Just say NO to Windows!
I wouldn't normally presume to know anything about computers compared to some of you Geeks, but I just unchecked the box that says "let Windows manage your wireless connections" and the speed increase is making me woozy, I tell you! If you already knew that, well then thanks for sharing you assholes, you!
Oh , Happy Valentine's Day Apple Pants.

where is that box and what version of windows are you on?

Using XP
OK here goes:
Start menu
Connect to
Wireless network connection
Properties
Wireless Networks
top box (uncheck it)
At that point you'll get prompted to pick your wireless network again -
hmm not the same setup in vista. no biggie
-
that's not what my XP looks like either. There's no "connect to" off of my start button on XP
-
....but...I know where you are talking about...you can right-click your network connection from the bottom right on the task bar...do "view available wireless networks", "change advanced settings", click the "wireless networks" tab, and it's the top box (uncheck it).
there are other ways to get there thru control panel as well -
It would be easier to just upgrade to Mac. I know. I'm a recovering PCer.

I can't disagree. I started with Macs IIx, SE 30's cx's, and a shit load of Quadras, but unfortunately with 3 boys wanting to play TFC or Counter Strike or Day of Defeat (my favorite) there was no way to instill any sense of Mac tradition. Oh yea, Vampire Slayer too! So, I guess that makes me downwardly mobile. -
It wouldn't surprise me to see that the hardware manufacturer's driver works better than MS's, but I've never noticed a drastic difference on any machine I've used... anywho, keep in mind that connection speeds have been piss poor in Optonline Land for the last month or so - speedy one second, slow the next, nonexistent a moment later... this could easily account for any perceived differences in connection speed, as could network traffic at any given time.
Howdy, Stranger!
