park place : a safe place?

Hello,
I've seen a nice flat in park plca with the intersection of nostr.avenue.
I can't visit the flat as I'm in Europe. Is it safe and quiet at night? Is it really far away from Lincoln center? Should I avoid some part or subways at night?
Are they nice delis, supermarkets around?

    Lincoln Center in Manhattan?? I'd say that's about a 45min train ride at the least. I'd have to say it's not a great street in general and especially that far out it's definitely NOT going to be quiet. I wouldn't say it's dangerous but I know there was a shooting near there about a week ago... If you're going to be on Park Place, you want to be near Carlton, Vanderbilt or even Underhill Ave. That's more in the neighborhood of Prospect Heights which is really up and coming right now.

    Yeah, but if you're looking for cheap rent, ya ain't gonna find it on Underhill or Carlton or Vanderbilt. I live on Park b/w Classon and Franklin. Three years, and I just signed up for my fourth. Close to the subways, and pretty quiet at night, except for the summertime, when nothing's quiet in New York City.

    I actually live on Park Place, bet. Nostrand and NY Ave. I own a townhouse and have lived here for almost 4 years.
    Yes, it's probably 45 minutes to Lincoln Center (on a bad day)
    It's a very quiet block, mostly homeowners, with considerable improvement in the past 4-5 years. (I've worked in the area since 1987). The corner of Nostrand and Park takes some getting use to, ie, there's a tendency for some street folks to hang out there, but believe me there have been no shootings on the block. There was one on Carleton and Bergen however a couple of months ago.....
    Regarding restaurants, there are a few within 5-6 blocks, such as Tavern on Nostrand, Bagels and High Tea (both at Nostrand and Union, about 7 blocks), Exposures, (Bedford and St. Marks, about 4 blocks) plus tons of West Indian, some of which if is great. For necessities, you've got Rite Aid about four blocks away. Re food shopping, I'm a member of the Park Slope Food Coop, so I don't shop locally much, but the Met Food at St. Johns Place is OK for small shopping needs.

    Well, it helps a lot, thanks! It's also nice to talk with people who live there.However, I'm a bit worried. Should I avoid some blocks in crown heights? Which subway is the safest at night?
    Well, I would appreciate todiscover the neighbourhood with you;I would be in New york the 17 th of february.

    I would suggest just exercising normal caution but be aware that this is not a "white" n'hood. It takes so time to aclimate, so don't panic if you don't fell right at home the first week or month.

    I too live on Park Place btw Nostrand & NY (hey neighbor!! :D ), although from the sounds of it I live closer to Nostrand than Greg does. I think it depends which side of Nostrand you are refering to. I'm east of Nostrand just a couple of houses in from the corner. Our block is fairly quite with the bulk of the block being brownstone and limestone houses (mostly owner occupied from the looks of things) with four apartment buildings on one corner of Nostrand.

    West of Nostrand that block is almost all multi-family apartment buildings and an elementary school. The block is not nearly as nice, and while I don't think there is more crime there, it could take some getting used to, especially if you are not familiar with the neigborhood. The school means lots of kids on the block from about 7:30 in the morning on, and more hanging out at or near the corner of Nostrand by pre-teens and teens during the afterschool hours. If you are working a 9-5 I don't think it matters to much, but it may be important if you have a job where you are home during the day or coming and going when kids are entering or leaving school.

    Having lived in Bed-Stuy most of my life, I see the neighborhood making some pretty predictable changes. If you live on a street that is mostly owner occupied housing its usually pretty quiet. Streets that are bounded by commercial avenues tend to have more activity than those bounded by residential blocks. Violent crime tends to not cluster, but to be fairly random around the neighborhood. Drug activity is just the opposite and tends to be clustered around particular venues.

    I'd encourage you to come and take a look at the neighborhood if you are going to be in the city. It is not a short commute to Lincoln Center, but you can definitely rent cheaper here than you would be able to almost anywhere in Manhattan or in downtown Brooklyn. Not to mention there are a bunch of subways close by so you have a lot of options in terms of travel.

    Heard that it went defunct a few years ago, as a result of the disasterous block party in 04 and the fire in the apts that forced the relocation of several people who where running it. I'd love to be involved as much as I can. DSL at home is down, but as soon as its working again I'll pm you with my contact info.

    I finally moved to PH near franklin avenue and eastern parkway...since saturday. I'm trying to figure out where to shop, to eat...
