How long?

I never own a dog, but i've dog sitted a few times, like right now.

now, i've seen people leaving their dogs outside some stores while they run their errands, but im wondering how long can you leave your dog tied outside like that, assuming no extreme weather involved, without getting dog-napped?

  • Not one split second. I would never leave my dog tied up outside a store. If you have errands to run, leave the dog at home. All it takes is a fraction of a minute for someone to unhook a leash or collar and be off.
  • I agree with Ana.

My main rule is that dog walks and errands are never combined unless the bf is with us and one of us stays outside with the dog while one goes in shops. That means the dog is never tied up and left alone.

The dogs don't usually like it. Other people and their passing pets may not like it. Someone could steal the dog (potentially with very bad intentions). The dog could get loose and get hurt (I know of two stories of tied up dogs getting loose and ending up hit by cars.)

If you're not ready to pick up the dog's poop all the time and you don't think you have time to run errands separately from walking the dog, don't get a dog. If that stuff sounds alright, the having a pup is worth it all.
  • yeah, that's what i've always thought, it's too easy to untie the leash and walk away with a dog, but i see many people still do that.

now, another newbie question, is it normal if a dog doesnt poop for a day? i was walking the 2 dogs im sitting yesterday. Dog A pooped with no problem, but Dog B didnt poop at all, granted she didnt eat much yesterday for some reason, maybe because it was their first day with me (although im no stranger to them either). I extended my walk hoping she would, but she still didnt.

it kinda got me worried. i havent walked them yet today, but i hope Dog B will get something out today.
  • Don;t worry about it I have 2 dogs, sometimes they poop in unison, sometimes in contradiction, and sometimes one is completely mute for a day while the other craps a wagon full!
  • Probably nothing to worry about yet. It's very common for dogs to eat less in a new environment (even with someone they know very well) and less eating equals less pooping.

Do the two dogs live together normally? If not, maybe the one is shy and needs a lone trip out to poop.
  • thanks! yeah, the two dogs live together, they are from the same owner.

i walked them yesterday, and Dog B finally pooped. i take it as a good sign.
