  • "Unless we find ways to reverse some of the trends detailed in this report, the New York of the 21st century will continue to develop into a city that is made up increasingly of the rich, the poor, immigrant newcomers and a largely nomadic population of younger people who exit once they enter their 30s and begin establishing families."

    This is completely dead on.
  • i don't think anyone ever argued that gentrification was not happening and is not a problem, just that Obamanut is obnoxious.
  • Is Obamanut really that bad???
Maybe I'm used to real Brooklyn people....who say what they mean and still like you even if we disagree.

    Am I being obnoxious now????

Not sure if I'd call your comment obnoxious---I might call it ...real tired. (I think the operative word there is real)

Have you considered the Brooklyn Back When thread... you might fit right in... :P
  • Hate to toot my own horn (no wait, I guess that's not true), but I did link to this news story yesterday on the thread about the $2300-$2500 rental on 4th and 19th. This was all over the news yesterday.

    thank you
  • Hey are you callin' me old??? Oh no-- I was callin' myself old in my name......
I just read some old posts and WOW....people here can be really mean!

In "real life"... the one were we interact with humans face to face...I hope we all try to play nice.

I was born and raised in Windsor Terrace, lived in Sunset Park for a while and now live and work in Bay Ridge. That does not make me an expert on anything. I love Brooklyn and I am proud to call it my home.
  • Paul Revere rode his horse shouting 'The British are coming ,The British are coming and is called a hero.

Obamanut rode through Park Slope on his skate board, and shouting The Gentrifiers are coming , The Gentrifiers are coming and he is treated as under constant attack, wwhwere as the weej..

I think both are about as current. Meaning when I hear Obamanut rant about gentrification, I think to myself "wasn't Park Slope gentrified like 20 years ago?"

...kinda like I'd think if I saw Paul Revere....
  • for some reason my post hit up before i adjusted it and every thing on the right side is cut off and is not readable and cannot be edited .
It's a problem that should be adjusted.

Just another 'friendly' nudge to the natives to let us know that we are relics who've worn out our welcome and unless we agree to whistle to the tune of the newcomers we should find our way to the door and out of Park Slope.

It's ok bklynchick, you will soon discover that any sort of talk of "real Brooklyn" that comes from anyone actually from here is immediately dismissed by Park Slopers as "lame," "tired," etc.

The part where I grew up wasn't. It held out until well into the late 90's, and maybe even a little bit longer.

Would you care to suggest a more relevant and thought-provoking topic pertaining to Park Slope, then? Something a tad more interesting than new cookie-cutter restaurant openings to serve the neighborhood's cookie-cutter residents?

Listen pal, you're in my thread. I don't come to your thread and knock the Odwalla out of your hand.

    "Hearts Hipsters," lol.. brilliant.
  • Complaints about gentrification and gentrifiers are not new. Obamanut's hipsteria is predictable and stale (like the air inside Farrell's). The only "point" s/he may have is the one on top of her/his head.

And your points are rehearsed and lame, like the atmosphere inside Sidecar.

The only people interesting in listening to your contrived babble are your fellow fakes, so go ahead and yuck it up over your next microbrew. I'll be over here with the real people living real lives.

Last I checked, you were the one who took a moment of your valuable day to read a thread entitled "Looks like Obamanut has a point...," so how boring can I be?

To paraphrase Jack Nicholson, "You want me on Brooklynian.. You NEED me on Brooklynian."

Look Buddy, let's say that in your home town of wheretheheckever, as you grew and finally became of age you wanted to stay. However, you no longer can afford to live in your town and can't afford a hole in the wall because of gentrification. Maybe gentrification is inevitable but it really sucks, especially as a large portion (not all) gentrifiers are essentially obnoxious and pretentious and don't have a clue. I've been trying to find a column that Denis Hamill wrote a while ago (at least 8 years ago) that sums it up perfectly. It may be "stale and predictable" but so is your rejoinder.

I have no doubt that gentrification is not a pleasant process for people who suffer from rising property taxes and obnoxious new neighbors. Usually, these negatives are only slightly mitigated by things like an increase of services (including police service) and amenities (including restaurants) that would not otherwise have flowed into the area.

Let's say that one finds that the negatives outweigh the mitigating factors and gentrification should be fought against. One could b*tch and moan hipsterically about rude bicyclists and skinny neighbors who play The Sounds at high volumes. Or one could face that fact that as long as our economic system allows residential spaces to be turned into spaces from which wealth is extracted, there will be gentrification and displacement. If one takes the second point of view, one might seek to join a local community organization (ala the sane Obama) to help local residents who face displacement and other forms of alienation to claim their "rights" to residential space. This latter course of action, while not the only one possible, is at least rational. Sadly, this is not what the central anti-gentrifier here represents.

As for myself, I've moved around quite a lot and I am undisturbed by experiencing new things and new people. I suspect part of the heightened emotional cathexis expressed in this and other recent threads is an age old antipathy that is expressed towards "outsiders" and "newcomers." When all else fails, it is easy to simply plant one's flag and say "get off my turf." Unfortunately, the myth of ownership over one's infantile home is shattered by the reality principle. Are all gentrifiers obnoxious and pretentious? No. Are all "original residents" (whatever that might mean in Brooklyn) nice people? No. It seems to me that rather than point fingers at individuals, it would be more profitable (but apparently less psychically satisfying) to look to amend the institutional patterns that exacerbate the worst aspects of gentrification.

This exchange (to me) is hysterical. Whether or not you agree with O-nut some of the time or all of the time or none of the time, you have to admit he/she expresses him/herself well and is quite sharp. I'm often entertained, but then again, I have a brother who teases me mercilessly about our opposing political/societal views and I find him entertaining/sharp a lot of the time too.
(Witch-king wasn't a sloucher either in this exchange.)
  • No one here is questioning O-nut (appropriate nickname, by the way)'s intelligence. What some of us question is his consistent obsession with gentrification, and the effect that obsession has upon discourse in the various threads he elects to enter.

No one forces you or anyone else here to read my posts, which are no more numerous than any other regular poster on this board, let alone reply to them. Just ignore me if you aren't interested in what I have to say. I do it all the time to certain posters.

You make it sound as if you are being forced against your will to read my every word, like some sort of Clockwork Orange-esque torture.

  • Obama,

You wrote, "Listen pal, you're in my thread. I don't come to your thread and knock the Odwalla out of your hand."

That is very clever, although I fear I am the guy holding the Odwalla.
  • Occasionally funny, but more often SO frequently hostile in a one-note unfunny way that it wears on me. A few of you like watching the fight, I don't. It pours cement on the board, crowds out real discussion of the issues, and discourages posters who do "play nice."

It's great to talk about gentrification and any other issue facing our disparate community - that is totally not the problem. Repeating YOU'RE ALL A BUNCH OF GENTRIFYING MORONS is the problem. Dude, we're not. You're yelling at a whole neighborhood. You're saying that sh*t to people who share your vintage in PS.

I'm speaking as both a mod on this board and as a neighbor. The brush is too broad, everyone is attacked, and no real discussion is had. Bleeech.
