burning down the house @ bklyn museum — Brooklynian

burning down the house @ bklyn museum

if you haven't seen this, go. it's awesome. as you know, I'm a HUGE fan of the feminist art collection in the museum and go as often as possible. it's always a big hippie cry fest for me in that, well, feminist way.

in any case, I wandered this latest exhibit and was just blown away. wonderful photog, fantastic e-art, short films, etc. great paintings. but really? what made me almost tip over the edge of sob fest, again was this original guerrilla girls poster re: the advantages of being a female artist. as you can imagine, there are none in their poster. hilarious and tragic. and fabulous. so go! support the brooklyn museum and the feminist art wing!

  • Cool.

I've been here 2 years and live so damn close to that place ,
walk by all the time , and still haven't went in. #-o

    Maybe soon.

    Thanks for the info. :)
  • I too was blown away last month when I went, but I haven't seen the recent additions.

I had poo-poo'ed "The Dinner Party" by Judy Chicago, thinking it was just going to be cute & trite (for shame). But when I finally saw the work, and the way it is set up in the museum.... speechless. Not to mention the other works shown in that wing. Very very deep stuff, and thank you for reminding me that I have to go back.

Go see it and that means you Em26!!!
  • Em26, I was the same way! Been here since April 06, 2 blocks from the museum, and didn't visit until the Murakami exhibit! (Intended to visit for Ron Mueck but ran out of time). This sounds good though, will definitely check it out.
  • You guys need to take advantage of this institution. This is a solid museum which in the past few years has shown some terrific shows. The Gilbert and George show right now is worth seeing as well as the others mentioned. Also price wise I believe it's only six or seven "suggested" dollars. And Target sponsors the first Saturday of each month with djs and live music with beer and wine and it's free (not the libations).

same here! (re: the dinner party) when I finally saw it I think I broke down halfway through it. it is so gorgeous and so lovingly done. I feel so close to other women just by being in that room. it reminds me how much people have had to sacrifice for me to be who I am and why I can be both uncertain yet certain that I know how to run my life properly. it's one of the few places in the world, frankly, where I feel comfortable saying things like "I'm doing blah because I'm a woman, and dammit, this is what women SHOULD do!"

I saw the Iranian woman's pieces (or is she Iraqui? like the "-guay" countries, I get mixed up with the four letter "I*" countries) several months ago with a friend of mine, another woman who went to wellesley, and we were both sitting there in tears after the art (which was mindblowing) and then discussing how much shit the hill was getting that was clearly a misogynist attack. and hey, what better place to feel that vulnerable - a home for the power of women?

yay! I'm going to miss brooklyn but will be back often to visit. I love it here.
