I can't say it better than Andrew Sullivan:
McCain's Concession
It was very classy, very moving, and finally worthy of the man we once thought we knew. Alas, his crowd was as ugly as he was gracious. I fear what will now become of the GOP.

I think that was about Biden - they were talking about the VP residence on Massachusetts Ave. But yeah, that was a weird thing to say. -
What's everyones take on FDR's first 100 days?
Roosevelt entered office at a time when fear and panic had paralyzed the nation. In a famous passage, historian Arthur Schlesinger described the mood at FDR's inauguration: "It was now a matter of seeing whether a representative democracy could conquer economic collapse. It was a matter of staving off violence -- even, some though -- revolution."
FDR's natural air of confidence and optimism did much to reassure the nation. His inauguration on March 4 occurred literally in the middle of a terrifying bank panic -- hence the backdrop for his famous words: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." The very next day, to prevent a run on banks, he declared a "bank holiday," closing all banks indefinitely until bankers and government could regain control of the situation. The term "holiday" was meant to give a festive air to what was actually a desperate situation, but such was FDR's desire to provide hope to the nation. -

Largely irrelevant (apart from senate filibustering from the remaining social/ultra/neo/conservatives and theocrats) for a while, I suspect, until they completely reinvent themselves. Once you rule out gays, women, the young, blacks, hispanics, Asians, Jews, Moslems, immigrants, the working class, people with higher education, and non-evangelical fiscal conservatives, there's not much of a constituency or elected body of Real Americans(TM) left to carry much weight. One sign to look for: when Murdoch (via Fox) gets on board with the center-right of the new administration and abandons the loony rump of the GOP to the wilderness. -
People in my building were hollering out of their windows , "YEAH OBAMA!!"
Some people were shooting their guns. People were outside yelling and beeping horns. It sounded like New Years out there.

Hell yeah , Mamacita! Obama is hott. :safe:
I'll let his wife keep him though. He's too skinny for my taste.
Lets just hope he really is a blessing , cuz that's what his name means.
Obama!! Yeeeeeeeeeah , Baby! -

Agreed. The GOP did McCain no favors. Hopefully, although I doubt it, the more moderate wing of the GOP will force out the hard core right and make the GOP a more palatable political machine to moderate Dems and GOP'ers alike. That whole Palin/Maverick/Obama is a Radical/Shake Up Washington thing was a shill and a joke, and I'm sorry McCain has to exit his last Presidential run on that note. Obama stayed on point. He spoke on the issues. He won fair and square. Hopefully, if the Dems won their anti-filibusters he will guide this nation to some sanity, security and prosperity. IMO, Obama is calm an rational enough to let everyone to share the olive branch but strong enough to conk someone over the head with it if they get out of hand. -

Agreed. But the tone of his speech last night did ring a bit hollow after the kind of campaign he ran.
I saw this comment on reddit this morning:Fuck you, John McCain.
You sent me a dozen pieces of hate-mail, calling Obama a terrorist, and doing your best to paint Obama not simply as a man you disagree with politically, but as the anti-christ.
You tried to start a civil war.
You spent an order of magnitude more telling me why Obama is a dangerous evil guy than you did telling me what it is you stand for.... though to be fair, you seem to have forgot that yourself in the space between 2000 and 2008.
You're an asshole and a loser. I'd say "you'll go down in history as a loser" but that isn't true. You aren't important enough to go down in history as anything but the answer to a trivia question, for whose ass was kicked by Barack Obama.
Fuck you for breaking your promise to stay positive.
Fuck you for lowering the level of political discourse even further.
Fuck you for ruining all the things that I liked about you in 2000.
You're an asshole, and I'm glad you lost.
Now fuck off. -

eh, I have trouble thinking worse/better of a candidate re: their campaign and how it was conducted. politics is dirty. I thought obama sounded like a soulless preacher the entire campaign - but I'll give the fuck a chance. heck, his infomercial had me laughing hysterically. giant pile of horseshit.
in any case, actions speak louder than words: mccain and obama both voted for FISA which is completely unforgivable. obama was, for me, the lesser of two evils, as usual in prez politics. -
I never get sick of this one:
-
You guys said what I was thinking and much more eloquently. McCain ran his campaign the same way so many other republican presidential candidates did. It's like a script they follow and it's old and laughable now. I'm glad it didn't work this time and I hope more people are as tired of it as I am.
alafairnadia, that's the way I've always looked at elections (the lesser of 2 evils). But in this case I'm hopeful that things will be different. -

A couple weeks ago, I saw a blog post elsewhere from someone who wrote down what they wished McCain would finally say -- an all-out rant at the hard-core supporters for not recognizing how his message had been altered by the hardcore religious right, for not recognizing that the ideals of the GOP had been compromised, for not recognizing that he had been made a puppet of some ill-minded people, and for not recognizing that his running mate was a complete idiot. This fantasy rant then concluded with a lecture to these constituents for behaving in such a way and giving in to such a message that they made it NECESSARY for him to alter himself just to get their vote and that they really, really needed to take a good hard look in the mirror at what they had become. And this fantasy rant ended with, "I'm John McCain, and FINALLY, I now REALLY approve this message."

Ron Paul, maybe? -
Definitely. He's the only one that comes to mind.

which just proves most politicians are, in essence, asshats.

Too right. The Federation of Irish Scouts Associations is nothing but a front for training young terrorists. -

are you trying to say that the IRA are terrorists? they're FREEDOM FIGHTERS! god. how often do I need to defend that portion of my mother's people with bad accents? I much prefer the scots, but that's just cause I secretly tape them.
