sore throat — Brooklynian

sore throat

I get strep throat several times a year and it always feels like I tried to swallow some fiberglass and it got stuck.

I've been using Halls throat drops for years out of habit but today CVS was out of *my* flavor so I bought some Cepacol soar throat drops. Wow! Sweet relief. Try them if you have a really soar throat. They still don't taste fantastic but are less disgusting than some others I've had (fishermans something or other, gross).

The one time I let a doc do a strep test, they convinced me I needed strong antibiotics for 10 days b/c I had "pretty much every strain of strep". The painful part is only about 3 days, but antibiotics make me feel bleh for the entire duration so I am avoiding the doc. Is this a mistake?

  • That's really weird that you get it multiple times a year. I'd go to a doctor. I go to Doctor Raffinan on 8th ave and Lincoln Place. Highly recommend him.
  • Errrrrrrrr, maybe you need your tonsils removed?
Also, gargle with salty hot water - hot as you can stand, with as much salt as will dissolve.
  • I'm trying to have my bf and a couple of specific friends decide when I see a doctor b/c my track record of judging the severity my own health problems is pretty bad, ie I don't go for anything but my lady check-ups once a year. Got frustrated with the staff at Dr. Stroud's office (still like Dr. Stroud) so I'm going to Dr. Raf in March for some tests I need done.

From what I've read, a handful of adults get strep really often and if you see the same doc about it, they will eventually suggest removing your tonsils (or something back there). That fixes it for a few years, but it might start again. If the main treatment is antibiotics, I don't see much benefit from taking antibiotics several times a year.

When my schedule has me on the trains during off times, I don't seem to get sick. Now that I'm back on during rush hour I've been getting sick (cough from hell for 3 weeks in December, now this). I blame the trains!

    remove your tonsils.

I did that last year and it solved a lot of problems.
  • Plus you get lots of Ice Cream!

Can I just say to my doc (who will be a new one for me) "I want my tonsils removed" and he'll help me out? The few times I've mentioned it at a physical the doc has said they personally would have to see me and confirm lots of cases of strep before they would do that.

    Were you getting strep?
  • Most people get strep throat during the winter because of the dry air. Its especially common in apartments with steam radiators. get a humidifier and your problem might be solved.

This always works for me. Am I wrong?

You get a sore throat from dry air, allergies, etc. Strep throat is caused by a bacteria, and spreads readily between people, though it tends to be in kids.

I have strep, not a sore throat. A sore throat hurts so much less than this and doesn't make my throat look moldy (white spots) and make the doctor looking at it go "wow, that's bad" and back away to put on a face mask.

I got it back when I lived in a muggy swamp and I get it year round, anyway.
  • after suffering much like you for many many years with recurring bouts of strep, my cousin finally had her tonsils out a couple of years ago (at 40 years of age, no less) and is much happier because of it. good luck to you and feel better soon!
  • I agree with pitu. Gargle with salt and water. I do warm, never tried hot. Also if you are courageous, try the nettie pot (you can buy it online or any health food store) to wash out your nasal passages. I find that I get a sore throat from post nasal drip, something using a nettie pot on a regular basis helps prevent. Good luck and feel better!
  • Is this nettie pot a tea? Or am I supposed to snort it?
  • It's a device. You use it to pour hot saline water into your sinuses. Kinda gross if you ask me but some people swear by them.

  • Wait, the only way I can see that kettle working is if I lay down and shove it up my nose. Then I would make a big mess.
  • You lean over the tub or sink and shove it up your nose. It slides out the other side.

To relieve nasal congestion nettie pots are the greatest invention of all time. No exaggeration.
  • Ok where can I buy one of these things in the slope? and how much salt do i add to the water?
  • I have one and think it rocks. You should be able to find one at any health store - also maybe a pharmacy (I got mine on amazon). It's about a half teaspoon of salt for every cup of water.
  • I bought mine at East West Books on 14th St and 5th Ave. I think it was about $20. The salt maybe $6 to 8. There is a spoon in the salt container that measures it for you. The one container lasts a while. Don't use regular salt as that would hurt alot.
  • I love my nettie pot. Using it at first was SO weird, like I was drowning or something. But when I did it, I was finally able to breathe!! And once you get used to it, you won't remember what it was like before it.

Actually, it was quite simple with me. My tonsils were enlarged by like 4 times. I wasnt getting sick, but they were uncomfortable.

Go ahead and ask him. :)
