steak — Brooklynian

steak

I want a big honkin chunk of bloody beef.

where should I go? Preferably in Park Slope or Manhattan below 14th st.

Been to Luger's, Smith & Wollensky, etc. I feel as though most of the renowned steakhouses are a bit overrated.
I'm more looking for a regular restaurant that happens to have great steak.

Edit: well, I shouldn't say that Luger's is overrated it was very good the few times I've been. I just don't have Peter Luger money right now, ya dig?

  • while it's not in the same league as Luger's, S&W, Keans (which I think never get the praise it deserves), if you are feeling lazy and want to stay local, 12th St. Bar and Grill has a really tasty skirt steak for ~$20 - I think it's one of the best local bargains around - comes with potatoes and spinach and is a healthy portion.

Also, locally, you can go to Blue Ribbon if you are up for spending more money.

Lastly, one of my relatively new discoveries (although it is one of the oldest restaurants in the city), I love, love, love the buffalo steak at Bridge Cafe (on a tiny little cobblestone street just above the S. Street Seaport).
  • This will probably sound insane and you may want to try this alone but I used to order medium rib eyes at 7th Ave Donuts on 9th St & 7th Ave and they were quite delicious.
  • Knickerbocker Bar & Grill makes a nice steak at less than Luger's pricing.
  • My boss, who's eaten at every steakhouse this side of the Hudson and echos your sentiment on many of the popular spots, swears by Benny & Jack's.
  • Is Steak Frites (just north of Union Square) still around? I've always gotten solid steaks there too.

    They moved to the Village.

Here's a coupon for 20% off the entire check, good through 3/31/09:

And here's the link to the restaurant:

I'm across the street - no. Same ownership has, in under 18 months, gone from Steak Frites, Cafe Society, and now back to steak - Union Prime. Steak Frites was far better than the current iteration.

That location has a new restaurant, but the original Steak Frites still exists in a new location (see my post above).
  • For something different and delicious, in a totally gross basement room, try the Romanian tenderloin steak at Sammy's Roumanian Restaurant, 157 Chrystie St at Delancy.

Warning: your arteries will never be the same. While the steak will not destroy them, the schmaltz on rye bread and greeven, chopped liver (more schmaltz), and other side dishes will guarantee a heart attack before you finish dinner.
  • Has anyone mentioned the neanderthal hunk of meat with fried potatoes (for 2) at convivium? It's freaking enormous!

Sammy's is always great fun with a group of people. If out-of-town guests are looking for something different, this is where we take them. Like all Manhattan steakhouses, not cheap. Bottle of vodka (locked in a block of ice) for the table is fun, but approaching $100 these days.

That's right - I remembered it in the back of my mind somewhere - let's hope it's as good as before, but given their current Union Prime (again, same ownership, from my understanding), I'd be surprised if it hasn't fallen off a little.
  • If you want to stay local ....try Sugar Canes Calypso Steak. Its very good and tasty. It is on Flatbush Ave and Bergen....across from the Mexican Taco place. I would order it before hand and pick it up cause they are crowded on Sundays .
  • awesome thanks for all the tips - and that coupon
