of course I'm in management so I don't know how to do this shit. I know just enough to make me dangerous

For the record, I recently had horrible problems with my linksys router as well to the point that I just gave up and went out and bought a new router. Things are good so far, but if I have problems again, Jeffrey is getting fed.

<---still sitting here wondering which laptop would be best to throw

ifyou have a mac, throw it....if it doesnt have windows installed lol

I'm back in bizness

Ok, TW was just here and replaced my cable modem. They also went outside and said my lines are all chewed up, so on Monday they are being replaced. If that doesn't fix this stuff, I may have to move :-)

Chewed up cable lines? Maybe that's what killed the squirrel!

looks like I'm 2 for 2 lol
Combo of the cable lines and possible router issues.
It's not good to spread throttling rumors Jeff
Looks like you got those TWC guys all in a hizzy about it as well lol -

Heh, if only it were a case of mere rumors about other major ISPs out there and not actual, well-documented lawsuits and investigations taken up by the FCC, even prompting Google to throw money behind developing tools to detect and measure it.

Glad to hear TWC's public position on the matter.
That said, every major ISP has traffic shaping, throttling and management tools to manage congestion, attacks, etc., nothing new. Many, like Comcast for example, use controversial, deep-packet-inspection tools from companies like http://www.sandvine.com or http://www.camiant.com or others to manage and throttle their various types of traffic according to whatever rules they decided to set. Like so many other things, it's all how, when and why they use them that counts. Hence the lawsuits and investigations.
*edit: gawwd this is boring. Sorry. Elsewhere on the subject of series of tubes:

Tubes?!
The stuff teh interwebs are made of! -

for you hackers with a linksys wireless router check out dd-wrt. http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php
gives you some nice control and options over your traffic.
to the OP, when you said your router reset itself, and your mention of WEP, along with your vonage issues, the first thing that came to mind is that you were hacked.
heavy bandwidth usage would take a toll on vonage's quality.
as stated in the thread, don't use WEP. it is easily hacked.
I saw someone with a serious setup wardriving the other day. I approached him to find out what he was up to, but he peeled off on me. He was in a white 2 door car with an array of about 8 antenna over the passenger side. -
Hah. Damn.
-
yeah, its good.
I tried it for about a month until my router started acting all weird and dropping my network. I thought it was about to get bricked, so I flashed it back to the old linksys stuff.
To get full use of that firmware, a cheap buffalo router is the way to go. -

Dear Jeff,
I'm the director of digital communications for Time Warner Cable, just to be clear here.
And I can emphatically state that we don't manipulate third party VOIP data, ever.
Did I mention that I hate Time Warner? Huh?
I'm sitting on the phone for 15+ minutes now being passed around and around. I had one converter box totally out for 3 days. For my other tv, I drove down to your offices and picked up an HDTV DVR. Guess what? it didn't work. It took 36 hours for them to get the channels right. Both times agents told me the credits would be issued automatically. Guess what? This clown on the phone tells me I have to call back each time the problem is resolved to get my credit. Um...no! I don't have to call and go from agent to agent to get credits I deserve and which should have happened automatically. He tried to deny my credit. I insisted on getting a supervisor. It was only then that the agent suddenly had the magic powers to issue the credit himself.
Your customer service sucks ass, has always sucked ass and will probably always suck ass.
Signed,
Fed Up Flexi -
Flexi, TW's customer service complete suckiness is legendary. But I hate to say, if you really think FIOS is going to be the savior in the white horse, I disagree. Read it and weep.

Oh, I know TWC's suckiness is legendary. I have a very long and very ugly track record with them. Someday I hope there is true competition in the area and then maybe their customer service will work harder to differentiate themselves.
Sigh. A girl can dream -
I've had a Verizon landline for a long time. It can take weeks to get repaired if anything goes wrong. Landline AND cable? I can't imagine. Maybe a healthy competition will help. Most likely we'll end up with two inept cable companies instead of one.
