Help Me Choose a Big, Fat TV
Comments

come on, people...gimme some help!
-
you people are too slow. I bought one. :-)
-
make up your mind.
do you want help or not? -
No, I did want help and I posted a bunch of links to different TVs, but I erased them because I made up my mind.
The money has already come out of my bank account, so I guess I'm in now :-) -
gotcha
-
Missed it. Actually something I kind of know about. What'd you get?
-
this one:

please don't make me doubt my decision :-)
I don't need bells + whistles - I don't play video games and don't have a sophisticated stereo to hook it up to or anything -
now, if you can point me to some inexpensive HDMI cables (to my Time Warner box), that would be great
-
HDMI cables are usually $20-$30, haven't seen them for any less.
I would have recommended this TV

I like the plasma pictures better. But you got one 4" bigger for $100 less and negligible difference in picture quality, so I'd say it was a good purchase.
Need someone to help you watch it? -
No doubts - great TV, good job Flexi. I would have said this one, Sony or Panasonic.
I dunno, I tried HDMI and had all sorts of buggy problems with sound so I just use the regular rca jack cables - TWC will give them to you with your digital box. If you do decide to go HDMI, just get the lower end cables from tigerdirect or monoprice. No need to get the fancy schmancy gold ones - you won't notice a difference.
You don't play video games? I'm shocked. -
Yay! I think Toshiba was a good value for the price. I saw some nice Sonys too, but they were a lot more expensive. I went to J+R and saw a lot of the Toshibas and they all looked pretty good
HDMI cables online are like $2. Tiger is where I bought the TV from and they tried to sell me $30 cables. No thanks.
I only know old school games. I have enough vices without getting a Wii or something -

Try monoprice - you could get something like this and if you hate HDMI it won't be a financial setback.
Edit to provide the right damn link. -
That's not HDMI. That's SVGA....but thanks

This is what I meant. -
Wrong again. THIS is what you want. Sorry!

thanks. that looks right

And you know of course that you need to also get a Tivo S3 to fully take advantage of that big boy. Rewind in HD. It's a beautiful thing.

Don't even tempt me. I was looking at them earlier. One big ticket item at a time. -
The cheapest place I've ever found an HDMI cable, not counting on-line, is the Apple store. While you can debate the prices of their other items, the prices on their HDMI beats anything at Best Buy or Circuit City. Sorry to say I can't recall what I paid (it was a year ago), but I remember being pleasantly surprised.
Just a thought if you're in Manhattan and don't feel like waiting for an on-line retailer to ship to you. -

I agree with this. I bought the same thing for my HDTV and they work great.

It's coming.....tomorrow....
so, it's coming via truck. Do I need to tip the delivery guy(s)? how much?
I live on the first floor - they just have to bring it up the stoop steps -
I wouldn't tip unless they are a regular delivery person for you. Unless you want to be kind then give 'em 5 or 10 bucks. Or unless they are hot. Then tip. A lot.

Congrats on getting your TV! I am such an electronics nerd, I can't sleep before the delivery of a major appliance. -
And I hope you haven't opened the floodgate for yet another endless tipping discussion. Flexi, you know better than that!
-

I've been tracking it since I ordered....from Chicago to Ohio, to Queens....

They are not a regular delivery person by any means. -
Just do whatever makes you comfortable. Most people wouldn't tip for something like that, especially since you're on the first floor. But hell, I tip my Fresh Direct guys every week even though it's a different guy every week. In a situation like that, I don't normally tip unless they do something extraordinary.
-
I tipped 5 bucks each to the guys who brought my couch. Granted, I'm on the 2nd floor of a walk up and they really had to work really hard to maneuver it in the door.
-
Party at Flexi's tomorrow! I'll bring the french onion dip!
Howdy, Stranger!
