horrid situation a friend is going through
a "friend" of mine has her mother staying with her. she has been under extreme amounts of stress. one of her favorite stress relief activities involve something that is perhaps battery operated. unfortunately, said machinery is in her bedroom where she and her mother are sharing a big bed for a bit.
no. this doesn't mean something nasty.
this friend of mine, however, may become a suicide risk. my pal is hanging out on the sofa watching DVRd tv while her mom is snoozing. sadly, the machinery is still in the bedroom and, frankly, she thinks it'd be weird to smuggle something out of the room solely to use it outside of her room. which means her sofa and living room are clean. she's still irritated and stressed.
anyone have any advice for her, especially something that could assist her with stress relief the way she is quite adept at handling?
my friend is so SICK of dealing with this terribly debilitating issue.
thanks!
(p.s. look at my friend funny and die)

is the suicide risk separate from the mother/ lack of destressing activities?
That is, are those two things aggravating factors to an underlying problem?
How long-term is the mother's stay?
Depending on that perhaps your friend could buy mom tickets to a broadway show, a movie, a bus tour, a hockey game, a museum, pawn her off on a friend for an afternoon, etc if at all possible.
Alternately, perhaps your friend could obtain alternative and less conspicuous stress relieving devices -
The shower! Privacy, noise elimination, all that.

Well, abstaining is good for your Kung Fu skillz. At least you'll be able to really kick some ass while she's there. :rambo:

...this blogger always gets concerned when he reads of suicidal thoughts.
If they were not written in jest, I encourage you to get professional assistance. If you are already getting assistance, I encourage you to let the professional know that more assistance is needed.
PM me if you seek more advice. I work in the field of mental health as an LCSW-R. -
You know....there's always the old-fashioned way. Your friend has hands, right? Those come in handy when the goin' gets tough!

thanks for all the advice. my friend was only joking about the suicidal thoughts. insane is a better word. luckily, lots of people already think she's insane so it all works out.

friend doesn't have one of those. once resorted to one in a hotel room - she described it as "that guy that craps out JUST BEFORE the situation becomes awesome." tragic. -

Tell your "friend" to get an electric toothbrush with "cool" attachments and leave it out and about. Tell mom that it is used to clean the grout with so she should just leave it alone -
I second the shower idea. Also, there's nothing wrong with "personal massagers."

...can't say I have anything more to contribute.
Enjoy yourselves, literally.... -
She should buy one for her Mom , the family that vibrates together ,stays together

I agree with the bathroom idea. It's the only other room in the house with a door , right? Tell your friend to turn on the tv in the living room , and let the shower run while she does her thing. Then she can hop in the shower afterwards. She should kick her buddy out before she showers though just in case mom wakes up while her daughter is in the shower or getting out of the shower. I don't know-something like that.

Kick your mom out of your house. Reminder to self : keep on living alone and no extended house guests.
-
Tell your friend to turn off the TrueBlood and take a brisk walk around the block...
-
Why does she have to kick her mom out? I mean, mom's gonna get all paranoid, "Why do you want me to leave???"
Go to the bathroom, hop in shower, take care of bidness, and your good for one whole day! -
I don't understand why she doesnt just go out and find a guy?! find someone who has his own place and she will have much more fun then any electrical device. Additionaly she might get her mind stimulated as well.

Um...have you seen the guys around? Pickin's is slim. -
oh, yah, just go out and find a guy.
1) it's not that easy. Ditto what Anastasia just said - married, committed, gay, emotionally unavailable, etc. etc. etc. Especially once you get in your 30s+
2) just because you have a man doesn't mean you still don't want your "alone time". -
Boy...was I off the mark!

Yeah if anyone figures out how to find a decent, attractive, intelligent guy with a job in NYC who is attracted to women (and/or women over 30), please let me know. I find my boyfriends in other cities/countries (then they don't get underfoot)! ;-)

i just make sure my mom's taken out the hearing aid before firing up the gigantor sonassage with heat and speed controls [highly recommended], whenever i visit...which she understands is essential for soothing my overexerted muscles. if she were to visit me, i would expect her to habituate without question -- nor excuse -- to my 'habits.' as i must to her g.i. issues. seriously, it's yer home!! also, if you have a dog, allowing her/him to hang out with mom in bed is a good distraction.
also. i can't vouch for the dearth of suitable suitors, being homo and in the mental health field, where the straight men are few and...nevermind.
btw, the situ is not any better for thirty-plus-plus dykes. hence said ac devices. -
