  • Old Goat here. Can a guy slip in a story between all you gals????

    BROOKLYN DODGERS---EBBETS FIELD

The glory days of Brooklyn starring "Dem Bums". On most Sunday mornings we had to attend both Sunday School (9:30am) and Church (11:00am) But if the Dodgers were playing a doubleheader (Yes in those days you got to see two games for the price of one) I was allowed to go to Sunday School, come right home afterwards, pick up a bag of sandwiched my Mother made for me and head off to Ebbets Field. I would walk up 12th Stree to PPW and then down to the 9th St entrance to the park, cut diagonally across the Park and come out near the Botanical gardens. Cross Eastern Pkwy and head to Ebbets Field. On the way there you would pass people setting up the roasted peanut stands etc:. I would head for the Bleacher Entrance on Bedford Ave(Which opened at noon), pay my 50cents for a ticket (later increased to 60 cents with much furor by the bleacher fans), went into the Bleachers and picked out a seat. The games were not allowed to start before 1:00pm. The Churches were quite adament about that. So we would watch batting and fielding practice before the games began. The bleachers were a great seat in the upper center field stands. With ny big mouth I could yell loud enough for the second base umpire to hear me. The games would not end until about 7-7:30pm. Almost 8 hours of entertainment for 50 cents. As I got older we would splurge and buy reserved seats between the bases. My Mother was an avid Dodger fan also. Sometimes we would buy tickets for a day-night double header and the whole family would meet at the park right after work. And yes, my mother would bring a whole bag of sandwiches for us to eat. I saw them all. Dixie Walker, Roy Campenella, Pete Reiser, Pee Wee Reese, Gil Hodges, Gil Snider, Carl Furillo, Jackie Robinson, Leo Durocher, Eddie Stanky, Carl Erskine, Don Newcomb etc:, etc:,. And for the opposition Stan Musial, Robin Roberts, Ducky medwick, the list is too long. My Mother passed away in 1954 and don't you think it did not hurt to see the Dodgers win their first world series in 1955 She would have been thrilled. Then in 1957 (while I was in the Army protecting your Gold in Ft Knox), that no good *#@% Walter O'Mallley moved the Dodgers to LA. Weird town, sushi village, white wine instead of Beer & Hot dogs. No more Hilda Chester ringing her cow bell, no more Dodger Symphony playing three blind mice for the umpires and seating opposing players after a strike out with fan fare. A piece of Brooklyn died in 1957 and Ebbets field became Ebbets Field Apartments with nothing more then a plaque on the building to signify that Baseball history took place on the sacred spot!!!
  • Janet - No - Don't laugh at me but I just went on photobucket this morning and put in "cats" and picked the first picture I came to just to see if I could cut and paste. They are beautful aren't they....Judy
  • My neighbor came over here to ask for wire cutters since his dog had it's leg wrapped in her wire leash and it was almost amputating it. I called my son and luckily we had tools for him to remove it. I panicked and called the FD but canceled it after the owner got her free. Now he has to wait and see fi there was permanent damage.
  • Judy Giordano-Banjany: Yes, they were gorgeous cats, lol. I have 2 as ell as 2 dogs.

Hi Mildred, did you have a good birthday?? Where did you go??
Al (Elliot) is very sick with respiratory problems and he needs tosee the doctor TODAY !!

Have a great day (Im too lazy to get a picture).....Judy
  • Oh oh - I became a regular! Guess I'm spending more time blogging than working!!!

Warren - my father was a Dodger fan also and became a Met fan after the Dodgers went to the left coast. My Uncle Charlie was a sanitation man and his claim to fame was that he picked up Gil Hodges garbage! I had the dubious honor of visiting the Ebbets Field houses when my father was mugged and went to local precinct (the 77th if I remember right) to report it (they stole his car too!). I went to get him and he told me all about the great Ebbets Field and the Dodgers!

    Keep those stories coming.

I must get back to work!
  • Hi Judy ....thats fine ...whatever makes you happy!

