Charity Suggestions — Brooklynian

Charity Suggestions

Our office usually has a gift grab bag with a $25 limit per person but this year we thought we would do something on the charitable side. There are a few sites that were suggested such as Donorschoose.org which donates money to buy items that teachers need for their classrooms and another where you donate a pair of pajamas and a book. I do like those ideas but am looking for more suggestions. Even though I make plenty of monetary contributions throughout the year, I am skeptical of places where you donate money and feel it would be more satisfying participating in an event by looking for someplace we can (35 of us) either donate our time (the day of our office party) or an organization where we make sure our gifts are distributed. I know there are tons of them out there but just not sure where to begin. Any suggestions???

  • the last two years i have made donations to heifer project as christmas gifts.

    www.heifer.org

    check it out
  • What about Toys for Tots? There are plenty of drop off boxes this time of year, or you can go directly to one of their offices.

I did it one year with a group and it was a big success.
  • OK, I'll put a plug in for Baby Buggy. They are a great group that will take and use both your gifts and time. They definitely do corporate groups as volunteer blocks, and would probably love to have you. You would want to speak to Jasmin Rosario ( [email protected] ) she is great and could probably help you out with setting something up at either your place or theirs if you are interested.
  • call New York Cares and ask them if they can give you a project to work on as a team
  • NYCares is cool and worth a try, but I believe they want a $5k corporate commitment before developing personalized projects. Certainly worth a call, though. Incidentally, I found Baby Buggy through NYCares.

Which reminds me, at All-Saints on the Upper East side they have a pretty special meal service program called Monday Night Hospitality (or something like that) which will take a team that size as well. You could probably call the church and ask for a contact, or I'm sure that I can dig out some contact info if you are interested.
  • Go to your neighborhood school, religous center, community center and work it out.
Most of these bigger non-profits, not all, are paying the wrong peoples bills.

Besides, there is nothing better than the personal satisfaction of getting involved and seeing you charity at work.
  • Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I think we are going to work with either Lighthouse or The Jewish Guild for the Blind.
  • i have to throw in my vote for donors choose. it is a very cool group, and you can choose a school in your area.
  • Our office participates in NY Cares Winter Wishes for Kids. They collect letters to Santa written by area children from homeless shelters, community centers, etc. I've done it for a number of years and saved all the Santa letters. Some really just about break your heart. And I've gotten requests for everything from a bicycle to WWW action figures. It's a great program.
  • Lighthouse International DEFINITELY!!!!!!!!!!! I can personally guarantee that the donation will go to a good place.
