The Police Inaction! — Brooklynian

The Police Inaction!

So I’m at the Crunch Gym on Flatbush and I’m doing my cardio workout upstairs looking down on Flatbush Ave and I notice there are about four double-parked cars. So I’m wondering if the police will come by and give a ticket while I’m exercising and sure enough, emerging from Hawaii Chinese are two Police officers carrying their lunch. They look both ways and cross the street to their cruiser which is parked in the bus stop near American Apparel doing absolutely nothing about the double-parked cars and I think, “Give them a break, it’s their lunch hour and they have hot food.”

So I finish up my cardio and move on. At times I glance out the window and notice the continued flow of double-parked cars on Flatbush Ave without a Police officer to be seen. After a while I’m done at the gym and walk out onto the street and make a phone call. At this time the traffic is bad and there are about ten double-parked cars. I walk up to the corner of Sterling Place and there I see two Police officers on foot. They are pointing in the direction of all the double-parked cars and they cross the street but instead of ticketing any cars they walk into Parkside Diner.

So now I’m like WTF?

So I call 311 and make a non-emergency illegal parking complaint. At this time there are 10 – 12 double-parked cars. I then head into Key Food for some pre-Super Bowl shopping which takes my mind off the parking situation. After ten minutes and checking out, I walk outside expecting nothing to have happened. But what do I see? A Police cruiser driving by! Yeah! I think, 311 does work! But then I notice they are not ticketing anyone, instead the Police are choosing not to enforce one violation and let mayhem ensue. I notice the passenger side window is rolled down and the officer is nonchalantly observing the chaos so I walk up to a double-parked car with no one in it, point to it and yell at the officer, “Hey! Do you know that double-parking is illegal in New York City?” He looks at me, obviously thinking how he would just love to hope out of his car and arrest me for telling him how to do his job. “Yeah I know,” he replies, probably daydreaming of his lunch.

I’m sorry, but I don’t want a police state, but I do want the laws of New York City enforced, especially when there is a budget shortfall and the city is doing everything it can to discourage people from using cars!

This is exactly why the Police, IMO, are looked down upon, why they are known as “Pigs.” They do not enforce the law except when they feel like it! Imagine if everyone was able to do their job only when they wanted to?

    i 100% agree with Mr.Bobby

that shits EPIC .. but it fuels my HATE for the parking agents/meter maids !

Start of the month though so they don't have to bother with fulfilling the quota for a few weeks.
  • yeah they dont give a fuck in the beg of the month its the end when quotes need to be filled !

back to you on this pole in the gym?

    naa j/k
  • Thats why people refer to Cops as pigs? Did you ever stop to think that maybe the Police were excercising their discretion? Given the state of the economy, maybe they're a little reluctant when issuing a $115 dollar summons. I'm not a big fan of double parking myself, especially on Flatbush ave, but do you really think that every person deserves a summons. Should the woman who double parks her car to run into the pharmacy to get medicine for her sick infant be treated the same as the lazy fat slob who cant find legal parking when ordering wings at wing wagon? To say thats the reason why Police get looked down upon, is quite ignorant! Would you like the Police painting the town orange with summonses rather than arresting criminals and detering Crimes? Also FYI, Police are not required to enforce every Law by arresting offenders and issuing summonses, discretion is utilized every day, but maybe the Cops should start enforcing every Law, regardless of the particular circumstances. I hope for your sake you never Jay walk.
P.S. I'm really curious as to what you do for a living meredith
  • and as i thought YOU (human above me) came thru with a STELLAR post

This is what I love about NY. I live in the 84th and there is a deli that has no standing signs in front of it. For good reason, the street is narrow and if you park there you'll block a truck coming through. However, if you pull up on the curb (which is illegal) you acknowledge the problem and the cops won't give a ticket because you're not blocking the street. Maybe the cops do this because that's a deli they use and parking on the curb is what they do. It doesn't mean it will last because some busybody like MeredithB will complain and some of us will have to be sacrificed once in a while. It's not personal it's just business!

Its not an either or proposition though. They can enforce the law without issuing a ticket in exercising their discretion. they can do what the cops in Clinton Hill do on Clinton Avenue: Stop behind the double parked car and turn on their siren a little. They get the driver's attention and tell them to move on or risk getting a ticket. It works on Clinton Ave.
  • I had spoken with an officer from the 72nd ,who said he ticketed a person for riding their bike on a crowded sidewalk.
When returning to the pct., it was presented to the capt., after reviewing it , the capt. threw it in the garbage.

When I asked will there be any tickets written in the future, the response was , not by me.

The problem may not be the officers, it may be what they are instructed to do.
  • Chill out Meredith. You should use some discretion when insulting police. You may need them someday.

Cops "exercising their discretion" is another way of saying "cops not doing their job" IMO.
King without a crown wrote: Should the woman who double parks her car to run into the pharmacy to get medicine for her sick infant be treated the same as the lazy fat slob who cant find legal parking when ordering wings at wing wagon?
Yes. The law is the law. But I'm sure the cops walking across the street in my story knew exactly what every car was parked there for be it wings, Chinese food or medicine.
King without a crown wrote: Would you like the Police painting the town orange with summonses rather than arresting criminals and detering Crimes?
yeah, those cops are always deterring criminals. 24/7. I forgot how busy they are. Right.

Furthermore, maybe if the cops enforced the little things, there wouldn't be so many criminals? You never know who or what you'll find writing a traffic violation.

I work for a law firm.

You know, the night before I did need the police as my upstairs neighbor decided to have a huge party to all hours of the morning. When the police did show up, they told me to stop harrassing her by complaining about the party!!
  • Spoke to a few cops told them about this site. They said that the next time that there's alternate parking that ALL the cars that are double parked will be ticketed. Oh, and make sure you don't j walk. If you don't like the way things are done here... leave