Terry - how's your granddaughter's rash today? I have my Granddaughter with me also...thats why I couldnt post till she took a nap....lol ...you guys are so funny! :bounce:

  • OH Old Goat in FL-Warren: I loved the dodgers so much as a kid and still claim to be a Dodger fan. The only time I don't root for them is when they play the Mets. I stay neutral since I like both teams. I could never like the Yankees since you were either a Yankee Fan or a Dodger Fan when I was little. But after moving to WNC,I had to become a Yankee Fan since they love Atlanta here and went up against the Yankees a few times, lol. I used to tell them "why don't you get a better team, not those lousy Braves?"

When I was 5 and 6, I remember taking the bus that ran up 17th and then Prospect Ave to Ebbets Field. It was so exciting. I think it was the 77 bus?? One time we actually saw all the Dodgers in another bus next to us. I became a huge Sandy Koufax fan and he was the subject of my first high school speech. It was really weird for a girl to be an avid baseball fan then in John Jay HS and I felt strange since the other female were giving speeches about cooking, dancing, etc. Oh well !!
It took me years to meet Sandy Koufax which I finally did at an autograph signing when I was about 30. When I got up there I blabbered out that I was always a fan of his and wrote my first speech about him, and his attitude was "NEXT" !!! Well, could you believe this was the man I grew up planning to marry, LMAO, LOL.
  • Hi: Just checking after a long spell. What happened to this site? Getting very limited (and political, I might add.) Gay marriage? (lol) Seems like more of a coffee klatch now. Feel like I'm intruding. Where is everyone else? What happened to all the old neighborhood talk? I miss it. Anyone else feel the same?
  • Extra: Sandy Koufax broke my heart earlier on when he married Richard Witmark's daughter, wahhhhhhhhhhhhh. So, I also wanted to marry James Cagney not realizing how old he was. I always thought at that time that he was as young as he was in his old movies !!!!
  • JANET,

  • Barbara Spencer: Many of the first bloggers are having a hard time with this new blog site and cannot or do not come on. When we run out of stories to tell or do not have one at the time, we just chit chat to stay connected. We also give each other computer lessons. It would be totally empty if we waited for someone to post a story or memory.
So, we chat in the meantime, lol.
The picture was just a joke, not political, and at the time being overtired, I put it up, and regretted it later, lol.
  • HEY BARBARA,
Some of us are still here. It is everyone who was at the reunion except old goat and he is preeeeetttttttty interesting to me. Who cares if some of this is a chat room at least we are all still keeping touch once in awhile...SO WHAT'S UP OLD FRIEND. Love Terry
  • JANET,
what photo is barbara taLKING ABOUT THE OBAma kissing I thought it was great. terry
  • Terry: I worry sometimes that you are doing too much and that's why I said that you have to wind down. Believe me, I know that vacations can be strenuous and you need a vacation after a vacation, lol. Also, there was Donny on everyone's mind, so I just worried about you.

Hi Janet: I figured it was meant to be funny. A little disturbing though (lol). Honestly, I don't like either one of them. I guess it's a matter of voting for the lesser of two evils. Anyway, I'm trying to think of some new stories about the old neighborhood to post, but I know you're right, most has already been said. Like you, just wanted to keep in touch. Thanks.
  • janet,
u are too sweet. I am doing alot lately. The baby is such a good kid but it is alot to do during the day, diapers, feeding, reading and watching sesame street and barney.

  • I love cruises by the way and have been on at least 6. If I win the lottery, I will take the whole blog on a cruise to Europe. We will have extra security on board by the way, lol. Sooooooooooo, I know that you do so much on the ship and try to fit as much in as possible and eat constantly, so it is exhausting, he he he.
  • Terry: Just don't try to change his diaper, lol.
  • Barbara: I am just going to have to jot down notes during the day when a memory hits me so I can post it on the blog. I should be cleaning the house tight now, but can't stop blogging, lol. And you're right, I don't like either candidates. I wanted Hillary but do not believe in my heart that she is backing Obama. Just party pressure.
  • OK,
I remember an old story if u were in the brownies with me, marilyn, the drittos.
    MRS. TAYLOR WOULD ALWAYS SING
I have something in my pocket that belongs across my face

I know u are wondering what it is
It is a GREAT BIG BROWNIE SMILE.
I think I screwed up the last two lines. lol
AND AT THE END OF BROWNIES WE WOULD SING
Day is done and fold our arms in front of us
