HELP ASAP: Cat Found

I just came home to find a cat at my door, literally at my door. I know next to nothing about cats but I know that this cat is not feral--it did not run away from me and appreciated the tuna and water I put out for it; my cat-literate friend got me going with a make-shift litter box. My cat-literate friend also told me that unless someone claims the cat, the cat fetchers will come fetch the cat tomorrow and then put it down in a few days. I don't want that but cannot take the cat in as I am truly allergic. If you are game to take in the cat, if the cat actually belongs to you, or would like to put it up for a few nights until an owner can be found, please get in touch.     Update: The cat is now in my apartment. I am attempting to restrain my allergies from overcoming my goodwill.

    Subject: what you need to do ...

    Thanks Barnable for helping out.

    #1. In describing a cat (c'mon... you can't be totally clueless about this...did you *really* find a cat?? :) sorry but... ) you write coloring, size(pounds if that helps), color eyes, fur - short or long (like siamese), etc. Any distinctive markings (missing fur on back, white patch on neck, etc.). The cat is friendly it sounds like.

    #2. You write a mild description and you put flyers up nearby "found cat." Also in pet stores, etc. Now some people say not to write TOO much so that the person HAS to describe the animal - because there are some nefarious people in the world. You leave your phone # on the flyer.

    #3. You do not bring to the AC&C (or ASPCA), the city shelter. You must give this a few days. You are being a great help to this animal by helping out!

    #4. Casepeole usually checks this board and would have great advice if she's not too overwhelmed!

    #5. Post elsewhere other than here...

    Funny to think I have never described a cat before in my life. Anyhooo...here goes. I did actually find the cat at my doorstep. I know, its sound crazy. It is slim. It is black and gray striped, kind of like a tiger (sorry cat folks, the best I could come up with). It has white paws and a big chunk of white fur underneath his mouth, like a bib. And it has brown greenish eyes. It is super friendly and keeps rubbing up against my legs. Hey, if I was not not allergic to cats, I would consider taking it in but my eyes and nose vetoed that thought. Gonna put up some signs.     I posted this in the pets forum long ago. Please contact them and place the cat in a good foster home. Place a craigslist add asking for a home for it too.

    Barnable, I keep benadryl in my house for folks like you that have the cat alergies. It works wonders and will keep you from being miserable while being a good samaritan.

    We have 3 cats and two dogs and have had family members stay with us that are either extremely allergic or have emphysema (on oxygen 24/7)and have major breathing issues and the best thing they say to use is Claritin for their allergies. There is a no drowsy formula and they've all been able to stay with us for at least 5 days without any negative side effects.

    If this helps you to hang on to the kitty till you find a suitable foster home for him.

    And bless you for taking him in during this extreme winter

    Then I went to that thread and I wonder if the person who thought they saw Dusty really did?

    Barnable that's great that you found a foster home ("suitable" I hope means great!). Do we know if the cat is a boy or a girl? (Sorry I'm not going to explain that one. Someone else can!). Thanks again for helping out.

    I know, but Barnable didn't seem confident in his/her cat describing abilities...thought a picture might help. The Dusty saga really tugs at my heart strings -- I see her "missing cat" flyers every day. Makes me very grateful that my big fat cat is warm and safe (even if he takes up half of the bed).

    Re: Dusty, that person who posted seemed SO sure (although the guardian said there was another cat that looked like hers previously - I read the thread quickly tho'...) they had seen him or her.

    I've read that sometimes it can be at least six months later that cats are found.

    It would be very hard to deal with not knowing. Then thinking some random person has the cat...

    I am Dusty's owner and she is still missing so of course I picked up on this post! The description rules out Dusty as she wasn't stripey and was indeed more of a light brown color but thankyou so much Park Place Mama for suggesting considering her. She did have a stripey tail with a black tip but this doesn't sound like her. I add my thanks to you Barnable for helping find this cat's owners. If they are out there looking for him/her they will be beyond grateful if you can reunited them.
    Worth contacting www.nycacc.org the New York Animal Control who have a big database of lost cats and local vets too as this is where people will be searching if they've lost a cat.

    Sorry to have been out of the loop. Dusty is not the cat. Confirmed with the foster parents. I have been checking the web and have not found a notice for the cat in question. Thinking of putting up some signs but if, in the interim, you see any notices for a missing cat as I described him, please get at me.

    Dawnc, don't give up hope in finding Dusty. Just yesterday there was a story about a dog in Montana that got lost when the family had stopped enroute to moving to Washington state and was found 6 months later, thinner but fairly healthy.The woman had been hopeless knowing the dog could encounter coyotes, bear and who knows what out there, besides being the coldest winter in years. The family had stayed on two days searching for the dog with no luck, but it was an lost dog sign that someone saw and contacted them with the good news.

    You never know if someone may have taken her in for the winter and she may find her way back to you. I know how hard it is to lose an animal/friend. Many years ago we lost a dog for a month during winter when the temperature read -10, and she was found shivering in someones garage. Very thin but alive. And she had traveled about 15 miles across major highways, streets and rivers.

    We'll keep our fingers crossed for you.

    ^^ This. A friend lost her dog. Thought all was lost. A year passed, they ended up getting a new puppy. About a week after the new puppy was home, they got a call from a vet 45 miles away saying they had their dog. Thankfully, she was microchipped and the vet just happened to check to see. She'd been found on a freeway and a passing motorist stopped and brought her to the vet. She, too, was thin but healthy, had a new collar on (someone had obviously taken her in at some point and either she got away again or they let her go). Happy endings DO happen.
