Honest reasonable computer person needed

Need a recommendation for a good computer repair person.I want to add some memory to my desktop and the quotes from the yellow pages have been crazy. Or does it cost tween $150 to $250 to install?

Comments

  • Adding RAM is definitely something you can do yourself, and it is dirt cheap if you buy from a place like Newegg. There are many, many tutorials out there that can guide you through it.

Also, 150-250 is a retarded amount to install ram if it isn't including the cost of the ram, and even if it is, that better be a crap load of ram. It should take all of 5 minutes to do.
  • i can vouch for that price.
I used to charge $120. The difference is, I made house calls. Some of these people/places make you bring your rig to their store and sitll charge you that price

I admit, for something so stupid its expensive. However, that is the going rate and it all comes down to you needing someone to do it.

But if you think we are bad, plumbers are worse! Costs ya $75 just for them to walk in the door! :) And if you see him do some of the work, you start to think "I could have done that!"

It's very similar to PC work.

Anything over $150 is a ripoff though.

FYI - If you hit craigslist, be VERY careful. You might find someone offering $50, but these people are sketchy
  • Installing RAM is pretty easy. I'd look it up on the internet and see if it's something you feel comfortable doing.
  • If they are actually coming to your house, the $150 price sounds more reasonable, but you should really consider doing it yourself. But then again, I'm also the kind of guy who changes my own oil, replaces my own brakes, etc ...
  • AVOID the geeksquad and firedog!
  • Thanks for your responses.I guess I will continue to search. I would try to install it myself but my vision is failing me. Those quotes were for me to take the unit to them and the 150 quote didnt include the memory. I currently have 256 and want to upgrade to 1g I checked the price of memory and it varies.I dont know what I should be looking for in terms of memory but the prices range from 19.99 to over 130.00 dollars so confusing.
  • thanks for the newegg link....they have pretty good prices compared to what i was finding.
  • do me a favor
post the statistics of your computer

some ram might not be compatible. Let me help you out a bit.
I'm assuming you are running windows XP ... but if you have a mac, I am of no use.

256 is VERY low. How old is the comp? The motherboard in it might not be able to even handle the new memory out there
  • $150 to $250 to install the RAM, $130 for the RAM, to get you up to 1GB.
Or, $299 for a brand new much faster computer with 2GB (e.g. Dell's lowest model).
  • My specs are processor....amd centron 3000......60 gb harddrive.....256 memory.....expandable to 1gb.It is a compaq presario desktop purchased in January 2005.
  • Oh yes I have xp.
  • Sounds like the SR1300NX. In that case, this should be fine:

All of $30 plus a few bucks for shipping

4 years is pretty good going (3 is ok, 5 is outstanding). I'd be considering replacement not upgrade.
  • that is exactly the model. thanks. my boyfriend bought it for me for valentines day.the next year i was given a laptop which i use all the time so the desktop is used primarily by my sis when she visits and to store photos of my niece who is now 2 yrs old and to print.i think when i add memory it will work just fine. it is just slow now. other than that the sound and graphics are great.
  • yeah.

give it a try yourself. For $30, what can do wrong ;)

Seriously though, since its not your primary comp, pop it open and look at the memory in there.

Undock it (should be 2 small levers on each side and pull it out.

Then put it back in. Great practice and you should be more confident! :)
