do you live near the subway? (I don't live there, so I don't know if your street is near the subway)
is there construction going on near you? sometimes they have those huge metal plates and when cars/trucks run over them it makes a big rumbling sound -
Thanks for the reply. It's def not that. It's sounds like airplanes..or low rumbling thunder. It's def neither. Someone has got to help me out here. Anyone?

Fireworks is a possibility I hear them pretty frequently near where I live.
-
I live right by this intersection, too. I haven't heard this low rumbling, though. This might be because none of my windows face the street, or because our radiators are noisy as hell.
-
I bet you live on the first floor. Do you know if you have an oil fired furnace?
-
Thanks everyone. No Furnace, and no first floor. It def seems like it's in the distance...But I am going to investigate the furnace thing. That is the best clue yet. It seems people could hear it for blocks.

I think there is a school that has some sort of percussion meet. I thought It was fireworks as well but on a clear quiet night we figured it out. Band and/or percussion.

I feel your pain. When we first moved into our house we had a small entertainment unit we plance in the front room of our house between the two front windows. We would hear a noise throughout the night when we would watch tv. After going nuts for a couple of days we realized that every time a car passed by the shelf holding the VCR would rattle.
We also realized that terra cotta plants on our windowsill would rattle a bit when cars passed too fast on Underhill.
Does it seem to happen when cars are passing? Do you have a manhole cover outside your home. Maybe its loose and when a car goes over it it makes a rumble noise for a few seconds? -
Wow...As all these seem like valid responses...I can tell you that none seem to sound as you are describing. Respectfully.
I am going to investigate burner downstairs. That might be the ticket. Hard to tell. Keep your ears open for a low rumbling noise...sounds like constant airplanes far away, constant firework noises.
Thanks to all!

is your elevator dying? Serious mechanical problem would cause it...

Aliens? Could be the aliens.
-
true, we forgot to explore the alien connection. ...ditto, the intake of drugs. Jimmer, are you a drug user?
Have you been abducted by aliens? -

I'd go with the alien explanation as we have them around here quite frequently although they tend to quite down a bit in the colder weather.
