Looking for book or DVD — Brooklynian

Looking for book or DVD

My best friend's daughter who is 14 will be undergoing chemo next week and has decided that she will control her hair loss and will be shaving her own head before she starts. We decided to throw her a "hair cutting" party and most of us want to bring her nice scarves and hats (since she does not want to wear a wig all the time).

What I am specifically looking for is a DVD or book that can show her how to fashionably wrap scarves on her head. I checked Borders and I didn't get much out of my search of Amazon. Does anyone know where I might be able to get a book or DVD on the subject.

  • I googled for you Stacey :)

  • hats! at least one by Kangol.
More fashionable than scarves for most 14 year olds, no?

So sorry to hear about this kid's situation. I hope she gains strength from shaving her head instead of waiting on chemo. I've been to the barber with someone doing that . . . I feel your pain, Stace.

May or may not be right for you or your friends, but it's a really different view from a woman dealing in her own way. And it may not be Safe For Work, depending on your office.
    I'll be thinking of you.
  • Thanks Voodoo. That was a great idea and since I could download it I can bind it with the cover of my choice.

Great minds think alike - I was looking at the pink baseball cap-type one.

Thanks for the Vlog. I will pass it on to her. She is a great kid and the doctors are very positive about her prognosis. Its hard to get sad when she is so positive and strong for us all.

  • Subject: Hair Today Gone Tomorrow

    Hi there,

I don't have any DVDs or books on unique hair accessories, but I did survive chemo. I am pretty young as well, although not 14, and can tell you that it took a while for my hair to come out and when it did, I just looked like a baby. It was months before I lost my hair. I thought about shaving it, but I thought it might be premature and I did it in stages. I was also able to try some new dos. The most important thing is support. Let me know if your girl needs any cuz I got plenty to go around!
  • Hey Stacey--don't forget about the tried and true classic bandanna. Something about it just screams supercool bald girl to me. Lots of good wishes and love to this girl, your friend and you.
  • Also- if her hair is long enough, she might consider donating it to locks of love (I think it has to be 9 inches?) That way she'll be doing something great for someone else, too :)
  • Thanks guys I showed her your posts and it made her feel so good.

Thanks Carmen - her hair is long enough and she is donating to Locks of Love.

Flo - She is in a neighborhood that has seen some gang increase so her mom is really nervous about her wearing bandannas.

Crown thanks for sharing - it made her feel very positive about her outcome especially since you are now a survivor. Her mom also promised her that if the doctor says okay she can even experiment with colors so that lifted her spirits up a little more about losing her hair.

    Thanks again all xoxox

Stacey--found some pretty bandanas that probably wouldn't be confused with any gangs at all.
  • I love some of these shirts. While she might be too young for a "Fuck Cancer" shirt, a button with "My bald head is cuter than your bad haircut" on it might be fun for her
