greek language - looking for someone to help me learn

My bestfriend and partner was adopted out of Greece at a very young
age. We have found and reunited her with her family approximately 8
years ago. We have purchased every Cd learning tapes available and
she has learned quite a bit going to visit every year however was hoping
to find someone who might be able to do a one on one speaking session
perhaps once a week or so - are there any greeks out there willing to
do this and what fee would you ask for such sessions? Am in the park
slope 16th street area. Thank you for any input.

Maybe start hanging out in Astoria? I'm sure you could find people to talk to for free.

You're right about that, but too far to schlep unless you're going shopping!
I get to talk a bit in some of the local greek coffee shops for free to,
just can't really get all that much from the usual banter!
I figure if there is someone out there, this is the place to find them!

There's a Hellenic elementary school on 5th avenue and 19th street. http://hccs-nys.org/ You may be able to find a Greek speaking teacher willing to make a few extra bucks.

Post back if you find someone. I'm planning a trip to Greece in the spring and may be interested in a few private lessons after I finish the CDs I just bought.

Thanks Lemur, I'm actually waiting to hear back from one of our restaurant
connections concerning the teachers in that school! Appreciate the link.
The Cd's are great for the general tourist things and getting by which
are what almost all of these programs offer. There are only a very few
that give you more than that. I'm still searching. Again, appreciate the
time and the link.

check meetup.com and see if they have Greek language groups. I used to go to the Spanish speaking/learners group all the time...meetings were free and at local bars/restaurants ....had speakers of all levels - from beginners to native speakers. There were also teachers/tutors in the group

the boys at the usual on vanderbilt (mike and johnny) speak greek and are super-friendly. i bet they could find someone for you to work with -- might even do it themselves if you came in at non-rush time.
