Optimum Online Connection Issues? — Brooklynian

Optimum Online Connection Issues?

madman
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Ive been having intermittent problems with internet connectivity and phone service through Optimum Online since Wednesday. They say nothing is wrong on their end. I think they are full of shit and don't want to admit to massive network issues. Anyone else having problems lately?

  • OK, if you are having the same problems I am... packet loss, intermittent disconnects from the internet, digital phone service loss as well, don't let them tell you it's your modem, or that you might have a wire loose.

They are upgrading their network (DOCSIS 3.0 Implementation) and all of the above are symptoms of that. Sure, some rat may have chewed a cable somewhere, and you should check to make sure your modem is working normally, but don't let them tell you the network is working just fine when they KNOW the are having these issues because of the DOCSIS upgrade.

They are sending a repairman to my house, crediting me for the days of interrupted service, and if they can't fix it, I'm going back to DSL. It just pisses me off that I had to call them 4 times to get a straight answer.

When the subways are out due to repairs, they post a note so you dont stand there all night waiting for a train that won't come. Optimum could learn a thing or two from the MTA. And THAT'S just scary.
  • I agree that Optimum is crap. I've had them come to my place twice the last month simply to check the strength of their signal coming into the sourcebox on the apt building. They say it's as strong as they can make it, yet there's still that annoying, unacceptable delay between the remote control and the menu and action on the TV screen. And the download speeds provided by their "high speed" internet are shit. They're complacent with mediocre service, and with the way the cable providers have jurisdiction over certain neighborhoods, dissatisfied customers like us are left with no recourse. It's bullshit.

On a similar note, I went into Target Friday morning for a specific item. Of course, as per usual, the shelf was totally empty of all brands and models, and the retarded staff assured me, without checking, that they had nothing in stock. This is my experience 9 times out of 10 with Target Atlantic Center.

My point -- shitty service seems to be acceptable in our borough. Let's revolt!

interesting because I have had the same problem and they told me my signal was too STRONG! Then they walk outside and look at the service pole that they cant access. WOW! They should name themselves Optimum and the three bears instead of triple play.
  • my internet is slow as crap too. what recourse is there?

oh and i love how they just dropped half of there HD programing. then replace it with things like comedy central HD where none of the programing is recorded in HD.
  • too slow and too expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • And then of course there's the mysterious cell-phone interference that distorts ESPN-HD and ESPN2-HD only. Can't watch the Australian Open or NBA games without intermittent fucked up pixellation interruptions n shit.
  • Checkout the OOL forum at the below site as you are no alone with these problems. The gist of what I read is the they are upgrading their network and people will see these issues until they get done. FWIW I had one really bad day about a week ago but it's been better recently

  • While we're bitching about Cablevision/Optimum: I threw out my TV and handed the cable box and remote to the techie who came out to disconnect the service a few weeks ago. Now they're charging me $252 for the equipment, because they say they didn't get it back / can't locate it.

    No receipt?

A dubious scrawl on a pink slip -- which is what I'll try to use if they don't manage to locate the gear.
  • I have Optimum and besides a couple problems it has been fine for the last 2 yrs. I used to have Verizon and that was the BIGGEST JOKE EVER! They internet was so slow, they would add things to the bill that I didn't even had and their customer service was awful.
I guess all cable/phone companies are bad in general because they don't really need to compete in your area so why bother to be nice to your customers.

    That counts!
  • Our internet has been okay, but we've had no dial tone on our phone all day. What is the effing point of having a landline if it doesn't work reliably?
  • ah ha no wonder I have had to restart my router constantly for the past week ,although it has been better since sunday night for me anyways

im this close to getting rid of cablevision though
not thrilled that they yanked all the VOOM channels and then replaced them with premium HD channels
    that is shady!

its okay now..but when i called they said they hadn't heard of any problem from anyone else!!.
  • They are full of shit. The tech came over and tightened the cable connection to the modem. That's it. What a waste of my time. If it goes out again, I'm going to cancel my service and report them to the BBB. It's not much, but it's all I can do.
  • i don't know too much about the technology..but they were saying that it was the signal that was the problem and that would be a different issue than the line
  • Yup. The tech's can't do anything about network issues. They can check to see if there's a corrosion or something in the line that would lead to packet loss. But somehow, I think the fact that they are upgrading their entire network might have more to do with why so many people are having issues than funky wires.

There is a good class-action case here for some ambitious lawyer.
  • Area-wide outage tonight from 6pm. ETA 4 hours, says their chat drone. Checked some of my neighbors' open routers, and it looks like everyone round here with Cablevision is out.
  • hmmm... i use optimum online for my net access, and i haven't noticed any problems. i'm on dean near carlton.
  • service is absolute crap. I've been getting download speeds of 1.5 mbps consistently, via wifi and hardwired into the modem itself, for the last 4 days, day and night.

I have Cablevision for cable and internet - we had no disruptions of either last night or this morning.

Hi! My first post, after lurking for ages...

Just an fyi. Nothing shady about the loss of Voom, just sucky.

They laid off everyone and closed up shop. The axe was hanging over their heads for months when they lost a major satellite deal. They all got the boot in December. Harsh.
  • my DVR stopped working two days ago. they have no reason why.
  • We had an internet outage for about 3 weeks ... now I'm getting a runaround for the credit. Several neighbors in my building are also having a tough time too. I see the Cablevision truck on our block almost daily, if not weekly. Plus, the kicker, Time Warner stops their service half a block away. Can't switch to DSL or FiOS, because they too do not service my 'hood. I hate bending over and taking this.

whoa! they did the same thing to me.
i think they just came back and looked at the receipt and then dropped the charge, but it's scary that this is common.

This is part of my Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit humble family of DoctorJ. Just about everybody here tries to rip you off up front, and only reverse the 'error' if you notice. It's up to the consumer to check every line on every bill, every bank statement, every payslip, every retirement account transaction, every health insurance claim. Living here means a lot of forensic accountancy, paperwork, faxes and phonecalls for the individual. Not all societies play it this way; I saw more such 'errors' in the last year here than I did in my whole life outside the US.
  • So I called Cablevision because my Internet is still running in fits and starts. The person on the phone, who was unusually helpful compared to their usual reps, pretty much confirmed that the problem is originating from a line coming into my building, and scheduled an appointment. He said that if people are still experiencing slow service in the neighborhood (I mentioned that others had also reported slowdowns), they should give Cablevision a call.. he also said that they hadn't noticed any uptick in issues around here (which is odd because it sounds like others have called in. Hmm...). I hate the company as much as anyone else--I've had many problems with them--but at least this guy was nice.

I'm having the same problems with the internet going on and off. Any luck?
  • Im going to switch back to DSL. As much as I dislike the phone companies, DSL is far more stable than cable internet. And with hulu.com i don't really need TV anyway.
