Brooklyn-style bird street-fighting... — Brooklynian

Brooklyn-style bird street-fighting...

Saw something cool this morning while walking the boy to the bus...

We're on Underhill near Lincoln heading toward Eastern Parkway when this hawk and pigeon come ripping right in front of us locked in airborne combat. They go crashing into a parked car where they become disentangled and fly off in the separate directions.

Made me think of this:

  • we saw this in the park over the weekend. bad ass.
  • That was great. Love brooklyn boids!
  • Awesome airwar action!

There are many red tailed hawks living in and around Prospect Park. They are always on the prowl for rats, squirrels, pigeons, or whatever small birds they can catch. You can often see them wheeling above the rooftops, looking for food. Last Sunday at PPW I saw a hawk dive bomb into a bunch of pigeons right in front of me, but he failed to make contact.

I once saw a big hawk at Grand Army Plaza near St Johns, plucking a fat pigeon on a tree branch. Tufts of feathers floating down drew my eye to the kill. Two agitated mockingbirds were dive bombing the hawk, pecking and plucking its back feathers with loud ratchety alarm calls. The hawk mostly ignored the pesky birds as it pulled feathers from the dead pigeon's breast with its beak. If the mockingbirds scored a painful hit the hawk would fluff up and sidestep the branch a little. Eventually the hawk tired of the harassment and took off, the prey hanging from its talons, the angry mockingbirds in hot pursuit.
  • that's amazing. it sounds like the mockingbirds were taking up for the pigeon. i suppose the more likely story is the mockingbirds had a nest nearby.

i once watched a red-tailed hawk swoop down and snap up a pigeon in front of the library, take it up in one of the trees facing eastern parkway, hold the live squirming bird in its talons and pluck the feathers off before taking off with it.
  • by "pigeon", do you mean fixed-gear cyclist riding against traffic?

and by "mockingbird", you mean double-parked mercedes?

then i've seen this wildlife phenomenon before
  • I might add that in addition to our local population, there are many more hawks passing through the area now due to the protracted fall migration. Some of them might not be as "streetwise" as our local hawks and not know how to deal with the tough Brooklyn pigeons, as demonstrated by the street fighting incident described above.
