What are your favorite yoga classes/places in the Slope? Would appreciate specifics on places (what you like about it) and specific teachers?

I am experienced, and don't mind a rigorous class, but am not looking for Bikram (hot) yoga classes.

Thanks in advance :D

My daughter takes a great kids' class at Jaya Yoga on 8th Ave. and Windsor Place. It is a small, very friendly and welcoming place. Overall a pleasant environment -- worth a shot at least.

full disclosure: my friends run this place:
    http://www.yogasanacenter.com/

it's a great space, they have classes for all levels{including Self-Practice for the more advanced students}, and special workshops for pregnant women/osteo/posture, etc...

they have many teachers with their own specialties -- they practice Lyengar yoga

best thing to do is to drop in, get a feel for the place and ask any questions. and the prices are reasonable.

  • I like Jaya too. I've taken classes with Sarah and Carla and I like them both. Sarah's class is more of a flow class, focused on the breath and your mental state, while Carla is more alignment-oriented. I have not tried the other teachers there. Jaya is a very cozy, friendly studio. I took some classes at Park Slope Yoga on Union Street years ago -- the teachers were fine but the vibe was too hip and competitive for my tastes. Jaya is much more low-key.

I would also highly recommend Jonathan FitzGordon's classes at Yoga Center of Brooklyn -- not in Park Slope but a quick trip on the F train to the corner of Smith and 9th. Not a flow class at all -- he is very knowledgable about anatomy and very good at correcting your alignment. He's an Anusara teacher but also has a lot of experience with Iyengar yoga -- he really knows his stuff.
  • Thanks for the tips.

I've been to Jaya before, and like it. Just haven't been in a while.

I've also heard great things about Jonathan's class.
  • Alison Dorfman teaches at a few places in Park Slope and Manhattan, and she's completely worth following. Maybe Google for her schedule?
  • Just a warning to people on this forum, my friend tore her meniscus in a bikram's class and apparently it happens alot in hot yoga classes according to her research. they push you beyond what your body wants to do, and the heat suppresses your body's normal warnings.
