Saw a glimmer of something as I passed on the B45 last night. Anyone know what's up there?

  • My girlfriend forwarded me a press release re: a new cafe in Prospect Heights. It's called Ortine. I'm pretty sure it's the place you are referring to.

    2) Prospect Heights: Former Schiller’s/Pastis manager Sarah Peck and her husband will open Ortine this week according to NYMag. They write: “Sarah Peck, a former Schiller’s and Pastis manager, oversees the herb garden, the kitchen, and the eclectic menu (everything from Belgian waffles to braised short ribs). Her husband, Steve Guidi, an acupuncturist by day, acts as the restaurant’s beverage director and thus is in charge of the kombucha and the egg creams. Steve’s mom, Barbara, is the pizza and lasagne maven, and if the bulk of the menu skews Italian, blame it on her.” Status: Not Open. Opening Wednesday midday. 622 Washington Avenue, Prospect Heights; 718-622-0026. [NYM]

  • Wow..

    The menu looks great.

    I am so hungry.

  • I stopped in today because I read about their homemade Kombucha in NYMag... and I live right around the corner. It's really cute and the Kombucha is good! Served in mason jars and only 3 bucks. The owners are really nice too. I can't wait to try the food.
  • thank goodness they are open on Monday. Will totally check it out this coming week.
  • I went here this morning and loved the place! Great menu, friendly service, nice renovation. Even though it's not in my immediate area, I'll definitely be back. I'm sure that they'll do well, given the lack of cafe options on that corner.
  • Just got back from Ortine.. highly recommended. Had waffle with fruit and a homemade sausage patty. They were also serving up what looked like a really nice vegan bean chili, pizzas and frittatas. On the walk from St. Marks also noticed quite a bit of new construction around Washington.. who is going to pay big money for these places??
  • The menu looks great. I can't wait to try it.

I do wish they hadn't gone with H&H bagels though. They could do so much better.
  • The place is nice, but there's no f'n way I'm drinking Kombucha.

  • Subject: Great Food

We went to Ortine last night. The food was great and the owners are really nice. Try the mushroom lasagna, it was amazing. Wine prices are very reasonable. Can't wait to go back to try the lunch menu.
  • wait, I love h&h bagels. great central park trip with out of towners: stop at h&h, buy a dozen and some cream cheese, sit in the park and eat til you pass out. what I don´t get is why a whiskey bar has them (or any other bagel, really), or did I miss something?
  • Uh, its NOT a whiskey bar, darlin', its a new restaurant on Washington. Hard to keep track of stuff going on thousands of miles away, huh?

totally. clicked the wrong post. I am a giant spaz!

but, as such, yay H&H bagels in PH. now I don´t have to buy a freakin´ dozen uptown so I can have one with cream cheese. do they toast them? apparently that´s against H&H policy.
  • Went to Ortine last night for dinner. Had stopped in twice for coffee and tea to try them out. Good food, coffee and tea. Washington needs more places like these. They have Wi-fi and definitely seem receptive to people with laptops who just want to surf the web with some coffee or tea.

H&H bagels are too damned sweet. There's not supposed to be sugar in bagel dough. The only reason H&H ever got popular is because their original store was the closest bagel place to Zabar's.

And too big. And sometimes to fluffy. Bagels are supposed to be dense. I like Bagel Hole on 7th.

Bagel Hole is the best. The mini bagels at Terrace Bagels are a close second.
  • I once had a huge argument over Terrace v. Bagel Hole - while eating one of each for brunch.

I didn't realize that Terrace did mini bagels. My main complaint of their normal bagels being the size, I'll have to check that out. Could overcome my main complaint about Bagel Hole which is that they sometimes undercook their bagels.
  • Got to go back and try dinner again. I got the roast chicken a few weeks ago and it was undercooked, and not crispy at all. Maybe it was a fluke. My friend's shortribs were pretty good. They were all out of the mushroom lasagna.
  • Hey y'all. The Prospect Park Brunch Club went to Ortine a week ago; it was EXCELLENT. We have a vegan member and they were more than accommodating for her. They were also able to seat our party of 8 quickly and were happy to do so. Everything we had tasted great, the service was spectacular, and I absolutely love the atmosphere. It's adorable!
