Safety at night for female walking around 9-7 Av + 41-44 sts
Hello all. I'm hoping you all who know the neighborhood can advise me.
I'm looking at an apartment in Sunset Park tonight. It's around 41st St. and 7th Ave, I think facing the Park. I'm not familiar with the neighborhood. The closest subway is the D/M stop at 9th Ave + 38th St. How safe is that walk home at night for a woman alone? Is it isolated?
I will be checking it out in person to get a sense, but I would really appreciate any feedback you insiders have.

While I'm not up that far in the avenues (I'm on 4th), I've never felt unsafe walking home from the subway or the store.

The 9th Ave stop walk can feel a bit desolate, especially later in the evening. Personally, I'd probably get off at 36th or 45th and walk from there. 5th is pretty busy, and it's not that much farther.
It really depends how late you're talking. If you do a search for threads, this issue came up a few months ago. -
I walk home frequently from the D stop at 9th at around 7:30 and sometimes later (but not REALLY late) by myself (and I'm a pregnant woman in her 30s), and there are frequently a lot of people getting off the train. I am always aware of my surroundings and have never felt threatened or anything, but as another poster said, it can feel a wee bit desolate, esp. on 39th Street (I live on 41st between 7th and 8th). In the spring and summer I feel less concerned for some reason, perhaps because it's light out longer....I much prefer taking the D closer to home, though, than getting off at 36th Street, though that could be just plain laziness. Good luck with your apartment search.
Howdy, Stranger!
