Just moved.... — Brooklynian

Just moved....

Hi, so I just moved to the Bushwick area (morgan ave stop) from Crown Heights only a week ago. Friday evening at around 6-7pm I was mugged at bogart and siegal. The guy was following me on Bogart and I hopped into the grocery store to lose him. Well, my gut instinct was right and I should have just called the cops right then, but I figured I had lost the guy or hoped he had become disinterested and he grabbed my purse (not without a solid fight though!) and got away. There was a guy who heard me screaming and tryed to run after him (thank you!!) but was unsuccessful.

Anyways, I am relatively street smart and very cautious person (I was also mugged at my front door in Crown Heights back in July). But I am a small girl and apparrantly a solid target. Any good tips for keeping safe? Also, I really enjoy this neighborhood, but I just don't want to be scared everytime I come home from work. How can we stick together as a community?

  • Wow- mugged twice in one year...that really sucks.

I think you said it though, you're small, a woman, and therefore an easy target. Maybe its best if you just cab it late at night. Your new neighborhood is full of desolate areas and the fact is, you're just too easy a target for people with bad intentions. Coming home late at night (or any time where there's no one else on the block...), there's no solid tips to keep you safe other that don't be alone. Thank God, its only muggings you experienced...

Take a self-defense course. But really- just don't be alone at night.
  • I know, thanks it does really suck. Its tough because I feel as though I should be able to come home from work at 7pm and feel safe. It's not like I'm staggering home drunk on Sat at 2am, you know? I plan on meeting up with people in the city and going home w/ them so that I am not alone, but I can't do that everyday, I want to be able to live my life. My bf trains in MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I think I may need to get some training from him and his gym buddies! Thanks for the advice though.
  • Good luck- on an aside, although I realize you've just moved and you probably don't want to move again- think of maybe a safer, more populated nabe. I understand The Bush is probably what you can afford, but at the same time, its money well spent if its for your safety...
  • That really sucks that happened. Were you walking from the train? A tip is to keep up with the pack of people coming to and from the subway. There's been a bunch of muggings in that strip unfortunately with people coming from the shadows to catch someone unaware. You should always trust your gut on something like that and self-defense class can't hurt.
  • Yeah, I was walking off the train down bogart st. I got to the new middle eastern restaurant and the guy was hanging outside. I walked by him and he started to follow me thats when I turned around and went into the grocery store. Of course I should have just went with my paranoid instincts and told someone that this guy was following me. Oh hindsight... Definitely staying w/ the pack of people is always a good idea.

I would like to contact someone in regards to getting better lighting on those side streets (siegel, moore, varet, etc) because once you turn off bogart there is a lot less traffic and it is really quiet.. If anyone has any suggestions about how to make this nabe safer, I think nows the time to do it. Summer time it will just get worse....
  • Really awful that happened to you, especially after just moving to the area and at such an early time of the evening! I think though you know the basics ideas of keeping yourself alert and aware so there's no need to offer further advice there. Sometimes though you can only do so much and if someone is gonna mug ya, they're gonna mug ya. It happens there as it happens anywhere in the entire city. Making contact for better lighting can only help though! And get other people in the area to do the same. The more people gunning for the same thing, the better your chances of seeing it happen. That said I hope this doesn't make you regret moving to your new neighborhood!
