is GRAVY VS. SAUCE.... and had to add my two cents.... I know this topic comes up over and over again..
We always called in gravy and as we know - gravy bread with that extra loaf of bread (Tony knows). Terry and I always shared this fond memory; and we've all eaten meatballs immediately after frying (and eat too many).
Now this was told to me by a former student, an Irishman who was married to an Italian (one of those). It made much sense to me:
Back during the war (Warren??) when things were tough, people/Italians
made sauce. It sounds like what we call Marinara sauce (no meat, etc.).
When there was money in the budget - pork, beef, bones, the kitchen sink,
everything was added - and that made it gravy. So when there was gravy on the table, the family knew things were 'good' that week financially.
(Having said that, we didn't have any $$ but always had gravy every Sunday.)
This gravy/sauce thing can also be territorial, regional, whatever you want to call it. One of my first bosess who lived in NJ and was Italian, and he would always tell me it is not gravy, it is sauce. So????
Ok that is my two cents. For what it is worth.
Take care my friends!!! Catch up with you along the way! -
Regarding RECIPES:
I see lots of good ones going on... and will cut-and-paste what I see recently posted. But if you have them in a word file or on an email,
please send to me [email protected]
And if you posted something back a while ago, please send so I don't
miss anything. I know Grandma Horan's hot dog recipe is somewhere back on the Site (Christina, I have yours). Hi Dan... see your peppers  Carole and Patsy I know I saw great ideas from you two.
(Not meaning to exclude anyone or not acknowledge if you posted.)
And don't forget if it is a family member's recipe, or yours, add some
words around it so that it can be a specific tribute to that person, place,
time.... whatever. Or a fond memory of how grandma taught you how TO MAKE THE GRAVY!!!!
Now I really have to go......
God Bless Your Day! -
HI FRANNY
DO YOU STILL LIVE ON 20STREET?
DID YOU KNOW THE PAOLUCCI'S
ANTHONY U. -
Gravy, schmavy..... "You like tomaaaatoes and I like tomah-toes" but " A rose by any other name would still be a rose". I'm hungry! Debbie S.
-
Hi Anthony -
I left 20th St. in 1975 when I got married. Paolucci sounds very familiar (I lived right below 5th Ave., next to the laundramatt.) Where did they live and what were kids names?
I may be thinking about Calucci (I remember Rocky Calucci, the neighborhood bookie; and he had a brother). Rocky was a grey-haired distinguished looking gentleman - probably a hero of our generation and that time. -
HELLO
NO IT WAS PAOLUCCI SAL PAOLUCCI HIS SON JOEY
THE MOTHER IS MARY SHE IS THE BROTHER OF RED FROM THE DELI ON 5 AVE THE OTHER BROTHER OWNED THE LIQUIOR STORE ON 20/5 AVE -
All this talk of food - sauce, gravy, chicken soup, etc. - has made me hungry. I ate my lunch! I made lentil soup yesterday which I love. I'll freeze some and eat some during the week. At least I won't have to cook when I get home.
Terry - welcome back!
Warren - no stories today???
It's Monday afternoon already - the day is going fast. Running to an appointment. Catch ya later.
Howdy, Stranger!
